Overall Opinion of PMDG 777

I think that this plane is one of the 4 greatest addons out now. The other 3 being the NGX, Q400 and the CS DC9.

Performance has been very smooth despite some initial OOM issues which have since been resolved.

Is it worth $90? That's a subjective question. For the full detail across the board from visual model to the flight model to the last detail such as red glowing brakes that blow the tire. I find that it is absolutely worth the money and I'm glad I bought it.

I don't find it necessarily to be a NGX on steroids. I find the FMC to be very similar and having put the time I did into the NGX prepared me for setting up the flight . Flying it is a different beast

This is a great aircraft and for the 1st time in a long time I look forward to long hauls again.

A phenomenon, PMDG is.

The 777 just seems more graceful and integrated to me than the NGX, which is saying quite a bit. It's not 100% clickable, no VC is, but there are no glaring absences or discontinuities between refinement and function in one place, and none in another, which is more typical even for very good aircraft add-ons.

The use of the FMC as a fuel and flight planner as well as a configurator for the aircraft takes everything done in the NGX a significant step further. I appreciate the fact that consistency of design and control function is sustained across the two aircraft, as they should be, given their relationship and development history under Boeing.

The configurability of the PFD and MFDs is extensive. The ability to customize the aircraft to have the features and components you want and like, and to make that persist per livery, turns this into like having 20 simulations for the price, not one.

The design is reliable enough that I feel like I can really make use of all the real-world info provided, be it fuel and load and flight planning, costing, the geometry of load balancing or the extensive series of procedures, without worrying about being stymied by some arbitrary and sudden stumbling block along the way.

While it is more automated than the NGX, at the same time, that automation gives you the ability to concentrate more on monitoring tasks relevant to your current flight profile (regimen?). I find myself using the controls over EICAS and MCP and PFD/MFD display info more frequently and actively, to develop flows of info about what's going on while in flight.

This is what "simulation" is all about: facilitating your imaginative engagement faithfully, down to the finest details, so that the deeper and more granular and sustained your attention is to those details, the more rewarding the overall experience ends up being.

Any negatives? It's not a trivial sit down for 20 minutes for a session thing. There's a real all-or-nothing commitment I feel, every time I decide to load it. It is performance intensive as well, so requires some knowledgeable FSX "pre-flight prep" to get the best experience out of a session. It's not a just hop in and fly sim. It can be, but then you're missing 90% of the fun. Flying a full-scale simulation like this is not an act of wild, drunken spontaneity. You may find planning a RL trip down the Amazon simpler.

The liveries are gorgeously detailed, along with the models; zoom all the way in, not a touch is missing (look at the wheels and tires!). It's too easy to want to go outside just to revel in the look, and if you're maxing settings, that might in some cases lead to some rendering pauses and hesitations and stalls. So like with much else, you have to plan that, instead of just jumping around spontaneously at random.

Then again, it's early days. The more I learn the aircraft, the more ingrained various techniques and procedures will become.

The good news is: there's plenty to master here.

The bad news: you may find you're having little time for anything else. Sleep is important! B)

For me, it works in a single way logic... PMDG releases a product, I buy it... Not thinking or checking price, I have all their products ! Simple as that ! I even have the J41 without EVER having the chance to fly it (I can't fly that Turboprop ! Never had the chance to fully study and understand it's FMS lol).

Anyway, the PMDG 777 is as orgasmic as the NGX ! Too bad I could only fly once due to my current trip, where I'm flying for real  ...

Despite of the little bug I had so far (The ILS and Course tune since I set my panel state to C&D), it's perfect ! By the way, performance for me is slightly worse than NGX but not even close to be as bad as the superbugged 777 competitor (Which I also have but now it's been deleted) ! I wish the MD-11 had the same graphic level as NGX and T7 but it's understandable due to it's older age and not to mention 747X (But I'll be waiting for the V2  ). And also, that we had a PMDG 757 and 767 but it will be in my dreams  B) !

IMO, the three ABSOLUTE best Addons ever for FSX are PMDG T7, NGX and Airbus X Extended !!

The sound is the big stand out for me, particularly that of ambient cruise, they cracked it on this one. It's all about the holy sh*t this feels real moment.

marka,

Ya I forgot to mention the sound!  This is what I absolutely love about the A2A planes as well.  Clearly both companies have people onboard who know how important fantastic sound is to the sense of realism.... and know how to get it really RIGHT.  I use my ears as much as my eyes to get a sense of what's going on, and that makes the whole thing multi-dimensional.

So far I'm loving it, getting 35-40fps in cruise and 20ish on the ground. The systems and sounds are just incredible. Well worth the £58.

Love your signature  :P I'd probably join BAV again if I didn't have to clock 100 hours to fly the 777.

I don't see better frames either, I'm not so happy?/satisfied? than others. I do get lower frames than the NGX. It feels like a big clumsy NGX :)  Also the delay in switching views, waiting for textures to load. I wasn't getting the skeleton fuselage with the NGX, I'm getting it with the T7. I have a good system, less than a year old, I7 (Overclocked) 16 gigs, GTX 560i 1 gig card,  turn off all unnecesary sceneries.

I get about 32 frames in KLGA with the NGX heavy scenery, down to 24 when I undock the pfd mdf to use it in my full size (half) cockpit. The T7 goes down to 15 by just clicking on the PFD.

I do have to admit that I don't have all the problems other users are having. It flies fine and everything works perfectly.

The NGX is a work of art :)... I know the T7 is in the hangar (I had to buy it to try it), but I'm a short hauler, the NGX and the DASH 8 are my aircrafts of choice.

Great feed back.  Thanks for all the honest opinions Chemanuel and others.

Having operated the NGX over the last two years I am not surprised by the level of detail and the "immersive" simulation of the T7. I believe PMDG state of the art is unique in the flight simulation world..!

My first impressions after three short range flights: FPS (at least on my system) are very close to the NGX ones, maybe just a little worse, but definitely comparable. There are a few bugs here and there but I believe this is pretty normal given the complexity of this baby and hopefully they should be fixed soon...the sound is absolutely fantastic: the engine spool up sound during engine start or at take off is simply jawdropping...

Despite the level of automation hand flying the T7 is really a pleasure...

FPS seem to me a little bit more sensible to mouse cursor being hidden or not than they are on the NGX (in my case not the 12 FPS drop that someone else reported in another post but they are definitely affected by the mouse pointer issue)..this is something PMDG should really look at.

Overall this is another masterpiece and, if you like flying the heavies in FSX  the T7 is definitely a must have in your fleet...

Yesterday I bought my wife 50 Shades of Freedom (released yesterday in the Czech republic), she bought me PMDG 777. I think it was the best deal I have ever made.

The plane is just pure extasy. Easy to setup, easy to fly. Frames are superb - at EDDF with UT2 traffic in the NGX I clearly can see stutters as the computer tries to cope with all the traffic, buildings, cars, etc. (frames around 15). With T7 I am above 20 fps. I expected top quality product and I got more than that!

Both my wife and I are competely satisfied...:D

One thing I forgot to mention in my previous post: the visual model is obviously excellent, but the cockpit textures are....too eye candy...yes, not joking, don't get me wrong, I love them, they are absolutely fantastic but what I mean is they look too clean and perfect and they miss in my opinion those little things that might give a further sense of "real world" (i.e dirty panel displays, some scratches in the paint...in general a better feeling of usage of the cockpit...)....

Nothing to be worried about......it is just my personal opinion....look forward for the next flight..!!!

I am always sad to read people that never used their MD-11. That has to be added to the list. Especially from an addon a few years ago, it set the bar so high the NGX only barely beat it. The Q400 I agree, also one of the best planes. I can't wait for Majesticsoftware to come out with the pro version.

Love your signature  :P I'd probably join BAV again if I didn't have to clock 100 hours to fly the 777.

100 hours?? That's only 2 weekends of flying!

I absolutely love it! Ive done about 6-7 flights this week and the MD11 sat in the hangar, and that never ever happens.

The startup sounds are just awesome, similar to starting MD11 where your sub vibrates the room and the neighbors think earthquake.

No problem with FPS either, Been very smooth  even down to 20 fps. Initial OOM but resolves by using more balance  in my demands. Its an absolute joy to hand fly, and every landing has been manually done. Not even sure what the autoland is like. All the principles are the same as the NGX but she definitely handles differently in that there is a whole lot of power and mass to deal with.

The only issue ive been having is reverse thrust takes a while to kick, but most likely a hardware issue not configured right. Just a big handshake congrats to the PMDG team for all the work that shows attention to detail, visually, systems and performance.

Now I've been able to spend some time  with it,  I consider it to be a superb piece of software and fully lives up to expectations.

Yes, there are some similarities with the NGX - inevitable given Boeings design philosophy, but it is a whole different animal on several levels.

Reading the manuals its amazing the detail that's been put into  this thing and I doubt that many simmers (me included) will ever fully explore what's 'under the hood'

If you want a long haul tubeliner then this is the gold standard

After 2 flights I really enjoy it, I don't get the wow factor of the 737 but that wasn't expected. A few gripes, the mcp buttons are more fiddly, I don't like the transparent FMC pop up, that's no big deal, with an 8 week old daughter the manuals won't be getting read until winter and I might get a flight in every few weeks or so. I was thinking of holding off buying but i hope my cash might help get the DC 6 out sooner!
