PMDG should take the lead in upgrading Microsoft Flight Simulator

Featured Replies

Yeah. Lockheed martin went the ###### way and made the new development in pro and edu direction. So homesimmers cant enjoy the new code...

Make no mistake about LM:  they are unlikely to do us any favours.

Between Microsoft's lack of vision and Lockheed's refusal to expand to gaming, I can only repeat the already stated hope for Steve's DX10 fixer to give FSX a life extension.

I'm also looking forward to the day RSR announces which product PMDG will replicate in X-Plane. He and Austin seem to have a great working relationship, and I personally think that with a lot of community involvement, XP10 can be a great success.

XP10 can be a great success.

At least its still being actively developed for the private consumer market.

Sooner or later, something will have to happen. Cant run on FSX for the rest of eternity.

I'm just surprised that no one has been able to re-code the FSX engine. Unless it's blocked in some way? I bet it's easy said than done.. Just wishful thinking I guess.  :P

Come on.

PMDG is just a couple of guys working on aircraft. Anyone who thinks they have funds and means to make an entire simulator marketable to the masses is plain delusional.

I don't really understand how people seem to push P3D so much on Avsim. I mean, it does somewhat keep compatibility with FSX - for now - but sooner or later this would break, and unless MS releases LM to market P3D to entertainment market and they actually do so, we are looking at a sim we really should not be using at all. That is a grand piece of liability there. And sooner or later - the compatibility will have to be broken anyway.

Meanwhile, XPL10 is out there - and most people just don't care. A bit puzzling for me, though I understand around here, specifically, people are mostly about big metal, and that is one underrepresented market in XPL right now.

I can see first PMDG release being tipping point; if IXEG 737 is released by that time, these could be the addons to bring a common ultrarealistic airliner flyer to XPL.

My hope is Microsoft will make a deal with Lockheed to take the new and improved P3D code and attach an entertainment license to it. M$ for entertainment, LM for Corporate.

This could work in favor of both companies since M$ could take advantage of LM's improvements and LM could take advantage of the masses the new M$ sim would draw in.

M$ still owns the entertainment license to ESP.

Don Mattrick at M$ Game Studios is out. Ballmer is one foot out the door. This opens the door to M$ rethinking their failed strategies.

The new head of PC gaming is Steam's former boss, so he at least has some insight into the PC market and how to make it successful.

All of course wishful thinking.

Reality for me is I'm ready to flip the switch on X-Plane once the aftermarket matures to the level of FSX.

Cheers,

I maybe misunderstanding you when you say "no one" and "re-code" but,

What do you think LM did, they bought the right to the code/engine and edited it as they needed or saw fit.  Anyone with the knowledge AND money can do so, but you just can't decompile a game, edit somethings and push it back out even if it were free I'm sure.

If that were the case I'm sure CaptainSIm would love to just decompile PMDG work, edit a few things then call it their own.

All FSX needs is an outside dll or module that can intercept and persuade the fsx atc, weather, and environment to do some more logical things. For atc, the ddl would do the thinking and or follow user made configurations for each airport to force atc to open certain runways at certain times, traffic volumes, aircraft weights and of course weather. I did a test and apparently fsx ai can follow flight plans,( yes that is right, I could explain more if anyone asks) This could open the possibility for ai to follow SID/STARS. Proper things is weather can be added such as degraded flight performance due to icing. The environment can be runways and taxi surfaces can be harder to move on due to wetness, snow storms ( heavy snow build up). Snow textures for taxi way and aprons. Tornado visuals and effect when detected the same for random or reported volcanic ash and eruptions.

Any takes?

I read somewhere than Alan Mulally is leaving Ford in 2014, possible candidate for MS CEO.

Same here.  I've played with the demo a bit, and may even end up finally buying a copy.  However now that I have FSX tuned decently + REX + some FTX stuff + a couple nice addon planes (payware/freeware) it makes it really tough to switch over.  I think the two biggest things keeping people away and on FSX (from comments I've read at x-plane.org) are eye candy in the form of good scenery, and high end payware like PMDG stuff.  XP10 has some nice autogen type stuff for sure, but everything is autogen.  Any large city is indistinguishable from any other large city as to which one it is because it's all generically place and styled buildings.  The other is the airports all have no buildings except I believe KSEA as a demo of what XP10 can do for airports. Heck, XP10 is now 64bit.  FSX style VAS problems?  Not with 64bit there won't be.

XP while it has made improvements at each release has not won me over as far as flightsims go. I find it more user unfriendly and cruder graphics. It will probably be the wave of the future but I'm not ready to jump the FSX train for XP anytime soon.

Proud simmer since 1982 using the following simulators: Sublogic Flight Simulator 1 and 2. Microsoft Flight Simulator 4.0, 5.1, FS95, FS98, FS2000, FS2002, FS2004, FSX (and unfortunately Flight!). Terminal Reality Fly 1 and 2. Sierra Pro Pilot, Looking Glass/Eidos/Electronic Arts Flight Unlimited I, II and III, Laminar Research X-Plane 7, 8, 9, 10 and 11, FS Aerofly 2, Lockheed Martin Perpar3D 2.X, 3.X, 4.X and 5.X and Microsoft Flight Simulator (2020). Not to mention numerous combat simulators and games related to flight that I have played with over the years.

System: Intel I7-7700K-Water Cooled, 32GB Ram, GTX 1080Ti, 500gb SSD, 1TB HD and dedicated 1TB and 2TB SSD's for Flight Simulators

i bet people who made the switch to xplane dont miss the stuttering in fsx!

I7-10700F RTX 3070 32 Gig Ram

i bet people who made the switch to xplane dont miss the stuttering in fsx!

smooth fast 64bit flying, no stutters at all.  I also do enjoy my fsx/p3d but it's not super smooth like xp10.
