I never thought the DX discussion could reach such heights and ignite such temper. I'm quite entertained   Go on, last man standing wins the argument!

Well I managed to get through the last 24 hours without stomping on my toys

I refuse to get into petty arguments, everybody should just enjoy what they have.

There is a vast gulf of difference between "works perfectly" and "broken"

I haven't heard of a single addon that "doesn't work" with this fix. what I've been hearing are reports of some errors here and there, mostly minor glitches, I'm happy with my purchase.

but if you want perfect, this isn't for you. don't spend your money. enjoy all the problems you've already resigned yourself to dealing with in dx9 fsx. (you don't have a perfect sim now, you've just become accustomed to the limitations)

+1

Lets go back to basics. If some add-on scenery has some issues in DX10 its the fault of the developer. If add-on aircraft have some issues in DX10 its the fault of the developer.

If DX10 had been completed, then all the above developers would have had no choice, they would have had to make their scenery and aircraft compatible with both modes of operation. In other words, they would have had to learn more and be more carefully and work a little harder.

We are at the watershed now, in order to move forward, developers have to make their stuff bigger and better, the glass is pretty much full to the brim. I'm talking about VAS. To fly the latest jet to the latest biggest and best airport together with the best scenery and mesh etc. DX9 is struggling. Sure, there are ways round it. Sure you can reduce this and that. Oh, but that's going backwards. Sliders to the left everyone! To move forwards you have to go backwards and reduce settings. I fail to understand how that is progress.

I don't own the current biggest and best long range jet. I'm reading that theirs a special section in the manual that tells you how to go backwards. I'm also reading that the VAS is ONLY 200-400MB more than the last one. Yet, its odd how many are having issues with OOM's *thinks*

DX10 is NOT the magic bullet, because of the limitations of FSX itself, but its moving forwards. That's what matters.

I muddled a lot with DX10 and came to the conclusion that DX9+SweetFX suits me better with no compatibility issues like DX10 has. DX9+SweetFX visuals are stunning if you have a proper setup file. I did not see any better in DX10. I'm just curious what else I may be missing.

Thanks,

Dirk.

Apologies if this has already been covered, but with the fixer can Bloom be activated in FSX DX10 without cutting FPS in two?

From reports from others, yes very good I believe. in this version, cloud shaders have been changed, so very little hit on FPS when flying in bad weather. I think I have that right, will need to read the manual again to confirm.

This is very interesting.

Dirk.

I don't really mind the Dusk/Dawn thing, just tried it at KLAX; looks ok. However, I want ALL my textures to look "normal" while using DX10 and Im not convinced that it will for many airport's and Im not willing to throw $35 at it just to find out, if it was like $18 maybe I would.

You can try the free fixes already available here on AVSim. I have used DX10 for well over a year with the Shader patches Steve released for free.

The new fixer (which is not free) will help with most planes and most add-on scenery, but not all. So you might want to check compatibility first on Steve Parsons (developer)  FSX blog.

Good Question.

No, there isn't enough information. And even if there was, going through 10+ pages of a thread to find the bits and pieces I need to know before dropping $35 is NOT what should be expected of the customer.

All of this should be on the product page, end of story.

I did, however, read through this whole thread so far, and still don't know if my FSDT scenery is supported.

I have no idea if it's confirmed from the developer that VC shadows do/do not work in PMDG products.

As far as Flightbeam and FlyTampa, I missed your fixes, but I'm pretty sure I didn't see anything in this thread about CYUL from Fly Tampa.

I use this scenery a lot, and need to know if this product supports it.

When looking at the product page, no where does it say if it's supported or not.

If he's going to charge $35 for a DX10 conversion program, then he needs to list EVERYTHING the program WILL or WON'T convert to DX10 so it's usable, and on the product page.

Potential buyers need to make informed decisions before spending money (at least the smart ones do), and they need complete information to do that.

Hi AJ,

All FSDT airports work (you can test this even with the free shader patches, without costs). I have their KLAS and KLAX so I can vouch for those, but I'm positive so do the others.

There are compatibility reports on Steve's website and on the AVSim DX10 subsection.

The VC shadows are indeed fixed by Steve but PMDG did not model them, so there is nothing to see there. If the developer doesn't add it to the model, Steve's fixes can't program them in.

So you need an airplane with the VC shadows build in or use the default planes which have them.

Mark

Yes. You can even regulate the amount of bloom with the fixer (which is nice because the FSX default has a lot of it).

You can try the free fixes already available here on AVSim. I have used DX10 for well over a year with the Shader patches Steve released for free.

Guys, forgive my ignorance, is this Fixer an all-in-one DX10 switcher, or do I need to go through that loooong DX10 thread again? Is there some latest updated readme on how to switch to/from DX10 really fast? I don't mind the price of the fixer, but all those DX10 tweaks were exhausting.

If I get the fixer I'd also need to first check on the current AA/nInspector settings used in DX10 and a safe way to return to DX9 if needed.

Thanks,

Dirk.

I want too, but...

I don't want to buy a $30 peice of software that makes "some" thing look better but at the same time makes my $100 invest in FlyTampa sceneries worthless.

It's not a case that the fixer makes FlyTampa sceneries "worthless". Without the fixer, you simply cannot use FlyTampa sceneries during the night AT ALL in DX10... period. That is an FSX limitation.

Without the fixer, FlyTampa airports in DX10 have no runways, taxiways or parking ramps at night... just a huge, featureless gray texture. That is definitely the case at Dubai Rebooted.

Though not perfect, the fixer does at least make FlyTampa airports useable at night, insofar as you can actually see the runways, taxiways and aprons. Lighting is an issue, but to correct that would require the developer to change his base textures (especially for lights).

In other words, the fixer does all that technically CAN be done to make FT airports at least partially useable at night. Any further improvement here will require the FlyTampa developers to make fundamental texture changes in their sceneries.

Whether FT wants to invest the work in doing that is up to them. Obviously the airports work fine in DX9.

For those griping about the price, based on a few preliminary tests,  the new filtering in combination with the clouds change is brilliant! I was able to turn off my NI SGSS AA filtering and still maintain excellent image quality. Now I can fly through rain and clouds without a hickup (never got my GPU over 48%).

Thanks for the report. It is a real good argument in favor of trying the Fixer.

Dirk.

I agree, well said Kevin.

It is shameful that some people are happy to blame Steve for "not allowing everyone to try out DX10 with this" ...... what a load of baloney.....  And telling him it should be sold for $15 ............ sure, devalue the man's skills and time too ...... I guess you lot think he should only be entitled to make 'minimum wage' money for his talents huh?

Honestly, some people are like spoilt kids ........ If you cannot afford it, that's a shame, but it doesn't mean he should be giving it away.  I cannot afford a new BMW 3 series, but that doesn't mean they cost too much.

Alain's spot on - if he had charged $64 people would have said "oh man, $32 would have been spot on"......

Just give up with the serious sour grapes

I personally don't mind the price, but I wonder what are the sane levels and guidelines of pricing here. Some say it's expensive and you assert it is not, why do you think you are correct?

Thanks,

Dirk.

So far, CYUL and Dubai need the papi lights  to be removed. Tampa works fine. no issues All FSDT airports and flightbeam airports work fine.

I am just looking at Buffallo, that has no issues either . LOWW and Midway next

The dawn dusk work a round is no great deal. Never noticed it that much being turned off, so I can live with that

And if your worried about having dawn smoothing off, try it in DX9, and see if you live without it.

Edit. Ok, Midway is fine, onto TNCM and LOWW

TNCM and LOWW pass ok. Lgav, no apron lights.

So, to sum up, the only FT airports that need adjustment are CYUL and Dubai., and LGAV

AL USA FT, FSDT, FB airports work as advertised.

FSDT KLAX... Runways only half lit during the daytime. (foggy weather for example)

I have found that even with the fixer, dx10 still isn't usable for me. I am forced to use sparse grid super-sampling in order to see the displays on the T7 clearly.

But this means that the clouds start to make the sim stutter from the aa setting no matter if I have the "cloud sharer" enabled or not.

I know there's a lot of money in aviation because I put it there.

Like the price or not, this patch is a monopoly. If you want near perfect DX10, you have no other choice but to buy this patch.
