Active Sky Next with the 777!

Featured Replies

This morning we have had thick fog at real world Heathrow. Many flights delayed.

I have left my B777 on 27R just to watch ASN. All I can say is A-M-A-Z-I-N-G to watch the very realistic fog gradually getting less dense over 2 hours

I really cannot see any reason why anybody would want to miss the great ASN experience.

you watched fog for 2 hours ?  :Hypnotized:

How many of you run Active Sky/Radar Contact over a network? Is it worth doing if memory isn't an issue? I've been considering it for sometime. Also, if you're using AS2012 textures, do you install 2012 on the FSX computer and install ASN on the client? Thanks.

It's not worth running it on a network for performance reasons only, ASN itself doesn't use many resources, nearly all quad core CPU's will run it fine with FS at the same time. The only reason for a networked solution I can think of is if you only have one monitor on your FS PC and you want to see the map on your laptop for example, but even then you could just install the radar gauge into your aircraft instead, it shows the exact same info.

Cheers, Andy.

Wait, I can think of one… even lower fps.

Well this is the price for a truly excellent weather program and progress , you cant have all that stuff going on to give such a great experience and expect no hit on frame rates, just wait until your  next PC upgrade it will really shine

What do you guys mean? I have both FSGRW and OPUS set at reasonable cloud levels with reduced cumulus.bmp texture and fly fine. I experienced no difference with ASN. Is everyone who is having problems using the max cloud draw and sight distance? either way, I find ASN more customizable than the other weather engines regarding performance.

BTW, I love how it is so easy to fly a cessna into a thunder storm and get vertigo unless you are hard focused on your gauges :P

the 777 is too harsh on frames for me, i went back to the default cessna.   :P

but seriously, it should be pretty easy to get it performing well, i mean, my system is a couple years old and i get 30-40 in the 777 and it rarely dips into the 20s even in the heaviest weather. i find that the biggest factor in minimizing fps hit was using 1024 textures for clouds, and this is the case with any weather engine i've tried including the built in weather that only draws 3 layers.. ASN might be drawing more clouds in certain situations but that's kind of the point if you like that thick IMC...

I am having issues with NEXT.

Firstly the trial key lasted less than a week before it asked me to purchase.

Not a big deal, but it should have lasted 7 days as advertised, but ah well, I was going to buy it anyway.

When I cycle through the views by going to external views and then back inside the cockpit, all the clouds dissapear, and I have to manually re-inject the weather through the debug window to get the clouds back.  :O

I am using windows 8 with ASN with Rex textures if that helps. Oddly, I didn't notice this problem while I was using the trial key.

Also when I ran it another time later yesterday for another flight it inexplicably told me the product wasn't activated even though it actually had told me it activated the first time I ran it after purchase. It then said I only have 10 activations left. What?

Finally, I would have posted this on their forum but the forum registration activation procedure didn't work.

On the bright side, the weather simulation is actually pretty awesome.

EDIT. Whoops! Just found the forum registration email in my yahoo spam folder. Arggh!

Troy - Could you repost this in the AS support forum HERE on Avsim?

Perhaps we can track down your activation and registration problems without taking up PMDG space?

Thanx,

Vic

Hi Vic, I have re-posted it in the "bugs" section on AS forum.

I always ran previous versions of Active Sky on a networked laptop, as I always found the user interface screen to be quite resource-hungry. It (frankly) seemed to be inefficiently coded - graphics-rich but a bit ponderous.

This has changed completely in ASN. The UI is much improved, and seems to have a very minimal footprint resource-wise. I run it right on the FSX computer with no negative effect on FPS or VAS.

I think I'm going to run it networked anyway. I wanted to set up my second PC to run Active Sky, Radar Contact, EFB, and do my flight planning with PFPX and TOPCAT on it so I don't have to print anything out anymore.

Before I commit to the full version, I wanna wait for the 77W release since I don't know I how much that expansion will be. The trial version looks pretty cool for the 2 flights I've done so far. A flight to and from a rainy ATL gave me a chance to see a nice transition into and out of the clouds. It did hit my frame rates pretty hard, but I don't think the Imaginesim KATL scenery helped much.

I think pilots are pushing for too much, keep the cloud layers and draw distance down, still looks and feels great and keeps the CPU happy, play with settings.

I don't think it's people pushing for too much - third party weather generating programs aren't new.  I think it is people that have been using previous Active Sky products with similar settings all throughout the past versions and now ASN is throwing those settings in the trash.  Therefore, people are going to generally be weary of new programs that offset their simulator performance that have been operating well in the past.

I've been using AS2012 for the last 1.5 years with the same settings.  I used those exact same settings in ASN and lost a substantial amount of FPS.  I'm not saying a negative connotation should be given to ASN for that reason but I do think people are justified when they question why vast performance losses are occurring, so we can get down to what is causing these differences so we can adjust settings specific to each users hardware capabilities and satisfaction - it's much more insightful and informational than just saying "just lower every setting".

Ok so is it really worth the update price?
