March 5, 201511 yr Will give it a try. Weird though, Ive hit it with one RAM stress test after another.passes without a burp. It's the boot time that's the problem
March 5, 201511 yr bios 1201 problem with Asmedia sata, wait for update if not use them. proably problem with memory training have you code b7,bd,bf. have you enabled Attempt Fast Boot http://
March 5, 201511 yr How would you compare the 5960X to the 4790K in P3D? Worth the big premium and expensive memory?
March 5, 201511 yr How would you compare the 5960X to the 4790K in P3D? Worth the big premium and expensive memory? I too would like to get some feedback on this. My 4790K machine is only 6 months old, is OC'd to 4.7GHz, and runs a 55 inch 4K monitor just fine with a 980 4GB video card using Rob's long haul settings. The only problem I have is with VAS usage and I don't think that's going to be improved with the 5960K and the Titan Black X. So where is the benefit? If it's there, I'll update in a heartbeat. If not, I'd rather fly for the week it will probably take to build and setup a new machine with P3D. Thanks for any input on this. Robert Robert Chartoff
March 5, 201511 yr I've tried boosting the boot voltage to no avail. Did you enable the LN2 jumper? ... by default it's disabled. As I understand it LN2 and SlowMode are designed to help cold boots ... sorta like operating a car when the oil isn't up to temp ... a CPU has the same type of thermal efficiency/range ... which might explain why your system works well once it's warmed up. I run my G.Skill RAM at 1.40v (spec for it is 1.35v) ... increase RAM voltage can help on cold boots, just do it in very small increments. Cheers, Rob. How would you compare the 5960X to the 4790K in P3D? Worth the big premium and expensive memory? I can only compare with a 3960X 4.6 Ghz @ 2133Mhz and the 5960X 4.5Ghz @ 3000Mhz (with GPU and SSD being the same) in P3D -- the difference is >30% increase .... I'm not seeing a huge difference in RAM prices with DDR4 vs. DDR3. Cheers, Rob.
March 5, 201511 yr Rob: did the LN2. Will try the overvolting when I get home. Thanks Rob: did the LN2. Will try the overvolting when I get home. Thanks
March 6, 201511 yr After loading Global, Vector and Open LC together with heathrow extreme ive managed to get some comparisons. Both tests run with same config file same aircraft, same weather sitting on 27R I let each test run for 5 min without touching anything and using FSUIPS to give me the avg FPS 3770 GPU AMD7900 in Eyefinity on three 24" monitors = 13.7 FPS 5770X GPU GTX980 in Surround on three 24" monitors = 29FPS Difference >52.75% Here's a very bad video taken with my iPad, sorry the quality is really rubbish as was the flying. iPads weren't designed for making blockbusters!!!

March 6, 201511 yr @Darkstar, Could you provide the Ghz settings that you used for the two i7 chips (3770 and 5770) and also the RAM Mhz and timings. Thanks PC=9700K@5Ghz+RTX2070 VR=HP Reverb| Software = Windows 10 | Flight SIms = P3D, CAP2, DCS World, IL-2, Aerofly FS2
March 6, 201511 yr LN2 jumper enabled you get some more options in bios like Max vcore. Slowmode on you boot with multi 12 , booted up in win you disable Slowmode on the fly it not disable itself if you had Slowmode on you run 1.2ghz on CPU and 1.6 cashe speed. I dont rekomend unexpireanced users to enable LN2 jumper, ex enable Max vcore in bios on Air cooling boot get +1.9volt on the CPU no comments needed. Its no difference to run LN2 jumper enabled if you not use the extra options in bios, more like a myth. Gskill 3000 with Hynix chip safe to 1.42v 24/7 with no extra cooling. The 4790k with 2400 cl9 and faster mems give more fps with same clock than a 5960x with 3000mhz cl15 mems to get equeal 3300mhz cl12. Then the load times smothness ar better with the 8core. http://
March 6, 201511 yr Difference >52.75% I did some short test flights last night with my "final" install set that matches (ASN, PrecipitFX, REX 4, Orbx NorCal, what I had in my old 3960X PC (only variance is the CPU/RAM) ... my experience is consistent with prior results >30% increase with less long frames. Orbx NorCal has always been the hardest on performance for me (even more so that KSEA) and hence why I'm testing with it. I dont rekomend unexpireanced users to enable LN2 jumper, ex enable Max vcore in bios on Air cooling boot get +1.9volt on the CPU no comments needed. So long as one keeps thermal protection enabled one should be ok with LN2 jumper set to enable, but I agree caution should be used with LN2. Cheers, Rob.
March 6, 201511 yr Rob: Finally got my problem solved thanks largely to the help of you and everyone here. Bottom line, a stable 35x125 overclock that boots cleanly and runs without a hitch. Slightly underclocking the DRAM did the trick. My batch just wasn't up to the 3000MHz it says on the box. One other funky thing I've noticed about the 5960X. You can't just throw voltage at it. It clocks REMARKABLY well on surprisingly little juice, then hits a wall. At that point, no amount of voltage that I add could stabilize it. So, 4.4GHz at 1.296 volts then, blammo! That's it. 4.5 and 1.35-6-7-8 volts weren't enough. So for my chip, that ole demon lives out around Mach 4.5. (Anyone get the movie reference?) I'd caution, this is my own experience, with a single sample, but it seems to mesh with what others are finding. Thanks, again, for your help. It's not so lonely, now, out on the cutting edge. Marshall
March 11, 201511 yr Just a status update on my build. It sets in the corner of my computer room with the issue of not being able to place my current HDD that I am using now into the new build. That problem has derailed my efforts for the time being. Just needs a few cables plugged in and it would be done. I have not given up but I certainly am frustrated. Russ
