Potential Prepar3d V3 Clue in FSUIPC Log 4.942 Release

It makes far more sense from a programming perspective to optimize the 32bit base code as much as possible before even starting the 64bit conversion process...

...give that the 64bit version could potentially mask the remaining un-optimized portions of the code base.
Indeed - wise thought.

I would bet a nickel that LM is NOT doing that.

Everyone is making it sound like ACES were a bunch of kids working in a basement when they wrote FSX. Most of their work was spent on making the simulator extensible by having flexible file formats. Despite what some have said here, the graphics engine isn't that horrible and really hasn't changed that much from DX9 to DX10 and even to DX11 in P3d.

Does anybody here think that LM is going to produce a brand new graphics engine with the 64 bit version? I really doubt it unless they decide to license someone else's product.

There's only so much code that one can "clean up". I'm saying as someone who spent most of my career writing research level engineering simulation apps. The apps that I worked on were always a team effort and contributions came from literally hundreds of individuals at different institutions and companies. With that many lines of code, the more you fool with it, the more you also break. That's not to say that LM isn't creating evolutionary changes in the flight sim. But I don't expect anything revolutionary.

Yes, i am expecting evolution, not revolution with this iteration.

Agreed. If they were going to start from scratch I doubt they would have paid the $$$ to license from MS.  I believe that they will get all they can out of the 32bit code, cleaning it up as best they can and then do 64bit. I just don't see LM reinventing the wheel.

As Jay said, ACES were no slouches in the programming area - LM has an EXCELLENT core product upon which to build. I expect they will do that in a methodical progression - as they appear to be doing.

Further to the evolutionary argument, heard a tidbid of information on another forum that V3 still uses DX11 (at least in the current Beta)...

Too bad if that's the case, was really hoping for a well worked out implementation of DX12 making full use of today's graphics cards.

Oh well, time will tell and regardless of DX version used I hope we'll all be pleasantly surprised with the new version.

I also heard that V3 features real female flight attendants.  When you initiate a flight in a tube, a dispatch is sent and a crew of flight attendants show up at your door according to the carriers nationality. Call it interactive flight safety and inflight service. Dont forget to go over the preflight briefing with them.  This is the justification for the new 500$ price for the academic version ;)

Lesse... is DX12 available in other games yet? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_games_with_DirectX_12_support

No... not really. Windows 10 is a requirement for DX12, and it was just released.... barely. Games are not going to jump on that platform quite as quickly as you might think.

So... sorry to toss reality into the discussion... but it would be seriously unrealistic to expect Prepar3D to be released with DX12 support at this time.

Vastly improved VAS management will be worth far more than DX12 if V3 is still 32bit.

Here's hoping they can still do their magic.

And there are significant number of development studios currently running the DX12 SDK...

Sadly, you are probably correct. There is enough in the way of rumors on the internet to indicate that there are two distinct limited, closed beta programs going on for P3d. One is for a DX11 32 bit version 3 and the other for a 64 bit version 4, but none of the rumors have stated whether the latter is DX12 or not.

The gaming market on the PC has not adjusted yet to Win 10 or DX12, so there's no reason to believe now that LM is going that route in the near future. The market penetration of Win 10, considering it's essentially free, is so far tiny.

All we can hope for with P3d 3.0 is that it manages VAS better and has more efficient multicore performance. Is that worth either another 60 or 200 dollars? That remains to be seen.
