If Prepar3d would release this unused VAS itself, we most likely would not have any problems with OOMs...

I dont know about you or anyone else, but I think P3D does manage it a little better. FSX was notorious for hogging the memory and not releasing. Load up your airport, aircraft, oops you made a mistake you want to fly from this airport. or change your aircraft. All that memory in the VAS will not be released and you will get an OOM rather quickly. I can do this quite a few more times in P3D without getting into OOM territory. I can fly out of a heavily detailed airport and a PMDG aircraft running 85% of my VAS and after leaving the area, my VAS climbs as the memory is released. Its not a fix for OOMs nor does it do it the most efficiently im sure, but it is better. Thats a pretty decent improvement as far as im concerned. If your not getting such a situation , perhaps sliders are too high?

Anyway ... new forum is up over at LM's P3D site, go check it out!

Cheers, Rob.

Way, WAY better! Thanks for the heads up Mr. A.

Even so, when the next version of P3D does come out, I look forward to all the crying and whining that everyone does because they can't get their flight sim to run at 60fps at EGLL or KJFK at sunset with traffic lined up to land and takeoff. This is a flight sim people, not real life. If you want the best looking graphics along with no lag times for loading, go get yourself a pilot's license. Of course, that would probably only make things worse once you land when you come home, boot up your sim, and it's not the same gfx.

Of course improved VAS means we'll start to see 2GB 3rd party airports and 2GB 3rd party aircraft and people will add more and more and of course OOMs will return and LM will be blamed ... so in that regard LM are very aware of the need for a 64bit product also and it will happen - gets LM out of the ever increasing 3rd party quest for VAS ... but like I said, the challenge of 64bit is 3rd party and the SDK.

I highly encourage this but it's not "cheap" (figure about $10,000 - $15,000 to get your basic VFR single and then you need to keep your monthly hours up so figure about $1000-$2000/mo if you want to remain active), but many pilots and instructors still use flight simulators more frequently than they actually fly because of costs.

What I've noticed and after talking to my instructors is that it's common for instructors to get their license and then get qualified to be an instructor (more training) and then use the Instructor license to help pay for the hours needed to remain active.

Personally I think this is this is the coolest thing since sliced bread and would fill my need for speed and get all my work stress out all in one shot:

I got my PPL for about $4500. That was 40hr of flight and about 40hr of instruction. I went though the whole process and got my CPL with single/multi engine and IFR ratings. Spent about 40k. Now I'm working on my aeronautics degree in the AF where I hope to fly one day.

Wow, $4500 for PPL.  Where?  I am saving funds for this year for PPL.  I figured it would be around 10K.  Would love to know about this.

Once I get PPL - I can then get "ultra badass graphics with no lag or vas and realism set to well...real" in plane :-)

Must be a natural. Because that is less than half the average in the US.

I got my license back in 1967 via a military flying club...............we could rent a piper cub for $4.50 an hour back then, instructors got $5 per hour, and the club could buy avgas for $0.22 per gallon. The club leased a Cessna 150 and a Mooney Super 21, which I flew quite a bit and I recall it being $30/hr.

I was based at White Sands Missile Range, we had great weather year around, but the wind could be pretty wild and crosswind landings seemed to be the norm. Those were the good old days.

However, like most, I gave up flying back in '71, it just got too expensive. Now, with flight simulation, I continue to fly, and I fly a lot, and I fly planes I would have never had the opportunity to fly.

You can't beat the price of "virtual" fuel, eh!

Whoa! Cease!! Desist!!!  Can all you REAL Fly-Boys get back on topic please (including YOU Mr Ainscough)?  I was happily anticipating (or was it mentally masturbating?), over the hypothetical OOM-Free environment that may, just MAY, hypothetically materialize with V3.... and suddenly we are talking about the cost of a PPL?     lol  :D

This is worse than being a child and waiting for Christmas.... :p0129:

If you logged total 40 hours and received 40 hours of dual how did you solo then?

I got my licenses in Addison, TX. It's a very busy airport and with DAL and DFW right now door, I got lots of good experience.

I soloed after 10hr of flight training. I had about 10hr of instruction done before this flight. Then worked my way up to cross country flights around 20hr.

When I started my training I had close to 2,000hr(18yr old) in flight sim. My instructor could not believe it and I repeated very few lessons.

Right behind you.  Mine via an AF aeroclub in 1974 at Sacramento Exec (KSAC) in lieu of an AF pilot slot that I lost after an eye exam.  The C-150 was up to $11/hr wet by then, but AF was sending me to college and paying for it and books, I was single, had a 50cc bike instead of a car and if the weather was too rotten for the bike I wasn't flying anyway.  Had to find a girl friend with a car so I could get groceries. Soloed in 8 and got the ticket in 38 hrs.  Added the commercial, instrument and multi work later when assignments put me someplace I could fly.
