PF3 ATC Program thoughts

fnav77,

Just watched your demo flight up to EGPH. Nicely done, thanks. I agree that the phraseology needs some work. Including the SID in the take-off clearance was very odd. The clearance itself was almost lost.

I like the fact that flying your STAR is the default rather than having to request it. Taxi instructions both ends also good.

  • I also don't feel that anyone is "beating up" on the developer. There are many, many threads where an add on is discussed and pros and cons are addressed by the forum members joining in the discussion

  • I never said that is was wrong to question or point out things that are not working correctly. The rest I stand by.

Guys

Yes P2A uses TTS voices, that is why it sounds 'real' and yes there is a cost to these.

AIRAC data is used by P2A, currently it uses only Aerosoft NavData Pro and will ship with the 1510 cycle.  Richard over on Navigraph is working towards providing the correct Navigraph format for P2A; so Navigraph will be coming in the near future.

I have been using Navigraph(1602)  in the Q400 and NavDat Pro in P2A, it works fine, issues are that on some approaches the WP names are different, also the approaches can b e slightly diffrent. No really issues to be honest at this stage, just select heading select, job done.

We have only seen this on a few routes during testing. I'm sure people will fine more during the BETA

Conclusion so we all understand

Pilot to ATC :

1Uses AIRAC DATA (Ships with NavData Pro 1510)

2. Uses TTS voice packs

3. Uses SID, STARS, Approaches as PER AIRAC. It uses Reverse lookup also to make sure it gives you the correct 'recommend departure and Arrival. if you don;t like it then select another (planning stage)

If you want another Arrival during flight then ask ATC.

It currently DOES NOT use tailwind and crosswind components to calculate runways, just uses the METAR winds. This will come in an update, so you will get a 'delay due to weather' at clearance if the weather is to bad for departure.

It does not use 'preferential runways, again this will come later.  Can use AI runways if you so wish

Anything else anyone want to know at this stage, Jereon   maybe

There are v2 video's online already. Sounds a lot better than PF3, yes, but still robotic, or maybe synthesized is a better word. It's a different kind of robotic.  And I think the amount of voices is limited.

LOL... did that San Jose Ground Controller really say taxiway "zebra" ???!!!  She must have been paying to much attention to Cam Newton's pants when he flew in last week!  It's funny how everyone's taste in computerized voices differ.  I personally HATE the TTS voices... it's the main reason I never could bring myself to try out VoxATC.  They're just so clear, so concise, so perfect.... and, most importantly, so expensive!  The cut and paste .wav method certainly has it's own problems; but I much prefer it over TTS (and MS proved over 10 years ago that it can sound pretty real if done right).

I understand the move toward TTS, it saves the developer untold amounts of effort not having to record, edit, index, and process all those sound files.  But if TTS is the future, I hope somebody finds a way to "dirty them up".  Even in the 21st century, the ATC airwaves are still decidedly LOFI.

Thanks Ray for your nice comments, I am glad you liked the video. I do like PF3 overall, it has potential, definitely. If phraseology and some procedures could be improved, it would be a major step forward.

BTW Pilot2ATC does seem to support SIDs and STARs, it can add the recommended ones automatically, but it's not clear to me where that data is coming from.

I noticed that this week's update to Aerosoft's NavDataPro (competitor to Navigraph) does explicitly say Pilot2ATC is supported, so I think we can assume it uses AIRAC data.

Pete

I keep reading this, yet VOXATC is not listed in Navigraph update list. What format do you update it with? The only ATC program I see that Navigraph supports is PROATC-X.

Check NavDataPro (Aerosof't product). Pilot2ATC was added by this week's update.

Not in my experience, with years of flights spent in the cockpit before 9/11. The reception was always as clear as anything.

The distortion added by Meatwater for the RC4 wave files made most of ATC unintelligble on headset -- maybe better on speaker. But a headset is more realistic. Folks raved that the Meatwater ones were more realistic, which I always argued was nonsense.

And they will always remain that way. It's intentional. Done so that you can understand what's being said! A hifi voice with exquisite bass settings at FL350 at 600mph with all that cockpit wind noise. No chance!!

Again, it's interesting how perceptions/preferences differ.  I spent 15 years with a controller headset in my ear and found the Meatwater mods to be much more realistic.  It guess it's kind of like the dress that went viral:

It may also depend on the part of the world you live or have experience with. Some ATC radio technology used may be different region to region.

My Youtube Videos!

I used the old PFE back when I had FS2004 and wasn't too impressed with it.  I did try an updated version again several years later in FSX, but again wasn't impressed.

PFE requires a lot of pre-flight work, too much in my opinion.  You basically have to tell it what to do every step of the way and then it provides the ATC to match this during the flight.  I also wasn't impressed with the ATC voices, although they may have improved since I tried it several years back.

I'd just like to see an ATC program that takes my flight plan and then provides ground control to get me to the runway without hitting anything, hands me off to the tower and then departure after takeoff, automatically assigns me a SID where available, hands me off to the appropriate sector ATC centers en route and allows me to deviate from my flight plan for weather, emergencies, etc., automatically assigns me a STAR where available and tells me what runway to land on, and finally hands me off to ground control and gets me to my gate without hitting anything(allowing me to choose available gates would be nice, too).

Oh, and it should use the current Airac and allow this to be easily updated, e.g. Navigraph.

Does anyone know if there's any ATC program available now that does this?

Thanks.

Dave

You pretty much described what Pro ATC does for me.

Vox does most of what you're asking for. The current version works with FSX, and P3D up to version 2.5 I believe. It is not yet compatible with P3Dv3.
