P3D 64 bit status

I have always been optimistic about this. Technically speaking, if the file formats aren't changed, it matters not if the software that reads them is based on 32 or 64 bit processing. But I recon that my own addons will break, as they are programmatic in nature, and I assume that the SimConnect API will either change dramatically or will be replaced with something else. Redeveloping these addons again for a new platform is not really an option (as this could mean investing almost 100% of the original effort), especially if there are to be other more "main stream" offerings, like the DTG flightsim. The same will probably happen to all other programmatic addons, like the system/gauges/FDE of the high-complexity airplanes, weather engines, ATC, FMCs, etc. and all those developers will have to make the same choice. As far as "LM working with the developers" - I think this is only happening for a select few, the "preferred partners". I never heard of a special beta program for addon developers. I wouldn't even go so far as to assume that there absolutely has to be an SDK or API available the same instant that the main platform is released.

But as I said, I was optimistic - until the 3.3 was released, and there was a flickering outrage that some scenery textures where no longer displaying correctly. This got me thinking, that if LM decides to make good on their "promise" to do away with the old SDK compatibility, then scenery addons might be loaded fine because of the similar file format, but what you see in the sim might not be enjoyable (flickering or missing textures, no lights, no more seasonal changes, no weather effects from what I have been reading).

So I think caution is in order when making assumptions about compatibility where future versions of P3D are involved (64bit or otherwise).

  • I have tried X Plane couple of times, and it has a long, long way to go to even catch up with 32 bit P3D.

  • Complet3D...I like that, but how about:   Repair3D (Microsoft might get offended) Prepar3D64 (Nintendo might take issue with this one) Be-Prepar3D (to shell out a ton of cash for this!)   Regard

  • from what I've seen right now, I agree with you. From what I saw from the xplane 11 stuff and thier engine they are working on, it will be way ahead of p3d.

Exactly - well done

Really, there's a date? OK then...

Kind regards,

I'm a long time XP user but now pretty much always flying P3D.  It's nice that XP is 64bit, but it has some limitations such as not being able to detach windows to put them on a second screen without jumping through crazy hoops.  The external graphics are better in P3D in my opinion.  I'm a real pilot/flight instructor and the flight model in XP is more realistic, especially with things like an engine out in a twin.  Also the avionics available in P3D are better with options such as the GTN 750 from Flight1 and also the proline 21 in the Carenado C90GTi is awesome.  In my experience XP crashes more than P3D.  Overall they are both good sims which are better in certain areas.  XP has a great community too and tons of free ad-ons.  Nice to have both installed.

Can't deny that!

Maybe if we upgrade the thread to 64-bit ...

Oh no!

Too late, your post was bit number 132 already! Does that mean that the only way out of this ditch is to run it to 256 bit?

If so, we need work gloves and bigger shovels to dig this hole deeper!

Kind regards,

Ha, we're only in 8-bit territory yet, as that can fit decimal values up to 255 :)

We need a combination lock here, not a normal forum lock.

Then we can get 128bit de-cryption key to comment, a 64bit key to look & a 32bit key to put on our key-rings.
