P3D 64 bit status

I would switch to any platform that offered performance, stability and lots and lots of quality addons.

I use both P3D and XP10, primarily P3D but still plenty of time in XP10 also with IXEG, PMDG DC6, SkyMaxx, Mesh, Real Weather Connector, Aerosoft airports, Carenado ... both platforms offer something I like and with the recent release of GIT for XP10 (GoFlight Interface Tool) I can now use all my GoFlight gear/modules in both P3D and XP10.

It can be difficult to keep multiple platforms going but worth it for my desires/goals.  Just as many look forward to P3D64, I look forward to XP11 as I struggle with FPS performance under XP10 in 4K res.  Both platforms have their good and bad, a "blind eye" (tolerance) is required in all cases ... but both are more than "worthy" of taking up space on my main FS PC.

Man, and to think this whole time I'd been talking to an expert.

I don't know if this was intended as sarcasm, but to be clear, I've never ever accepted the title of "expert".  I don't pretend to be one and I'm always in a constant state of learning something new.  I put in the time to try to help people with what I know (or what I'm permitted to say that doesn't violate NDA), if it works great, if it doesn't then keep experimenting ... I don't make "golden rules" and I have no "P3D bible", I only offer suggestions.

Cheers, Rob.

  • I have tried X Plane couple of times, and it has a long, long way to go to even catch up with 32 bit P3D.

  • Complet3D...I like that, but how about:   Repair3D (Microsoft might get offended) Prepar3D64 (Nintendo might take issue with this one) Be-Prepar3D (to shell out a ton of cash for this!)   Regard

  • from what I've seen right now, I agree with you. From what I saw from the xplane 11 stuff and thier engine they are working on, it will be way ahead of p3d.

That's a litle OT, but: Rob, could you write a short summary and compare X Plane and P3D for airliners?

I would greatly appreciate this as I am in constant struggle if I should buy X-Plane and the 737.

I've purposely avoided any such compares.  I may do an in-depth compare in the future (perhaps when XP11 is released) but it would be on my own personal web site ... I don't think a short summary is possible as there is just too much to cover on both sides.  These types of compares also elicit considerable emotion from camps in either side of the equation which can often lead to lots of wrong information about one or the other.

Cheers, Rob.

I definitely look forward to 64bit. I don't have issues with FB SFO/FTX NORCAL, however, if I use same max settings at FSDT LAX/FTX SOCAL, I get an OOM about 2 minutes in. I just hope that my favorite developers such as ORBX, FLYTAMPA, PMDG, FLIGHTBEAM, AND FSDREAMTEAM will be able to convert their products in a somewhat timely manner.

That's a great idea to do a god comparison on your website! I would definitely appreciate this.

I really hate the fact that people cannot discuss P3D vs. XPlane without "fa*boy attitude".

I personally like both and see the good and the bad sides. But let's close this here :-)

I think the addon developers will be pretty quick to adept their addons to 64bit. I guess most of them did research meanwhile what has to be done. The 64bit chatter is going on for some time now.

Hi Stefan,

When X-Plane went 64 bits, it wasn't very long before addon developers had updated their wares to work in the new environment. So, I don't see this as a major hurdle for devs. You can bet they will get advanced betas of the build, to test against their software.

Patiently waiting for the next evo of P3D, hopefully with 64 bit architecture.

The IXEG 737 is indeed very good and is the first real opportunity to enjoy the X-Plane platform with a PMDG-level addon. X-Plane can do some very cool stuff and the night environment inside it is breathtaking but you will yearn for REX, AS, etc which are the icing on the P3D cake. X-Plane has its own versions of those, but none of them quite cut the mustard currently. However I would say any serious simmer should be giving some love to X-Plane as it's getting better all the time.

Google 'Airline2Sim IXEG' and you'll find some videos we made with a real life 737-300 pilot. They will give you a good idea of how it looks.

All that said, I do tend to migrate back to P3D given the choice of both...

That said, I don't doubt that P3D will eventually move to 64 bit.

Way Wrong

Here is what I am running with no pauses at all.

P3D, PMDG 737, Pro ATC, AS 16, EZ dok, My Traffic 6, Air Traffic Manager, GSX,  ACARS from my VA which records quite a few parameters, constantly. All this on a 3 year old i5 with a pretty slow hard drive and 6 GB of ram. I have never had an OOM incidentally.

Bob,  I fly low and slow with a 2560x1080 monitor which tends to eat up memory at a rapid pace.  I love flying over the highly detailed scenery that I have paid so much money to get.

This is the main reason that I don't fly jets.  Can't see much at 30K feet.

Have some insider scoop you'd like to share Rich?

Been around a while my dont fret - the big questions is who will jump on board due to most of the 32 bit payware wont work in it - thats the big question Vic

Rich, I think that you're overestimating how much payware won't work. It really depends on whether LM retains formats such as BGL, MDL, etc. for their 64 bit version. A good amount of gauges are already written in XML, so those shouldn't be too big a problem. My guess is there will be at least some backward compatibility and also conversion apps in the new SDK.

I agree Jay - it may not be as easy as 123 but I doubt the transition will be that bad. Of course, there will be the unlucky one who just happens to have all the wrong software.

Me thinks most will break and it will be up to the developer of said payware to make it work so that will not be free most likely nor should it be and I would assume that will take a lot of time and thats a fact - is what it is - so I think I am pretty spot on

I'm holding off for the 128-bit version
