P3D 64 bit status

Featured Replies

Why do you keep reaching conclusions, I never said I bought it, I actually paid a 1 month subscription (twice ) when trying out 2 different versions.

You lost me there, you can get a refund from a subscription also within 60 days, there is no 30 day "tryout"?  Review the link.

You statement about the NDA clause...do you work for LM?

I do work for LM, but I do NOT get paid by LM and I'm not an LM employee.  You will see "Lockheed Martin" under my avatar/name on LM's P3D forums simply because I'm a global admin/mod for their web site and not an employee ... however the cost of living in Orlando is considerably lower than in California ... and they have the Cape very close to one of their facilities.

As far as zoo keeper, well this is a P3D 64bit speculation thread number 1023 ... I don't see any harm in speculation and everyone seems to be keeping polite enough.  Besides, I thought everything tasted like chicken?

Cheers, Rob.

  • I have tried X Plane couple of times, and it has a long, long way to go to even catch up with 32 bit P3D.

  • Complet3D...I like that, but how about:   Repair3D (Microsoft might get offended) Prepar3D64 (Nintendo might take issue with this one) Be-Prepar3D (to shell out a ton of cash for this!)   Regard

  • from what I've seen right now, I agree with you. From what I saw from the xplane 11 stuff and thier engine they are working on, it will be way ahead of p3d.

There is a tiny bit of performance gain going to 64 bit as it doesn't have to go through WOW64 subsystems to emulate 32 bit.

Our processors have been native 64 bit for a while. So unless you have a really old PC then I guess it doesn't matter for you since you have a 32 bit processor anyways.

Is there something in the water? Are these the dog days of summer and everyone is irritated or what? Sheech! :P

Water?  You mean I've been drinking water this whole time?  Wow, I thought it was vodka.

Well I guess I owe you a huge apology.  I had no idea you were so high in the ranks. Man, and to think this whole time I'd been talking to an expert.

Come to think of it, I've visited your site and followed your settings for P3D.  Unfortunately, those settings didn't work for me.

They must have been drinking the water from Flint.

I know that OOMs used to be an issue with version 2, but is it still with version 3.5?  I've never had an OOM using pretty high settings in P3D--even with PMDG NGX and add-on scenery (FTX). I'm sure some people do have OOMs even with 3.5, but they do seem to be a minority now judging by the decrease in OOM posts on the forums.  That said, I don't doubt that P3D will eventually move to 64 bit.

I agree he does wonderful videos which show just what can be done....

Of course (and I understand this)  they do not not show what cannot...

I do think it is important for people with relationships with companies (or "Friends with Benefits") to acknowledge and even advise this but there is nothing wrong with having the relationship.

rob has provided us all a lot of help.

One think that Rob may help us with is telling us how much the change to 64 bit will increase disk size and disk size of 64 bit add ons which have to be loaded and whether this will have an impact on performance.

Going off at a slight tangent, but still about 64bit...

Just a question.. Flight simming is all about immersion vs realism & what we want out of the sim.

We have built 2x simulators, an Avro Shackleton & an Aero Macchi MB326 (known as an 'Impala' here in South Africa & was used for training in our Air Force).

We using FS2004! with freeware scenery from Aeroworx. Our immersion factor is such that actual (real) pilots brace themselves in the seats anticipating touchdown. (we are using actual cockpit hardware interfaces to the PC, but using LCD panels).

So, what IS actually more important, & how will a 64bit simulator improve our sim experience?

To be honest, if you're using the sim in a sandbox mode, i.e, only flying in and around the Cape Town area, you will have a long wait before anything comes along which will enhance the experience you currently have.

64 bit scenery will still have to be developed (and as you know, South African scenery development is not the most forthcoming these days) - so that may be a very long wait indeed. Using default 64 scenery won't be worth changing anything. The benefits come from the additional detail that designers can pack into their development without the memory constraints they have now. Generally speaking, this probably translates to better looking scenery (if done right). The benchmark has been set quite high by some of the best designers already, so I do foresee a great future with 64 development over the coming years.

Hi Rob,

I was looking at P3D V3 just today and there is a paid, non recurring 30 day developer pro subscription. Having said that, I'd welcome a 64 bit P3D version. Although I am a devout X-Plane 10 advocate, I would switch to any platform that offered performance, stability and lots and lots of quality addons. Sounds like P3D64 would be most welcomed.

why is LM so secret over there intentions for P3d and 64 bit,as far as i can see LM have no competition to worry about so why not share there plans, why is it a secret? if no 64 bit just say so or if 64 bit is on the cards announce it,what harm can it do

Peter

Wouldn't your 10 to 15 second pauses ( wow that is a long time) be reduced greatly by installing an SSD?

You are right, those 10 to 15-second pauses can seem like a long time but they sure beat the hell out of a total shutdown OOM crash.

I can make those long flights without a crash because of the memory management  routines LM has added to P3D v3.

My OS is running not only P3D v3.3 but my weather and EZ Doc programs as well.

The drive has nothing to do with memory problems which are caused by running out of VM which is limited by the 32-bit OS.

All of my FS Software runs from an SSD. With the exception of my backup hard drives all of my software on this computer runs from SSDs

SSDs have no effect on how fast the game runs, only on loading times, so buying them to speed up game play  doesn't work.

Here is what I am running with no pauses at all.

P3D, PMDG 737, Pro ATC, AS 16, EZ dok, My Traffic 6, Air Traffic Manager, GSX,  ACARS from my VA which records quite a few parameters, constantly. All this on a 3 year old i5 with a pretty slow hard drive and 6 GB of ram. I have never had an OOM incidentally.
