Well, on the Orbx forum JV said that this new addon will not affect Orbx payware airports but, quote: "It may affect some Orbx freeware airports where the developers have used generic terminals", end of quote. So I suppose this also could be true, or even more so, for the updated region airports. Which could mean that some textures will be improved but some not. Since I like to have everything on the same quality level this means I will skip this addon because I only fly in regions and I want everything in HD or nothing at all. I'd hate to see some parts of an airport in HD and others in default. I just asked about the use of default textures in regions: I will keep you posted. ;)

Thanks. Like you I also only fly in Orbx regions and I feel the same about using this new addon in combination with Orbx. Looks like I'll save myself some cash ;)

Cheers, Bert

In my experience, those ORBX freeware airports are quite good, but its generic terminals have nothing to compare wiith ORBX's payware top quality textures, so I tend to think the REX textures will improve ORBX freeware airports even a bit more!.

Hopefully REX will release detailed installation instructions for this upcoming product, taking into account that most people use their runways and taxiways textures from previous products, and others use HD Airports from Zinertek (to enhance generic buildings, hangars, vehicles, etc.). They should also explain how to keep previously installed textures (like runways, taxiways) people don't want to change when installing this new product.

First, on behalf of the REX Team, thank you for your kind words here.

I am going to try to address some questions addressed in this post:

1.) In regards to ORBX free airports:  99% of the time they use their own file structure, so we don't believe there will be a problem.

2.) In regards to VAS or OOMs:  The easy answer to this is we provide HD and Standard set textures.  You can always start out with HD and if you feel you need more juice switch to Standard.

3.) In regards to using with REX 4 TD or REX 3 Essentials:  The taxiway, tarmacs, and runways of REX Worldwide Airports have been put together to build a more cohesive feel.  It gives more of detailed 3rd party airport (as best as we can).  Though you can use our previous products with this, you would have to install them after installing REX Worldwide Airports.  OR similar like in REX 4 you can install what textures you want individually.

4.) In regards to using with other 3rd party airport packages:  You can install what textures you like within REX Worldwide Airports individually so you can keep what you like with other products.

5.) In regards to REX Worldwide Airports working GSX:  I personally run GSX and there is no issue with our product.  As a matter of fact it makes it look even more real, because it removes (for now) 9 of the unsightly models.

We will continue to monitor this post for more questions or suggestions.

Seeing that it's 'HD', are we talking about 4096 size textures only?

Hello Simon,

REX did indeed provide different texture resolutions, so you'll be able to select the ones you wish (just like with REX Essentials and REX 4 (Texture Direct). I believe the highest resolution for Worldwide Airports HD is 4096 - though Reed might wish to confirm this.

As you may know, REX set the standard for Flight Sim textures, and if the lower resolution textures have the same quality as the lower resolution textures in REX 4 (and I believe they do), then it's going to INCREDIBLE!!!

I've been using REX products for, I dunno, 12+ years I think.  I've never been anything but completely astounded by the texture work they do!

I can't describe how exciting this product is for me!

Thanks Dave for your kind words and input here.  Yes 4096 is the highest resolution, but we do offer a lower Standard version if needed.  But I think you will be surprised, because we are only talking textures and not more polys because of models that can cause the simulator FPS to drop.

There is also a developer who is overhauling all the houses and buildings with better quality. Between the two products we will have a completely new sim environment. I think this product is not to far from release. I read about it over at the orbx forums but can't remember the product name. Pretty neet stuff for us low and slow guys.

The Orbx product is called FTX Buildings HD. Looking forward to that too.

I'm in for sure. Limiting all my flying to routes between payware airports which I always do, does become a little long in the tooth after a while. Unless you have very deep pockets to buy huge numbers of payware airports, this just makes so much sense. Look forward to it. I just hope Africa gets given equal attention to the rest of the world with this package.

As for VAS, wonder if flying over multiple airports enroute to your destination would be more of an issue than before? That though would not be a weakness in this package, rather an issue with P3D/FSX. Surely There must be a way for LM to make P3D aware of VAS remaining and flush the VAS of everything outside the current LOD circle when it reaches a critical point. But now I'm going off topic...

I'm sold, REX texture products are second to none, and I'm very excited for the default airports coming to life now!

Thanks a lot for this set of answers, Reed. Especially #2 is what I was looking for. A great looking texture add-on is fine, but topping it with the setup flexibility we know from your other REX products makes it great and it makes the difference to the other airport texture products.

I am looking forward to the release.

Cheers

What's the difference between standard and 4096?  Can someone post a shot?

One would assume standard is FSX default texture size, 1024 x 1024. In that case it is 4x less detailed than the HD4 textures. I seriously doubt the textures were redrawn specifically to fit in a 1024 x 1024 texture map and most likely you can expect that like most graphic artists they used automated methods to reduce the size of the textures. On close examination this will be visible as dithering.

This is not necessarily a bad thing. HD textures are going to use allot more VRAM and VAS and you are talking about scenery which is viewed from a distance. Do you really need terminal buildings and hangars rendered in HD? I am sure for some the answer is going to be yes, but until you are close to the object it will hardly be noticeable. MIP mapping may also make the texture less detailed at distance if REX choose to use MIP MAPs.

Will this package still be worthwhile without HD textures enabled? I would think so. We are talking art work here and lets be honest, ACES default art work leave much to be desired. This product will refresh thousands of airfields that use default objects. Of course if you don't visit these smaller outlaying airfields then that might not be important.

I am looking forward to this product and I suspect I will use the standard option because, FSX:Steam while better at capturing OOMs I find I end up on the ragged edge in heavy Orbx scenery.
