February 16, 20179 yr Whatever happened to DirectX 12 support which initially was touted to have add'l value for offloading CPU work too the GPU? This seems critical now in the age of very marginal processing gains in CPU iterations. I had been hoping that was coming in V4 P3D. February 16, 20179 yr Wouldn't that completely depend on what DirectX 12 brings to the table? February 16, 20179 yr To some extent yes.. I'm sure if DX12 proved to provide 60+fps even with complex add ons, it would get some people to switch to Windows 10 (who haven't already) but many others would be quite sore indeed about having to make the switch... trust me And I say that as someone who moved to Windows 10 exclusively about 8 months ago.
February 16, 20179 yr Considering PMDG constant claims they know nothing of planned or ongoing 64bit development, I somehow fail to see how ORBX would have an access to the new SDK and PMDG not even aware of such in existence. ORBX will probably release something really anticlimactic like new version of ther 64bit FTX Central for "easier" download Also, I don't OOM beucase I don't leave my planes to fly themselves for several hours, and that's pretty much the only thing 64bit *could* help with, without alternating all the legacy FSX code. This, and making us rebuy addons. Not really optimistic about this one.
February 16, 20179 yr Also, I don't OOM beucase I don't leave my planes to fly themselves for several hours, and that's pretty much the only thing 64bit *could* help with 64 bit is not just going to help rid of OOM's. It will help a lot of things. You know you're in a 32bit sim because every time you change view, you watch all your 3d objects get redrawn right before your eyes. When your program is running, it's loading and unloading textures from memory all the time and that's where the memory bottleneck causes issues. Just because it's not causing a fatal crash doesn't mean it's not an issue. All that extra activity is going to rob you from performance in a big way. Jim Shield Cybersecurity Specialist
February 16, 20179 yr And I say that as someone who moved to Windows 10 exclusively about 8 months ago. I'm glad you mentioned that because I am shopping for a new laptop for general computing and most ship w/ Windows 10. Is it flight simming that's not been good in Win 10, or general computing or both? This laptop is just for general computing, no gaming, no simming. It works as well with swimming as W7. From a computing standpoint, it's more optimized and more capable than W7. While there was a period where W7 was preferable to W8 and early W10, that period has passed IMO. The kinks are worked out. Remember how some wanted to stick with XP forever even when it no longer made rational sense? We'll have to go through that again before most switch.
February 16, 20179 yr Great, thanks. I have operated under the belief that Macbook/MBP are built to last better than consumer-grade Windows laptops. I am using a 5y/o MBP and it's been flawless, used every day for 2-4 hours, but finally the wifi antenna became compromised so its receptivity has gone into the toilet and it's $300 to fix it. Fortunately I found a $9 USB wifi adaptor that has improved its range now to where it's useable again. But the entire unit has lots of hours and an SSD that's quite full so I thought I'd upgrade. I wonder what would be a solid PC brand laptop that is built to last. Should I maybe look at 'business' laptops? I understand they might be built to a high standard. I have enjoyed no virus/malware in 5y on the MBP. I may end up w/ another MBP as long as I can get a 2015 model as the '16-17s I would not want. Oops, gone all tangential here! Oops, gone all tangential here!Just remember that you can only compare your MBP to a Windows laptop if they're similar in price. I've had family bash their old computer after moving to mac... they forget they paid about 4 times the price for the max so the comparison is hardly fair. I haven't tried to game on a laptop so I can't make a suggestion, but don't limit yourself to a laptop with an SSD. I found when shopping for my laptop that it's still not common place. You can always replace the HDD with one or get a computer store to do it.
