Is Microsoft flight simulator another FLIGHT ?

The MS Flight release really peeled the onion back on this place....I'll leave it at that

No because it's Asobo Flight Simulator and these devs kick a$$.

What have Asobo made in the past? (Not trying to discredit them! I'm genuinely curious)

Yes SIGNMANBOB - I totally agree with your second paragraph!  I myself always treated flight sim for what it is: A simulation, not a game, starting in 1985 with MSFS ver.1

Wasn't version 1 done by Bruce Artwick? MS didn't get involved until about v3 or 4?

Do you  remember when  Flight was  in prerelease mode ,  really hope there not making  the same mistakes

You just cannot compare Flight to MSFS

They have given explicit reassurances that this will be a continuous development.

The Flight development/business model was shady and a deliberate shakedown for cash from the start.  There was no consideration whatsoever for the user

one of the games they made was FUEL the video game, a huge open world, they know how to build large worlds 🙂

A great engine which fits perfectly for the new simulator, maybe the best out there 🙂

This is what killed MS Flight (among others):

  • Arcade flight model
  • Restricted scenery
  • Only light GA aircraft, not even a twin prop let alone jets
  • Dead world, no AI, no ATC, no road traffic...
  • Having to pay for new scenery and planes
  • No 3rd party support

This is what MSFS offers:

  • A really proper flight model from what we've heard (competing with X-Plane)
  • The whole world in never seen before detail
  • All sorts of aircraft (we've already been shown twins and jets)
  • There will be AI, ATC, road and ship traffic and probably fauna (some maybe after launch)
  • We'll get the whole world in the base package (at least the offline part)
  • They're already working together with 3rd parties

So you can be sure this won't be a new MS Flight. I do hope they took a look at the things that made MS Flight a fun experience though:

  • Being able to walk around
  • Trees swaying in the wind
  • It had some nice missions and things for us to do
  • The multiplayer experience was fun
  • (I probably forgot some)

It's not competing with X-Plane, it's competing with the real world.

You are both right, there were two FS1, one by Sublogic circa1980 with a dogfight game and one from MS two or three years later, by Microsoft from the licensed Sublogic engine. If my memory serves me well...

The game dimension has never been absent from the FS franchise (cf. British Ace or Mallard's addons in FS4) but as ancillary to the simulator. With Flight, it was the other way around.

No, Microsoft Flight Simulator ist just like.....wait for it.....any other Microsoft Flight Simulator (FSX, FS9, etc.), which means it will go through the following (entirely predictable) cycle:

1. Pre-release: Feverish, overhyped anticipation, based on a few choice videos and renders.

2. Release-day one: Forums quickly fill up with posts like: Can't download! Crashes! Slideshow!
People post the specs of their Atomium-Giga PCs with 50000 gigs of RAM and 20000 VRam Video Cards and wonder why they only get 3 fps.

3. People return to playing FSX and P3D

Have you actually played Flight? The flight models were far superior compared to FSX! The Stearman landing missions were awesome and definitely not arcade.

As far as the original question of the topic starter is concerned I don't think MSFS will be another Flight. I think it will be a truly next gen simulator that will be a solid base platform for the next decade.

Well yes and I personally thought the flight models felt way better than FSX. But there was a lot of complaining around the flight model, so that's why I mentioned it. Guess they're doing a lot with MSFS to prevent people from complaining about the flight model again.

But people will... because they have a need to complain. Lol
