April 27, 20206 yr I haven't purchased v5 myself yet because I'm waiting for the HF this week, but I can't help but notice that a lot of the poor performance or only slightly better performance complaints seem to be coming from people who seem to throw all kinds of addons into v5 as a copy over from v4.5. That's not to say things like high VRAM usage aren't real, but perhaps it's prudent to wait for an official update for these addons before judging performance, especially if you're on a system which uses some older components because developers may also still be implementing performance adjustments in their yet-to-be-updated addons and generally adapt them to DX12. April 27, 20206 yr Along with VRAM crashes, other issues are random CTDs and invisible walls(?!) Even without any addons I have encountered CTDs. It will likely take more than one patch to get it to a fairly stable 'daily flyer' product.

April 27, 20206 yr Yup. Went back to 4.5 and haven't hit anything, yet. So nice to have everything work.
April 27, 20206 yr quote from LM forum just now Hello,We will be putting out a hotfix this week fixing this issue as well as other improvements. We are currently finalizing and testing everything needed for the fix. Thanks again for your reports and patience while we worked through this issue.Regards,Rob McCarthy

I have only v5 compatible add-ons installed. The VRAM crush is real, but also manageable. I did some testing and the only thing that adds to VRAM from what we used in v4.5 is Truesky (given the same settings and add ons. But because of the way VRAM is managed in DX12, the punishment for over-indulging is usually a CTD, whereas in v4.5 the punishment was usually "just" bad stutters resulting from overflowing into shared GPU memory (system RAM). Overall, the challenge right now is stability. I've been using v5 pretty much exclusively since it was released, and got confident enough over the weekend to rebuild my system with only v5 + native v5 add-ons. I can easily induce a CTD, by changing views on certain aircraft (including default) or by trying to load certain combinations of scenery, aircraft and settings. But by now I've learned what I can and can't do, and for me, even with these seemingly crippling limitations, I can run a crashless sim session for hours. The improved lighting, Truesky, Waveworks and almost complete elimination of stutters (including the old ORBX loading pause) outweigh buggy winds aloft/weather injection problems, occasional plane crashes at 500ft AGL and general instability. I do look forward to being able to safely change views, not being in constant turbulence in the flight levels and not worrying that I might crash the plane in midair. I'm sure the hotfix will address some of these issues, but I'm not naive enough to think everything will be great after just one hotfix. Hopefully it fixes the g2d.dll and vcruntime related DGXI video card crashes, the invisible terrain/mesh issue and the winds aloft injection problem to start. Better VRAM optimization and dynamic settings adjustment to live within system limits is probably farther off, as are further enhancements to Truesky, like eliminating the weird pixelation around scenery objects and terrain when clouds are present or adding cloud layers. If you have an appetite for actively managing your settings to maintain stability, I'd say go for it, I love it warts and all, but if you get easily frustrated by crashes and "just want it to work" (which is totally fair) then I'd wait a while - at least until the first hotfix is out and evaluated. 5800X3D | Radeon RX 6900XT

I agree. VRAM management has changed with v5/DX12 and requires the end user's attention a lot more than before. But based on how the GPU is being worked more in v5 I'm expecting cases where VRAM usage goes up in general as soon as most addons are updated and running at the same time with higher settings. P3D v5 has made a huge leap forward in terms of GPU utilization as far as I can tell from reports which puts it closer to how modern games typically utilize hardware. So I think those with lower end or older GPUs may need to upgrade depending on the addons and settings used. LM have also upgraded the recommended GPU from the 1080Ti for v4 to the 2080Ti for v5 and increased VRAM capacity is certainly one of the key factors here. So whether LM can further work on VRAM management or not, GPU requirements just got higher with v5 it seems and that's not surprising considering how DX12 works. For anyone interested, there is a good thread by @Sesquashtoo about DX11/12 differences that illuminates VRAM usage in DX12 further.
