July 28, 20205 yr Hello all, To me this is a bit like "if this is the tourist season, why can't we shoot them?" I tend to agree with Chock, in that if we have to ask them they are probably not inclined to do so anyway. I further believe that if we create the new sub forums they will go the way of all other forums (forae?) and become "normal" I may just be being pessimistic though. Regards Tony Tony Chilcott. July 28, 20205 yr Oh dear. I had high hopes for this thread. But it's starting to get po-faced. The World is divided into two groups. Those who say "Give me a link" and those that provide the link. WWG1WGA

July 28, 20205 yr “Begin each day by telling yourself: Today I shall be meeting with interference, ingratitude, insolence, disloyalty, ill-will, and selfishness – all of them due to the offenders’ ignorance of what is good or evil. But for my part I have long perceived the nature of good and its nobility, the nature of evil and its meanness, and also the nature of the culprit himself, who is my brother (not in the physical sense, but as a fellow creature similarly endowed with reason and a share of the divine); therefore none of those things can injure me, for nobody can implicate me in what is degrading. Neither can I be angry with my brother or fall foul of him; for he and I were born to work together, like a man’s two hands, feet or eyelids, or the upper and lower rows of his teeth. To obstruct each other is against Nature’s law – and what is irritation or aversion but a form of obstruction.” Marcus Aurelius, Meditations, 121 - 180 AD

Okay, back in with a comedy suggestion to pull it out of the jaws of death... For comedy effect, write a really nice and helpful-sounding reply to a question from someone, but either: A) try to get as many veiled insults in there B) offer completely deliberately incorrect information C) answer the question correctly and politely, but in doing so, go for some comedy acrostics (I used to do that all the time when I wrote for The Guardian, muhahahaha). July 28, 20205 yr Well, from my (admittedly brief) experience on these forums, hardcore flight simmers seem to be one of the oldest and at the same time one of the most childish gaming communities existing. So you might be pleasantly surprised about some of the newcomers, just saying. 😄

This is certainly very true. A good example of that was the video someone posted a link to yesterday which had some XPlane dude going on about the specs for the new MS flight sim. It was a pretty harmless video and there was some okay information in it, maybe a little bit partisan since the guy likes XPlane, but still reasonably okay info despite this. But if you looked at the comments in the section below it on youtube, you would have thought he had suggested drowning a sackful of puppies from some of the replies he was getting. It was pretty embarrassing to see. Edited July 28, 20205 yr by Chock Alan Bradbury Check out my youtube flight sim videos: Here

It was pretty embarrassing to see. This is maybe my biggest hope for the release of MSFS, that this silly partisan bickering between the FSX/P3D crowd and the Xplane crowd will overnight become completely obsolete. This toxic attitude, with people on both sides wishing for the competing product to fail, had one major cause, and that is the small, niche and slightly elitist overall customer community for flight sims. Both products and associated 3rd party developers ultimately competed for the same small community of flight simmers, with ever dwindling numbers in it. Now there is a chance to have so many new guys join this hobby that everyone can get their fair share again.

A lot of people on these forums could do with contemplating their virtue and eudaimonia (look it up) and being honest with what they find. A good dose of Stoic philosophy would not only improve their behaviour here and the forums ambiance but also their personal stress levels in general. I agree with @Der Zeitgeist that these forums are often extremely childish and I can’t help but believe it’s due to a lot of bitter old men. So I wholeheartedly agree with the OP to be nice to newcomers. What have we got to lose?

This is why we would want to have a protected Beginner's Corner forum, so we can selectively remove abusive users. Don't ban them from Avsim (which was apparently done with the Microsoft Flight forum), just ban them from that particular forum. Hook Larry Hookins Oh! July 28, 20205 yr I mean, you should be nice to everyone on a forum about a hobby we all enjoy, but yes, it would be nice of us to welcome new members to our community with an understanding that they won’t all have tons of knowledge and experience. Be prepared, they might even ask a question or two that those of us who have been simming since FS5 or earlier might find stupid, but it’s a great opportunity to encourage a whole new population base to enjoy this hobby.
