This also has rather disappointing texture work. Why bake the shadows into the albedo when there is an AO channel? If carenado can't be bothered to author their assets properly then what do they have going for them?

Yes, yes, yes!  I attempted a flight in the M20 from KLUK in Cincinnati to KBKF in Cleveland, mirroring the flight I completed yesterday in FSX SE in the Milviz B55 with GNS.  Oh my.  No comparison.  The MFS GNS would not load the approach correctly.  Loaded only the FAF, which would have required a 230° descending turn.  Tried to manually insert the IAF and it entered it at the head of the flight plan, before the departure airport.  I was over halfway to Cleveland.  Tried again and it did the same thing.  Now listed twice at the head of the flight plan.  Did a D→ to the IAF and it extinguished the flight plan.  Screwed with it some more and got a CTD for my trouble.

The approach data around KBUF seems to be way off.  Even if you can get the default Garmin to work, it won't line you up with the runway.  You get these strange points that are offset from the runway which don't exist in real life.  

The default Garmins are so frustrating right now, I mostly stick to old ILS approaches.  I find with the Garmin, the only chance you have of it working is to set your flight plan, and pick one approach and just stick with it.  Try to make any change and you'll probably CTD or at best freeze up the Garmin.

I have written to Fernando at Carenado several times pleading for them to invest 10-20% of their modeling time to systems development.  Without success.
Even with that low percentage time for systems modeling they could deliver great airplanes for the general simmer.
Thankfully in FSX/P3D & XPlane we can mod and tweak their planes.

The Garmin issues have been raised at https://forums.flightsimulator.com/c/community/developer-q-a-questions/172/l/latest?order=votes where a list of questions are developing for session with the developers later this month.  I suggest you follow the link and find the related posts, which have been screened by staff before posting.  Then add comments and by all means Vote so the vote totals get the questions elevated toward the top of the list.

You can sort the list there by number of votes to see how issues stack up so far.  Pay attention to the "right click" question and it is related to tuning the Garmin knobs, etc.  I attempted to write a question where the title more closely defined the tuning issue but it was rejected as a duplicate of the right click question.  

There is a G1000 question where general GPS shortcomings for G1000, GTN, and GNS can all come together based on replies to that question.  Had the same issue with writing an additional question.  Regarded as a duplicate.

Are you able to decrypt any file you choose?

Good question.  Unfortunately when PBR came to P3d and we were learning how to use it, a lot of devs kept the baked-on shadows in their paintkits and when we learned the "Green" channel of the "metal map" (as I call it) controlled shadow intensity and forgot to turn off the shadow layer on the albedo map, you got a double intensity shadow that rendered the lower surfaces of the plane almost black at high noon in the sim.  Not a good look, hehe.

Unfortunately it's always quantity over quality for Carenedo, these planes have so much potential. Overall I am fairly happy with my Mooney they could do better, and hopefully they will. In the mean time it is the best available as far as I can see. This may be my one and only Carenado purchase for fs 2020, waiting for the A2A and other planes but needed something decent to fly. And. I think the M20 is "decent".

May i throw in a quick question: How is Carenados patch philosopy? Are they updating and patching their products on a regular basis? I am really interested in the Mooney but the AP issues keep me a bit from buying it right now.

How are you getting there?  Most of Tools menu on my system is greyed out, Including Aircraft Editor.

They usually release 1 or 2 early patches at the most. The rest is up to us making MODS.
As for the "AP issues", in this case it is all MSFS fault, same issue on most airplanes, since long ago.

At least on FSX/P3D Carenado uses mostly XML gauges and stick to the SDK variables for AP and other systems.

If the past is a guide, they will issue one or two patches and then move onto the next project.

It has always been up to the user community to fix the remaining issues..

No idea how that will play out with MSFS. 🙂

Not so sure... The default C172 can track a GPS course just fine, but the Carenado C182 and Mooney both zig zag at present.

I'll take Your word for the default C172.
But the zig zag and porpoising have been there since long ago, for some airplanes.
(From the Twitch talk, perhaps since after they decided to make unique AP's for each airplane)

I hope you are right, since I have more faith in Asobo than in Carenado to fix this..
