Water Masks - Comparison

Featured Replies

Thanks for the comparison shots.

I really have one geographic area of concern for the sim and that is the Caribbean and Mexico. I can't tell you how many times I asked alpha people to post pics of Cancun, but no one did. All I saw was the trailers, and I hoped that Asobo was able to produce the stunning tropical environments around the world that I was seeing in the trailers. They showed us pretty pics and vids, took our money, and gave us a sim where the scenery isn't complete, the aircraft don't work, the patches make everything worse. I can't tell you how disappointed I am with this sim.

What they delivered is not what they advertised, and three months after the release, the sim is actually worse than it was on day one.

Ok, so you can return back to any older sim. Will be scenery better, than MSFS? I think, that many of people rapidly forget, what default scenery we get with every older sims. Yes, I know, that everything isn't perfect, but always you can find some places, which are repesented perfectly in MSFS. I think, that enjoing good places is much better, that crying on places, what aren't perfect yet. With highlights on "yet".

That's a really good positive viewpoint. 👍  I don't want to go back to any other sim either now I have tasted this one.

The problem is we had some water masks, and they have been taken away.  Hopefully, we will all get them back with even more on top soon.
The question is, without the complaints and the questions on twitch, would Asobo have done anything about it.
If it shows on their publicity videos, it should be in the sim really.

I like to trick airline passengers into thinking I have my own swimming pool in my back yard by painting a large blue rectangle on my patio.

Not going back. P3D looks cartoonish compared to MSFS, but I have yet to complete an IFR flight with MSFS. I'm not comparing sims; I'm talking about MSFS and its glaring issues that make the sim unusable for many. They have my $120. I'd like the sim they advertised for $120. Water masks aside, I bought the premium deluxe, because I assumed that the simplified additional aircraft would hold me over until 3PDs caught up, or a freeware group (Zibo, Working Title...) could modify the default aircraft. 3Ps's have extended their extended release dates, and the premium deluxe aircraft can't be modified, so basically, I paid extra for nothing, and I didn't even get the stunning scenery that was advertised in the trailers.

Personally I made this thread to raise awareness for the missing water masks and try to get Asobo to correct their false claim regarding the timeframe of the in-game implementations, less to complain about the simulator's scenery depiction.

About that, you are raising a great point. I cannot go back to the old simulators either. But now that the weather has been taken away from me, I cannot play the new one either. Once again, I am left with no simulator I can truly enjoy. If I weren't feeling extremely frustrated with this matter, I probably would have let the water masks and other issues slide.

Right there with you. I can't go back, but I can use this one either.

I hope that people continue to post these issues.

I think most agree that going back to the previous sims is very very hard. Asobo and Microsoft clearly need our help to steer them in the right direction.
I don't know if you've seen Jorg in the last Q&A, he could do with some more sleep. In the previous Q&A Sebastian looked exhausted too.
The guys are trying!

Let's keep providing detailed constructive criticism like @ChaoticBeauty @RXP and many others are doing. This is the only way.

I just checked once again all of the Oceania trailer spots with tropical water (Moorea, Bora Bora, Samoa, Tonga, Mato Island, Timor Sea), following the 685KB content update which introduced several new water masks around the planet (but also removed some of the existing ones for some reason).

Unfortunately, none of the showcased Oceania water masks made it in with this patch. As a result, the "Around the World - Oceania" trailer from August continues to be inaccurate regarding the in-game scenery depiction to this day, and it is especially disheartening that Moorea with the proper water masks was one of the showcase areas in the Xbox Series X|S trailer (screenshot is from this trailer).

Well, let's hope we will not have to wait until the Xbox/DirectX 12 update for those water masks to be implemented. It is encouraging to see that they are being worked on, as several new ones were added with the small patch two days ago, but not so much that many existing ones were removed, which is especially baffling. Let's hope Asobo will clear up the situation soon. If they were more transparent regarding this process, all this speculation would be unnecessary.

Also the other day I discovered the Flightspots website, which is highly recommended if you are looking where to fly next, and to my surprise I saw Tonga as one of the featured spots but with the proper water masks in place. This means that at some point Tonga (left) had the water masks, but they were removed in a newer update. Bora Bora (right) is also featured on this website, but with the trailer water masks blurred.

And again without a proper disclaimer. To be fair though, as it is a trailer for something released in 6 months time, it is acceptable, as they nowhere say that you get the results from the trailer currently on your PC variant of MSFS. Still not very nice to do, but at least you can not call it false advertisment this time...

What those Asobo guys are potentially not aware: if they are going to release the XBOX version again without those watermasks, the sh*storm will be by far greater compared to what we simmers do.

Yep, that has a long tradition. I can clearly remember what they (meaning MS in those days) promised FSX would look like when DirextX10 was anounced:

It's like the car manufacturers announcing the fuel consumption of their newest models. Sad, because imho it shows disrespect for your customers, but that's what it is in advertising. And that's what those trailers are. I know what they said about the missing watermasks and I'd surely like to be contradicted. There seems to be hope, seeing some masking around MYNN and Hawaii returning after the last micro patch.

It was made clear rather early in the game's life by the Aces team that this was an artist's impression of what the DirectX 10 render path could look like and not an accurate representation, but then this did not prevent Microsoft from using it in the Windows Vista marketing materials for several months after that...

Anyway, I apologise for an earlier mistake, I was not looking at the correct island when comparing Mato Island. Too many similar-looking islands in the area, plus what's interesting is that the tropical water in the trailer is slightly blurred compared to the Bing Maps imagery, making the exact spot harder to find. The quality of the satellite imagery in this area, the smaller islands of New Caledonia, is also extremely inconsistent, which means it might be hard to create proper water masks there. Asobo are really digging a hole for themselves releasing these trailers before the water masks are ready.

Left is the Bing Maps app, middle is the trailer, right is in-game. The co-ordinates for this spot are: -22.5502208805326, 166.79216729374903

I hope that Asobo is also aware that the ethical sloppiness of the Phil Spencer‘s marketing people reflects badly on them. From early on, the FS20 team was clear that they were not involved in the commercial dimensions of the sim (that was about pricing ans subscription then). I suppose that it includes marketing.

Just flew around a few islands in Hawaii and the water needs some love. When they do add the watermasks and fix the terrain that they broke, this sim will be epic!
