Perhaps we should calm down a little

Lots of pack behavior here….I wonder whether Asobe-MS read all the individual entries, or rather at the global satisfaction levels about this upgrade, which I am pretty sure will be quite high, since most of us have low to medium end systems and would appreciate any FPS boost we can get.

I for one have an 11 year old PC with  i7 2600k 3,4 Ghz processor with a GTX960 and can now fly smoothly over central New York at global high settings. It truly is the impossible coming true and it is looking great as well. I do not even care about the pop-ins as they are hardly noticeable (for me). I lock frames at 30 fps; I swear this helps to make the experience overall smoother. Never understood why anyone needs 60fps in a flightsim anyway.

Yes, there are significant visual downgrades, but I believe SU5 is a new baseline from which Asobo will slowly start to make incremental (visual) improvements again and then there will be DX12 which might further improve performance and thus leave more headroom for graphical updates. I do agree that various sliders or other clickable options to scale the desired level of detail might be a great idea and I am pretty sure we will get that at some point.

With the level of engagement we have seen from the Team during the past year, I have no doubt that they listen and will do the best they can to satisfy also the PC users. Neumann made this clear from the start and I somehow believe him.

That all being said, it would have been appropriate if they had warned us beforehand that some visual downgrades were the main tool to achieve the performance boost and provide some perspective on how this will be handled in the future. Hopefully it will be addressed in the next Q and A.

That's what I truly thought as well back in my FSX and P3D days until I finally experienced what true 60fps in MSFS was.

I was thinking similarly. I have a good system, and have always had at least slightly-higher-than-average FPS (to the point that I have even been challenged on it and had to produce pictures/videos) but in the A320, with its glass cockpits, a lot of that tended to bleed away, and most especially when coming in for a landing at large airports.

Now, its like drifting gracefully in on a feather, and you have to see it to appreciate the tremendous difference.

Very happy for my own results, even as I flinch from all the screaming going on around me.

We are all connected..... To each other, biologically...... To the Earth, chemically...... To the rest of the Universe atomically.

Yes, and 60fps is very much needed for VR. And no, we cant calm down, WE NEED WAAAAR!

I feel like if people would just acknowledge that the update seems to have been great for some folks and bad for others, then we could avoid a lot of the pointless bickering.  But on one hand you have people saying that nothing is worse, and if you're affected by the pop-ins or the blurry textures obviously you're doing 'it' wrong, and on the other hand you have folks saying the sim ran perfectly fine before and nothing needed to change (ignoring how bad it could be performance wise for those with lower end machines).  And each side doubles down and refuses to acknowledge that the other may have a point.  It's beyond juvenile.

I'm sad about the update, because I have a high end machine which I built specifically to play MSFS and it's nowhere near being taxed.  But I'm also aware that this has been incredible for a ton of folks who can now fly in built up urban areas when they couldn't before.  It would have been nice if they'd given those of us who can handle it the option to adjust the culling etc. but very possible they were just slammed trying to get this update out.  So like 767 said, I guess we wait and trust Asobo and hope they let us tweak things back upwards in the next update.

For some people this is their hobby, and the update has significantly curtailed their enjoyment of it.  It's understandable they're frustrated.

Wouldn't that make a refreshing change?!😊

Personally, the improvements are great for me, but the problems can spoil those improvements (most notably the CTDs and screen freezes). But to expect software as sophisticated as this to be perfect for everyone after an update is naïve. Just got to take the rough with the smooth while things are tweaked.

OS:     Win11 Home; Mobo: Asus TUF Gaming Z690-Plus WiFi D4; CPU: Intel i5-12400 (Alder Lake) 4.4 GHz
RAM: Corsair Vengeance DDR4 64Gb (4x16GB) 3600 MHz; GPU:  MSI Radeon RX 5700XT [8GB]
SSD:  Corsair Force MP510 (for OS);  2x 1TB & 1x 2TB Sabrent Rocket Nvme PCIe 4.0 (one for sim, two for addons)
HDD:  Seagate 3TB (Data); Seagate 1TB (Programs), ASUS TUF Gaming VG32VQ1B Curved 31.5" monitor, 1440p, 38Mbs ethernet

Fulcrum One Yoke, Honeycomb Bravo throttle, Thrustmaster Airbus TCA sidestick & throttle, Logitech Pro pedals, Xbox wireless gamepad (1st gen)

While MOST here have been experiencing the NEW MSFS for just a couple of days, I have been dealing with this for a few weeks now. While I love the performance increase, the random CTD's have been driving me insane. Along with the momentary freezes that every flight seems to have at least once. And then on Tuesday, when loading up the game, it decided I needed to update to current version, even though I was already running said version, and then proceeded to reinstall the complete game. I did open it back up this morning to check things and tried a Discovery flight and got a CTD when clicking "FLY". While the performance is nice, it had been months since I had seen a CTD. It is making me find other things to do now, like watching Dexter..

Well exactly. Keep calm people, it's a toy aeroplane game.

And if anyone seriously thought that a game which can run on two different platforms (one of which has near infinitesimal hardware combinations), which has multiplayer connection, streams the entire world in scenery in real time and has literally thousands of people connected to the same server, could have a complete rehash patch and patch all of its in-store add-ons as well as be dependent on exterior mods and all their patches in order to be glitch-free, and not have any issues, then they really do need to step away from the crack pipe, because freaking out about it, when we know it will get sorted out - and it will - is just pointless.

I would really love to see some of these people if they ever found themselves in a real crisis, and the idea of some of these people ever getting into difficulties in a real aeroplane just doesn't bear thinking about. 🤣

And of course not to forget that the extra revenue from xbox users will help all of us in the long run. They're levering on both the great technical and commercial platforms; never dared I dream Flight Simulator would be at the centre of this. How lucky we are indeed!

One thing I wish people would stop doing is firing up multiple mods, getting a crash, and then making a thread blaming something at random.  That's no way to debug or test anything.

Our modding community is great, but give them a few days to update their stuff.  Most of them are on it quickly.

We need to find out what the issues are with vanilla to even have a chance to make any progress.

Craig from KBUF

I have a middle of the road system built especially for X-plane back 5 years ago. Described below in sig.

I run 4 monitors in 1080. One is a touch screen running AirManager with Knobster control as well as touch control of all the buttons and dials.

I also have several home built Arduino and LeoBodnar controllers hooked into my USB hubs, and lots of different Hotas and Honeycomb controllers.

It took me about 4 hrs to download and instal this update 5. It then took about 2 hrs to figure out how to get all my AirManger peripherals working like Garmins. But I got them all running and so far I have the DC6 and the Turbo Arrows (JF) as well as the new 172 on floats both steam and glass cockpits.

I have not had any crashes at all, I only saw 2 stutters taking off from KSFO. The rest of the time it has been very smooth sailing, I mean flying. My frame rate is about 15-20% better and I see no deterioration in the scenery, it just seems smoother even at 28 fps coming into KBOS in the DC6, no stuttering at all.

This to me is pretty typical of all updates so far for FS2020. You just need to step back and update what needs updating or wait for updates. Use what works. And tweak your system if you need to. I really saw no major problems just small things that needed sorting like changing the mouse to legacy, in order for AirManager to be able to control radios etc, this was necessary, it took me a while to figure out.

I am sure MS/ASOBO will fix obvious things like the spinning volume dial on the G430, all you have to do is touch it with the mouse and it stops and turns on.

Like Chuck said above, all the complainers seem to just focus on the problems, not how to work around them and enjoy what works. I once took a lightning hit in my C177 on an instrument approach into a mountain airport and my radios all crapped out. I just kept heading and decent rate, ILS was gone. I broke out 700' AGL lined up with the airport and landed fine. Use what you have and make it work, don't panic. I had a hand held NavCom to call the tower once on the ground, I was already cleared for the approach and landing. But I flew the plane, I was alone so I waited to communicate until it was safe. That was an interesting flight.

Avsim seems an oasis of peace. Its the MSFS forums that are going crazy.

Totally agree! I canceled flight today (consider it RL CTD after update) because of airplane equipment broke and it was essential to flight training. Well, we reschedule flight for later date. No one rolled tarmac and screamed 🙂

Its my hobby too. I have probably 1000 hours in the sim. And lots of money. I am not pleased with the update, but I am not going to go on about the sky falling. This happens every single time on this forum. It will get fixed. Take a deep breath. First world problems folks.
