If I want to use a higher LOD, I just want to do it using the sliders, not by modifying the UserOpt.cfg file, which I think is not a proper way to do it. If MS/Asobo sustain the sim has now better performance capabilities, they should have included the possibility to use higher settings for those sliders, which seems not to be the case with SU5. They said they are considering allowing the sliders to go further in the next World Update. There seems no technical reason to not do it. The original reason to stop at 200 seems to be that 200 is "good enough" for most people and the risk of allowing bigger LOD numbers is that idiots with mediocre machines will wind it up to the new max and then swamp the forums with claims the game is rubbish because they only get 10 FPS .

August 7, 20214 yr It's stunning how real this sim looks now. It makes me wonder sometimes that the virtual world is looking better than reality. August 7, 20214 yr I think LOD 900 is an absolute waste of system resources. I have done testing at 300, 400, and 500... and don't really notice much difference at any once you go above 300. Especially after HF2 now. August 7, 20214 yr Seems like the majority of the community now are really happy about this hotfix, unlike the last hotfix where people were still bashing Asobo pretty hard, lol. Good to see that most of us are happy about this hotfix. Now all we need is the slider to control the culling and pop-ins which is coming in World Update 6. With the slider to control the culling and pop-ins, then we will have everything we actually wanted from SU5. Edited August 7, 20214 yr by abrams_tank i5-12400, RTX 3060 Ti, 32 GB RAM

Microsoft/Asobo know that X-Box players are very casual simmers. After one month, most X-Box players will get bored of MSFS and move on to the next game. Since Microsoft/Asobo intends to make money from the MSFS marketplace sales, steady income from the long run for the MSFS marketplace will obviously be coming from PC users of MSFS, who are the more "hardcore" simmers. Over the years, it will be PC users of MSFS that will keep MSFS alive and keep the money flowing in the MSFS marketplace. X-Box is like a short term revenue surge for Microsoft (albeit, a very nice short term revenue surge if they sold a lot of copies on X-Box). Much of the longer term revenue will come from the MSFS marketplace. Assuming the next X-Box won't be released for another 5 to 7 years, it's kind of silly to keep MSFS locked down to X-Box Series X graphics. 5 years from now in 2026, the PC graphics cards and CPUs will be running laps around X-Box Series X - it doesn't make sense to keep MSFS locked to X-Box Series X graphics from 2021, when we are in 2026. August 7, 20214 yr 4 hours ago, Glenn Fitzpatrick said: You have always had the ability to increase LOD beyond the 200 the sliders give. This is not an SU5 thing. The only issue with it is the game will commonly reset it back to 200 the next time you start unless you make the config file read only. Most people think the reason they limit it to just 200 is that a lot of people (including reviewers) are obsessed with "Ultra" settings regardless of what that Ultra setting actually is. People just want the street cred of saying I can run game xxx at max settings and get yyy FPS. Making the LOD go to say 500 on so will kill performance on mediocre systems. This is compounded by the fact that a lot of people with a 3 year old 8GB/i7/1080ti rig mistakenly think it is still "high end" and should handle max settings in game at 4K, whereas by modern standards that sort of 3 year old rig is now definitely mid-range. Nothing bad will happen to your game or PC if you try it at say 300. if it causes too much of a performance hit just reset it to 200. This is not necessary. You have only to set the Graphics Preset to Custom in the UserCfg. This will keep your manual LOD settings untouched as long as you do not move the LOD sliders itself. {Graphics Version 1.1.0 Preset Custom {Texture MaxAnisotropy 16 Quality 0 } {SuperSampling SuperSampling 3 } {Terrain LoDFactor 5.000000 } {ObjectsLoD LoDFactor 5.000000 } ... - Harry 9800x3D (Strix x870e-E) - 64GB RAM (DDR5 6000, CL 30) - RTX 5090, 34'' 1440p OLED HDR - Windows 11 Pro (1TB M.2) - MSFS 2024 (MS Store, 4TB M.2).
