Anything these days should be straightforward, there is no reason on earth why it should be so user unfriendly......unless of course they want to deter the casual user who really doesn't have the time to faff around. I've always wondered about that too - why on earth was it called Discord, with all the negative connotations that you've highlighted ? I wonder if they meant to call it Discourse, but got mixed up - like people do with 'infamous' when they actually mean famous.

I joined because of DCS, have received a hundred notifications that I was "mentioned", and looked at it a few times, and have absolutely no idea how to use it.

 

I know it's there and I never use it.

I'm also not a great Discord fan but it is the place to get a quick answer and stay up to date if you join the right channel

 

 

For VOIP, I liked it a lot. I played AoE with some friends, and we used Discord as voice server. I loved it...

For technical support? I absolutely dislike it. I tried finding information there, even with the search button, I never managed to do so. I placed a quick question here, in 10 minutes someone replied to it. The most important thing: a quick Google search can retrieve this information back in less than 30 seconds. Try that with Discord.

Yeah....the real trick to painting 3d models on 2d maps is wrapping your brain (pun intended) around the method the rendering engine is going to wrap that 2d flat image around a 3d, cylindrical tube. 😉 

Once you understand that concept and come to grips that on the "pointy ends" of the tube...you'll be painting compound curves, the concept of painting these things becomes a less daunting. 🙂

I agree, perhaps its an age thing (51) but I just for the life of me do not get Discord.  I've tried navigating a few accounts like REX or another, whose name I have forgotten (FBW I think), and it is a complete and utter mess.  Finding stuff, even reading posts without scrolling through a never ending list of comments from 1000s of members all within the same thread but talking or replying to different people on different subject matters. It all reminds me of the ancient primitive Usenet Newsgroups you used to access from Outlook Express back before Facebook etc was a thing. 

Do developers simply use it because it is free and hosting a forum on their websites would cost money?  I have seen many folks encourage those they are currently chatting to on Facebook etc to continue on Discord, a clear ulterior motive to enlarge their members.

It's something new an Lord knows society hates new and learning. I'm 70 and have no problem with Discord.

Hehe....I'm 10 years your junior and struggled initially with it, but like every other new thing I've had to learn, I just tear into it until I get it down.  

You want difficult to learn?  Try wrapping your head around creating a custom yellow-green gradient for a lavishly painted Alaskan airline....the myriad of options you need to fiddle with can be challenging, to say the least. 🙂

But I learn them....because I want to give this paint to you guys when the 737 releases.

It seems the way with much of social media these days that navigating it is less than straightforward or logical. I don't use Twitter or Instagram but sometimes I'm pointed to a comment on one of those, but it has often sunk so far down the list of items that I often never find it! Even Facebook, which used to be almost entirely chronologically ordered has a habit of mixing things up. I just don't have time for searching for something I may ultimately find I wasn't interested in.🙄

Irony: people talking on an internet forum about how they dislike an internet communication/community tool 😄
