I made a thread about it a number of days ago. It got kind of heated.

Been there done that myself!  Understand!

I have a virgin install of MSFS and SU5 brought on CTD issues for me.  Prior to SU5 I had maybe 2.  Since, probably 6 or 7 now.  Clearly something IN SU5 created this.  Just because all users didn't have the same frequency of manifestations of this does not imply the software isn't borked, it likely means the changes in SU5 did not consider all of the same potential factors that obviously weren't coming into play pre SU5.

And I have a clean install with no add ons and an up to date Windows installation and have not had a single CTD after hours and hours of post-SU5 flying.

So my point, that so many seem not to understand, is that it seems to take a specific set of use cases or configurations to trigger crashes. Obviously you have one or more of those.

So is it an incompatibility in hardware, a driver, in something else? Could be all of the above. If the software was just bugged and crashed, then everyone would experience the same thing and be able to reproduce the crashes.

It doesn’t mean you’ve done anything wrong. Folks have to stop being defensive. It just means there’s an incompatibility induced by a combination of your configuration and the way you use the game. Could Asobo have coded that in? Sure and they probably need to fix it, but it’s use case specific.

For those who have had very few issues since SU5 compared to others, are you running the Steam or MS Store version?

No crashes after SU5 (except when I overclocked in BIOS more than I had been). Running Steam version.  And is very stable. Have only a dozen or so things in community.

5800X3D, RTX4070, 600 Watt, one or two 1440p 32" screens, 64 GB RAM, 4 TB  PCle 3 NVMe, Warthog throttle, VKB NXT EVO stick, Honeycomb Alpha yoke, CH quad, 3 Logitech panels, 2 StreamDecks, Desktop Aviator Trim Panel. Crystal Light VR.

But just a small increase of overclocking brought loads of CTD's. I think the issue may be something in SU5 is putting loads of pressure on the cpu, making the cpu suddenly run away, rather than something in SU5 is causing a logical programming loop failure.

Posting the following SOLEY as a datapoint to help figure out what is causing CTDs for many.  Please dont take this as a "my system works, yours doesnt" kind of thing. Just trying to show that there are some (and hopefully move us towards some sense of which) systems out there where the sim is working as intended,

Have never reinstalled since launch - use a ton of addons, including FBW (havent used it since SU5 its worth stating however).

I do use Addon linker mostly to improve load times - broke up scenery into subdirectories by region - only select what I want to see in the session.  If I link them all, the sim can take 10 minutes to load everything..

I remember a handful of CTDs since launch - first two occurrences were repeatable shortly after the UK update - flying out of London City - would crash over Regents park - that turned out to be an addon conflict.  Then another shortly after updating to SU5 that has not reoccurred.

System is:

i9-9820X (10 core) 3.3MHz - overclocked 30%.  ASUS motherboard

ASUS ROG 3090RTX - It comes overclocked from ASUS I believe

128G RAM

SSD 1TB NVMe - This is my 😄 drive which has MSFS executable

SSD 1TB (non NVMe) - This has my community, official, and linked folders

I use a HP Reverb2 for VR

I personally am very pleased to see the positivity in this thread because the official forums are wall to wall negativity.

True, theres an almost infinite variety of configurations of PCs out there, affects us all differently.

I plan on building a new rig and look forward to enjoying MSFS to its fullest. Right now on this old one I can only fly GA low and slow out over the boonies or very small villages. Forest density does not affect me at all, I have trees maxed out and can get upto 45FPS.

But  cannot fly airliners and cannot fly near any cities. FPS drops to single digits.

When you have a new rig that can run MSFS well, you should find that cities make little difference in FPS. At least this is my experience after SU5. Before the update, I was seeing a major drop in performance over places like London and NYC, but after SU5 I see around 55-60 FPS almost everywhere, including big cities, with no discernible loss of quality -- and this is on ULTRA settings. It is really amazing.

One CTD in past couple of months - flying the new floaty Husky in a multiplayer stream with about 150 people on line.

My suspicion is it was the multiplayer a few people where having CTD in the stream and not all were in the Husky.

When SU5 first came out every single attempt I made to load the game resulted in a freeze or CTD. I gave up trying for a fortnight.

Since the August Windows update to Game Mode, stability has improved a lot. Unfortunately for Asobo I used that 2 weeks to get into DCS so now I'm doing very little MSFS!

This is very good news! I look forward to it. Right now I still use X-Plane for airliner flying because FPS in airliners in MSFS are single digit for me. So I cant fly tubeliners into places like Singapore, Los Angeles,  Seoul, Tokyo etc. in MSFS.

This sim is a bit mysterious.

Yesterday it loaded up fast. The "Checking for updates" screen took 10-20 seconds, the whole startup less than a minute.

Today it takes several minutes to load. Mostly waiting in the "Checking for updates" screen, which takes now more than 3 minutes by itself. The rest of the start screens also load up about half as fast as the day before.

In-sim performance seems about the same.

What changed between yesterday and today?

Nothing. No Windows updates. No sim updates. Nothing changed in Community folder. No new driver or change in NCP. No change in UserCfg. Nada. My internet connection is the same, 750 / 500 no jitter, 2 ms ping.

So what does that leave? I can only think of two things:

1. Server side changes?
2. Local Cache? Yesterday I flew from Monterrey across San Francisco to Napa Valley. Could this be the reason? I doubt it. My cache is on an M.2 drive.

The servers do seem to struggle... lets see what MS is prepared to do to fix this.. 😉

We are dependent on their streaming infrastructure and maybe the increasing user count is putting their infrastructure to a test..

I too am one of the lucky ones. I don’t know why but of course I am not complaining. Given my ageing PC, performance of the sim is rather astounding and as of right now, finding it hard to justify investing in new hardware. If it works, don’t fix it as they say.

The CTD’s are a real problem for far too many people though and even the Xbox gang are getting them. MS and Asobo need to get on top of this and have to iron these things out quickly, as over time, this could kill it for many otherwise enthusiastic simmers. Nothing worse that a CTD on short final after a 2 hour flight. Makes you feel like you just wasted 2 hours of your life that you will never get back.

Hmmm.... but on the other hand, in the glass is half full mode --isn't the journey the reward?  Even when incomplete it's still better than nothing? 🙂

Hardware: i7-8700k, GTX 1070-ti, 32GB ram, NVMe/SSD drives with lots of free space.
Software: latest Windows 10 Pro, P3Dv4.5+, FSX Steam, and lots of addons (100+ mostly Orbx stuff).

That's the way I pretty much think of it, bolstered by the fact that I have all too clear a memory of exactly where we came from.

We are all connected..... To each other, biologically...... To the Earth, chemically...... To the rest of the Universe atomically.

I had so many addons in my FSX… FS2002 airplanes, FS98 sceneries, tons of free/pay content. No CTD at all.

It just doesn’t make sense things like “oh, clear your community folder” or “tweak this *cfg file” or “change priorities in task manager”.
