FLIGHTSM EXPO

Obviously, neither MS with MSFS nor LM with P3D choose to take part in the FSExpo. In my mind, that's a real pity for both, but a matter of fact. Aside a few (nice) hardware gadgets, it obviously became a massive X-Plane celebration, and that's all.

However this happened and what went wrong in preparation, this certainly can't be called a world conference of flight simulation anymore. It better would have termed XPExpo.

Kind regards, Michael

? LM was there. They just didn't have anything interesting to say, which is even worse IMO.

Ah thanks, then I agree, seemingly they were so quiet that no one detected them.

Grant my  assumption that P3D was designed as a military training  tool and the consumer version is a minor corporate afterthought. If that is the case, development on the military side might logically be omitted from the consumer “product”. Thus, we are  left with technical crumbs and issues that will not be confronted by LM to our satisfaction.
Still, overall IMO, we have a workable platform, flawed as it may be, that satisfies many, except for  the more sophisticated flight simmers among us.

forums such as this one, benefit us all thanks to the sharing of knowledge we see here every day.

The presentation was very low key and was basically just a summary of what P3D is, it certainly wasn’t like the up beat presentations I watched online a couple of years ago where they talked about upcoming features they were working on.

There seems to have been a significant sea change.

For frame of reference, XP had the room full, when LM spoke, only 1/3 of room was occupied. And they didn't have anything to say other than they will keep P3D going due to USAF interest. And 3PD's will need to provide for the kind of stuff that we home simmers will want. Ergo, that's the problem, 3PD's have all but abandoned P3D.

My take, as the years progress, we will all be on MSFS. New P3D versions will be focused on USAF requirements and our current 3PD products will become dated and/or not be able to be used without an update from the 3PD that will never come.

I watched the LM presentation.  I think the one upside, specifically noted by the presenter, is that the product isn't going anywhere and active development continues due to Lockheed's commitments to its military/commercial customers.  On the other hand, as has been pointed in multiple discussions and threads, the consumer-focused third-party developers are going to eventually spend their more, if not all, of their time and efforts on other platforms.

Imagine if this was an investor call for a major corporation. It would have a lot to say about potential future investors on which of the two technologies would prevail. I think it has become clear increasingly that the days of the ESP engine are numbered for the home consumer market.

For that to happen someone from LM would need to come to your house and uninstall your P3D installation. That seems unlikely. 😉 P3D will stay on my system for as long as I want it to.

Yes, sure. I gues FS2004 users can still say the same.

At least the sim is stable for me and I am not getting the dreaded Device Hung errors, but even XP11 has better volumetric clouds available at this point.

With the risk of "plagiarizing" a different topic, it would be good to know what we can look forward to (besides a handful of 3rd. party aircraft).

I believe there are still businesses who are using MS XP quite happily😆.

For me, P3D is stable, gives excellent performance and with my add-ons, extremely good graphics.

I don't need to spend another great lump of money to get yet another Simulator, when the one I have is all I need.

Folks,

Nobody can predict the future.

The take for me is: P3D development is not stopping, now when I go and ask Lockheed Martin devs for new features they normally put then in place withing 1 or 2 point releases, and as far as I am aware I am not the USAF. Therefore the truth is, P3D development continues.

XP development also continues and now XP12 is on the horizon.. so don't you guys see the bigger picture here? yes MSFS came out and shaken everything.. but it is pushing the other platforms to catch up.. So the question is not about if can they catch up, the question is "when".. and this is the key point to focus.. P3D and XP continue to push their platforms forward, they might not do it as fast as MSFS.. but they do..

Markets fluctuate all the time, it is part of life.. today most users are using MSFS.. in 5-10 years they might not.. the clear message from Laminar Research and Lockheed Martin is, we are not intimidated by MSFS, we will continue to develop regardless of whats happening.

Microsoft abandoned the market once, as far as I remember Laminar Research has never abandoned it.. neither P3D.. so.. no need to be afraid.. enjoy what you like today, the future chaps, is very hard to predict but it seems you will have 3 platforms to choose from during the next 7-10 years.. is that a bad future? :wink

I've never forgotten that. Bill Gates loved flight sim and that's why he bought Bruce Artwick's flight sim. Hence why all scenery files are called BGLs - Bruce's Graphical Language.

Bill sold Microsoft and the new owners never had the same love for flight sim. All they were concerned with was did it make them money. After FSX was released and performance dived that probably brought about its demise.

MSFS is more complicated with two companies involved. More chance that there might be disagreements about the direction of the project. Microsoft's servers will be costing them and who knows how long they'll remain free. Maybe a subscription model might come in which would definitely make some think about staying with them.

Interesting and well-reasoned discussion from everyone on the future. I also think there's still a lot to look forward too.

So with that, I have decided to order my crystal ball.  I will let you know if/when it turns up. In the meantime I'm off to read my tea leaves to find out what P3D's next major advancement will be! 🤨
