FlightGear is the superior "real simulator" which will put all of other simulators out of business.

Nope, it isn't.  The 'real', 'real simulator', is the huge news Greazer referred to and I'm going to take a chance and let the cat out of the bag:  it's called OxyMoron-F, the only 'real' flight 'simulator'.  It's coming out on Nintendo first, then Atari, and rumor has it it's even coming out on AM Radio so will quickly surpass all the installs of all flight sims ever created within two weeks.   MS/Asobo is going to announce they've decided there is no way they can compete with OM-F so that is the huge announcement--they're closing shop and moving on.

Don't forget to mention the Gold Edition that goes by the name of OM-F-G, no way Asobo (or Laminar Research) will be able to beat it! 😂

To be fair, though, one has to wonder what PMDG's DC-6 sales would have looked like in a market with many more options.  The DC-6 was a fringe product in the other sims, and with plenty of other, more modern options available, it's no wonder it didn't sell well.

In MSFS it was all alone as the first payware add-on from an established developer, and in the company of few other decent options available of any acft type from any developer.

When you're the only girl at the dance, the fact of your incredible popularity there isn't that remarkable.  You could be as ugly as the south end of a northbound donkey, and you're still gonna be the belle of the ball.

Speaking of butt ugly--who would have bought a Captainsim 777 add-on with a Frankensteined default 4-engine panel in any other sim?

Finally smart analysis of the situation

9950X3D, X870E ROG CROSSHAIR HERO, Corsair Dominator Titanium 64GB DDR5-6000 PC5-48000, ASUS RTX 5070Ti 16GB, 9100 PRO 4TB Samsung ,990 PRO 4TB Samsung,  AX1600i 1600 Watt 80 Plus Titanium ATX, ASUS 360 ARGB EXTREME 360mm Liquid CPU Cooling Kit.

For those waiting, it is up on the in-game store now. Just purchased and downloaded.

Quite a while ago I read somewhere (can't find it now) that over 2 million copies of MSFS had been sold, and this was before the X-Box release. If that is close to being true, if even a small percentage of users buy a particular a/c, that number can be a very profitable one. I have been very surprised to see some a/c in the Marketplace with on the order of 2000+ votes, even for a common aircraft type, and I expect less than 1 in 10 buyers actually votes. It seems to me the size of the MSFS market really is a game changer for developers, and now especially so with the Xbox release. So I am not surprised the DC-6 has done very well, as apparently has the Aerosoft CRJ.

Would also be silly to discuss the DC-3 when the topic is about the DC-6 😁

I jest.

Thanks for sharing that information with us.  Always good to get some numbers from an actual third party dev that has products in the MSFS marketplace.👍

Fair enough, but it doesn't really matter does it?  This just means that it was smart of PMDG to get in before the rush with an otherwise more obscure offering.  They'll kind of get to have their cake and eat it too by selling a lot of DC-6's and THEN follow up with most likely better sales of the more popular planes.

The real takeaway from the interview is not so much the success of any one particular aircraft addon, but the apparent size of the potential market for any developer on the platform.  There is a huge demand for content by a consumer base that seems to be growing at a steady pace if you take PDMG's (and Aerosoft's) comments at face value.  That can only be a good thing for this hobby of ours.

Lot of discussion on this and many opinions offered. I am not sure I understand the contention that the DC-6 is a "fringe" product. PMDG developed it a few years ago and sold it for P3D and X-Plane, along with its other "non-fringe" products. Perhaps the only surprise is that PMDG chose it to be its first offering in MSFS. Other than it is a "vintage" aircraft, we really do not know how its sales have compared with other PMDG products, and we do not know if PMDG consider it a fringe product or not.  It is not the only vintage aircraft they have developed. And PMDG is certainly not the only developer who have offered vintage aircraft, including for example Aeroplane Heaven and JustFlight, and presumably they have sold well.
