My biggest complaint about MSFS: trees are too rounded

Featured Replies

My biggest complaint about MSFS is the shape of trees. They look OK from ground level, but can be a big eye sore looking down from the sky. The tree canopy is too rounded like mushrooms, or broccolis, just not real trees. It can be worse, as they often gave my goose bumps, thinking about diseased skin.

I found the modded trees from Rex Accuseason are much better. The modded trees are a bit monotonous, but they look normal, healthy, and real. I wish Asobo can pay more attention to trees, as they are so important for the look of the sim, and our life! At least you can make them less rounded all over the world. And then maybe more varieties, and more realistic looking.

I have attached the default and modded trees for the comparion. I'd greatly appreciate it if you could vote on this wish on the official MSFS forum. : https://forums.flightsimulator.com/t/please-make-trees-look-less-rounded/498857

That's just because there is a different mix of deciduous and coniferous trees. Which is correct for those areas of woodland I do not know. If you want only pointy trees just fly where pointy trees actually grow in the real world. In general that's mountainous and colder regions. (But then there's the complication that not all deciduous trees have rounded crowns and not all coniferous trees are pointy.😀 I'm not sure whether  Rex has added any extra species to the meagre range of default trees but Bijan has a few new models.) To think that Asobo will prioritise your 'issue' is, I'm afraid, a pipe dream. It's fine as it is although some may wish to fiddle with the mix of trees to better reflect reality for specific areas.

Oh, and by the way pointy trees don't go brown in the Autumn (yes, yes, I know there are a few that do) so if you get your way or fly where you won't see those nasty round blobs you can just throw away Rex Seasons because having it installed will be, well, pointless.

Well I don't think its that important but I do tend to agree with the OP they could be better after all its still part of the immersion.

If you’re a sightseer, as I consider myself to be - as MSFS lacks serious planes like the Majestic Dash 8 or FSL Airbus I used to try flying by the book in P3D - yes the trees can be improved.

I use Bijans Seasons which imho greatly improves MSFS trees. (Ps I know the FBW Airbus is good and getting better, and free, but I’ve not engaged with it yet).

Whilst I wouldn't rate it as the most important thing to fix, I do agree with the appraisal.

We arent all cruising at 36k on Otto Pilot, low and slow VFR flight is arguably this sims strong point and in that regime these things whilst not game changers do make a difference to immersion which is something I think we all strive for.

Man, I'm surprised at the vitriol expressed towards the OP.  He's right that default MSFS trees aren't great. It may not matter to you, but this is situational depending on the type of flying you're simulating.  Airline or GA IFR stuff, yes.  Trees are irrelevant.

But if you like low and slow, and especially bush flying, this becomes more important.  I've been spending a lot of time in bush strips in New Guinea recently, and when I load up a strip in the scenery editor (removing the Bijan trees and making things default) I'm amazed at how much worse it looks.  Vegetation type makes a HUGE difference in a place like this.

Happily, we DO have aftermarket veg that's better.  Bijan's trees are great for me. I hear REX is good too.  So I kind of agree that Asobo shouldn't be making default vegetation a priority, given that we've got good 3rd party options.  But scoffing at the idea that accurate vegetation is important to realism for certain types of flight is... not cool.

I’ve hidden several unhelpful posts in this topic. The OP has an opinion which is entirely valid. If you have nothing positive to say just move on.

Denigrating him for having an opinion you disagree with doesn’t reflect well.

I don't understand the negative reaction to OP. Different strokes for different folks. Some people may not be systems enthusiasts and are more visual flyers.

OP, have a look at Bijan's tree pack to add a global variety of trees to your sim.

In my view the trees are to big and bushes etc. seem to be drawn as trees as well and the world ends up with too many trees.

There's a few suggestions for third party remedies to the tree issues. I use addon workarounds for other issues so I can see the attraction but it really is a double edged sword. It rather reduces the urgency and the inclination for Asobo to address the issues.

In general I think trees need some love for many reasons.

I feel the same way but also think they look quite poor at ground level too, especially the appearance of multiple layers of 2d branches and the morphing as they approach, but I appreciate that they may be like this to obtain the fps MSFS team have achieved.

With all due respect, there are no "helpful" responses to this post (including the ones not removed).  I'm not even sure how one would go about helping, when the OP is simply stating he/she (really) doesn't like the appearance of trees in the sim.  I didn't see the removed posts so have no opinion on their quality, but hopefully we are allowed to disagree on these forums.  I honestly thought the OP was being facetious when I read the thread title...
