My biggest complaint about MSFS: trees are too rounded

Featured Replies

To the subject of the OP, the trees look very much like the footprint they are on from above. Looks good to me. Make them pointy and people will complain that there's too much coniferous trees. Make them square and people will complain that there are too many green buildings in the city.

So we have X-plane, where for at least a decade the trees have either been flat, with a few that appear to be an X from above, or we have FSX where the trees are also an X, and are generally too large (along with the buildings) and finally we have P3D with the oddest dayglow speed-trees ever seen. (at least they were last time I used the sim) Are they were still there?

For myself, I would say that the msfs trees handily beat them all, but as per usual we're going to demand micrometer perfection.

So far, they've been accused of being too big, or of having problematic LOD, and now they're too round.

And even if all the hypothetical Goldilocks analogs out there eventually find the one that's just right, you can bet there'll be a whole boatload of other people who quickly step forward to disagree and offer their own different and competing criteria.

Near as I can tell the programmers at Asobo must do everything they can to avoid the temptation to read the forums.  To pour your heart and soul into something so challenging to do, yet so tedious and so unforgiving, then to read the litany of the chronically dissatisfied must indeed be migraine-inducing.  My sense is much of the architecture in MSFS is such that it does not mean a major re-write to improve satellite imagery in MSFS when that's done in Bing, or when they decide to focus on adding more tree variety, it will be a case of reviewing and refining the criteria for how to populate a certain defined area then plugging those new tree options in.  This is part of their "10 year" strategy is my guess.  We are so used to the other sims which were painfully slow to evolve.  I think about P3D and it boggles the mind just how slowly it progressed with a new version for $200 every 2y which offered such wretchedly weak improvements.   I fully expect MS/Asobo to advance this sim in MORE innovative ways over the coming years, for example shader-driven seasonal changes synced to day of the year and GPS location including elevation data such that we will live in an environment that changes by week.  I can see the leafless deciduous trees in winter.  The stuff we all clamor for--the mature SDK, other basics present in mature flight sims--is really the easy part as there are already great examples to emulate and a lot of knowledge to draw from.  Much less the case with pioneering novel technologies.   Right now, 1.5y after initial debut with a major detour to accomodate Xbox, and MS certainly knows what next gen Xbox will bring to the table, we're already looking fabulous.  I'm blown away regularly, still, and yet I fly only two planes, and they're default.  I am starting to miss the fabulous career addon for FSX/P3D, FSCaptain.  When it and GSX for MSFS arrive it will be hard to tear myself away.  Even w/o those two fabulous addons I still log more hours now than ever per month than in the past 20+y with the other sims.

I haven't seen such mushroom shaped trees from above in real life.

In my view the trees are to big and bushes etc. seem to be drawn as trees as well and the world ends up with too many trees.

I agree with OP and from my perspective the trees are far too numerous as is evidenced when we see them growing out of city streets and bridges!

I for one would be happy with half as many trees as we are blessed with now.

I think the blades of grass are too "pointy"...🤓

I’ve hidden several unhelpful posts in this topic. The OP has an opinion which is entirely valid. If you have nothing positive to say just move on.

Denigrating him for having an opinion you disagree with doesn’t reflect well.

Having an opinion you disagree with...? Hmm, that seems to be par of the course with most things these days Ray.

Had some 50-70 kts ground wind at ENAL today and the trees were literally swaying in the wind, first time I actually realized that, looked pretty impressive

Do they move with the wind or randomly in all directions? With 50-70 kts it should be clearly visible.

Then mow them.

I would really be interested ... trees swaying with the wind can save your life 😉 . No joke - although, not for all pilots in all circumstances, but yet.

For me the trees have been bad enough to make me buy Bijan's seasons a year ago. Mostly for the trees, didn't care much about the seasons back then, but enjoying the seasonal variety too now. Never looked back!

So I totally get the point about the default trees looking a bit weird and being too uniform in shape and colour.  I just wouldn't say that was my biggest complaint, and now that I have my tree issues solved, even less so.

My simming system: AMD Ryzen 5800X3D, 32GB RAM, RTX 4070 Ti Super 16GB, LG 38" 3840x1600

Does Bijan's 4 season mod fix the OP's round tree issue?

Yes it does.  Bijan's has what seems like dozens of different tree models, used appropriately by region.  Ironically, what finally convinced me to buy the mod was doing some simming back where I'm from in the midwest US... where the default trees aren't round *enough*.  Looks much better there with true deciduous trees like oak and maple.  Up in the northwest where I live, now trees are properly pointy fir and cedar.  Jungles of New Guinea are now properly broadleaf, bright green tropical.  I'm honestly surprised how much of a difference it makes.

Wow sounds enticing. Will Bijan's ever be in the Marketplace?

I'm pretty sure t's in the marketplace already,  "Bijan's Seasons".    I don't know if the market version includes it,  but at least with the SimMarket version he added a new GUI that let's you easily change seasons,  and also has an option to automatically change seasons.   It allows you to enabled / disable his terrain masks,  and set the opacity of them.

Bijan's "Islands and Boats" is a nice product too,  imo.  I really appreciate it's business model.   For the unaware,  when you purchase a copy at SimMarket you get to email Bijan with your order number and select one small location in the sim for scenery improvements.   I selected Cape May,  New Jersey (USA),  and he added a bunch of marina slips and boats in the appropriate locations.   The New Jersey coastline is quite bland in the sim, imo.   It's a lot better with Bijan's tweaks.
