Track IR

Would like to ask if TrackIr is heavy on system?

I have tried freeware system based on web camera - apart of bad movement i noticed huge system load.

I may consider TrackIr purchase only in case my I5 will handle that without having all cores working on 100%.

More the other way around. On very rare occasions on low end systems, if the game loads the CPU down too much the trackir can stall for a second.  It is extremely rare and the solution if you have the issue is easy, dedicate a core to trackir and exclude the game from that core.

If this helps. I have a fairly low end AMD Ryzen 5 laptop with dual video csrds (2 gb onboard and 3 gb Nvidia) and I use TrackIR. Zero noticeable effect when using it against not using it.

I will add to what has already been said about TrackIR.  I have had my TrackIR 4 for a good 17 years and the moment it stops working is the moment I stop simming. I now use MSFS but came FS9, FSX and a decade of using Prepar3D and could never understand why the sim community became obsessed with the couple of static camera apps available.  I just could not see the appeal of pressing randomly assigned keys on your keyboard or game pad to flick through a dozen different views. Lets not even go there with regards to looking about with a hatswitch 😄  Why do that when you can just move your head and body like you would in the real world?

I imagine those with difficulties using it either have a poorly configured profile or a small monitor.  Given you still have to look at the screen whilst turning your head a little it could lead to eye strain.  I know it used to tire me on my old small 24" screen but since getting a 40" 4K monitor its a seriously immersive tool.  It has 6 axis of movement so you can look left and right, look behind you, look up and down, move backwards and forwards and tilt your head left and right say to retain a level horizon on a turn.  I see the Seth profile mentioned, I use a version of this and also enable the precision mode to smooth and slow movements a bit.  Good tip about assigning a side mouse button to pause TIR as turning some dual selectors can be difficult.

It is basically just three bits of hi-viz reflector tape arranged in a pattern. Would not be hard to create your own, potentially permanently sticking reflector tape on a cap or hat would work.

I love and rely TrackIR so much that when MSFS broke it in a update I stopped flying until they finally patched it. I where the three LED clip attached to a set of headphones, They USB wire is wrapped around the headphones wire so it's no different than wearing a set of wired headphones alone.

Me too. I can warmly recommend it and after getting it would hate to fly without it.

The fact that it is wireless is super convenient.

... and @orchestra_nl yes, the battery is very easy to replace. Unscrew the lid, pop out and pop in. Runs on a single AA which lasts +/- 50 hours or so any way...

This looks to be a pre-order, were you in on a beta or something? I'm interested to hear your experience with it as I'm debating TrackIR as well.

@slait The product is already available and has been for some time.

From a post of mine from another thread earlier this year:

For me it has been a great buy. I got one shipped to Denmark for Xmas, so have been using it for some weeks now.

  • It arrived in a sturdy cardboard box with bubble wrap.
  • All the kit is in black ‘fly-under-the-radar’ type plastic. Quite robust.
  • Setup was easy - completely plug and play.
  • Roger has a video on Youtube guiding you through the setup with OpenTrack. 10 minutes.
  • Profiles for OpenTrack are provided on his website too.

The systems works like charm and tracking is super smooth for me. It’s quite nice that you can turn the puck on and off while flying, and it will just stop tracking... and there are no wires!

I can highly recommend it although it is my only head tracker experience.

It works fine on a 24" screen.

I'm curious for those of you that use Track IR, do you find it very useful when flying airliners or is it primarily a VFR type tool... I can't think of too many situations in IFR where i would need it but thought I would see what you all use it for when flying an airliner.  Thanks!

Tobii 5 is a modern alternative to Track IR which has not been updated in years (at least in hardware). Tobii doesn't need a headset, has eye tracking,  doesn't care about light, does exactly the same thing, can be used as a Windows Hello log in device and has a very active support presence. Natural Point (who make Track IR) have not even bothered to update their social media for more than a year. So pay your money and take your chances.

Couple of minor comments - it does care about points of light if you’re using glasses like I am, and…

it actually does much more than TIR, courtesy of the eye tracking. It’s a brilliant device!!

It ain't broke, so there's nothing to fix. You forgot to mention the Tobii costs 50% more than TrackIR, has a 25% narrower FoV and its 6DOF software is still experimental. And if you want eye tracking you're limited to a 27" screen.

I have watched dozens and dozens of Youtube videos where Track IR has been used. Have yet to see one where the they claimed that Tobii was used.

Interesting because I wear glasses and have no issues with it.

I have watched dozens of videos about Horses and their ability to count with their hooves, have yet to see one where they claimed to be able to use Track IR with a flight simulator.... almost as relevant as your comparison I suppose, but more comedic.
