Airports with interior modelling - worth it?

Others, like me, enjoy the rest.  If I could virtually drive in the city after a flight.. that would be a blast!  And given the fact that even the FBW a320 has a range of virtual coffee cups..

Actually, I've been doing this for years (I don't need to walk inside a virtual airport, however).

Whenever I'm in a country/city I've never visited, after shutting down the aircraft, I hop in Google Earth, go to Street View and drive around the city.  I've done this from St. Petersburg to Malaysia.

As long as it doesn't eat into my FPS, which apparently from a lot of the replies here is true, than I really don't care. I don't spend any time pretending I'm in a terminal waiting for a Cinnabon, but if others dig that kind of stuff, then so be it!

Depends on the addon, some quite complex very detailed airports have minimal or no FPS effect at all.  The NZA airports seem pretty good for example and the new Pyreegue EGAA Belfast (personally do not have it yet) apparently has a phenomenal amount of detail with minimal FPS loss.

Others, even with minimal animations or excessive detail can be bad both in load time and FPS and even cause a CTD. I do suspect some of the bad ones would be bad even without any animations and interior detail as there are other things (terrain modifications for example) that can also cause FPS issues if done badly.  It is also worth noting that a few older addons that previously had no issues have developed FPS issues after recent patches.

I don't mind seeing people walking around when I am "nose-in" at the gate either departing or arriving. That really does add realism. But I;m not really a fan of needing to model the entire food court and cutlery on tables.

Granted we have better rigs now and the FPS may not be as much of an issue as it used to be but personally I don;t see the need for it when all  those extra tenths-of-a-frame per second could be used outside.

😊  i dont think graphic modelling will go this far, for a while yet anyway, . more likely people and shop entrances and the like

Pyreegue EGAA Belfast comes close

(note there are no FPS complaints about this one, see 3:30 in the video above)

Big fan of internal terminal modeling as I love to roam around the entire airport. @Glenn Fitzpatrick Thanks for posting that video, I somehow missed this release and it looks amazing.

That's insane ! that is an airport simulator you know...to learn you to endure the long waiting hours and delays within the terminals and to get use to the exaggerated prices within shops LoL😁

I guess my ultimate response here is this. I do not see myself purchasing because of or paying a premium of any level for an addon airport due to interior detail or passenger-facing elements.  Aviation-facing and relevance to my flights is what matters to me.

I don't need the terminals modeled inside at the level that they currently are being done.  It's like MSFS is becoming MSPS  (Passenger Simulator).  I wonder how much time could have been devoted to another airport if forgoing the interior models.

We still don't have: Phoenix (Flightbeam), Detroit (Freeware one is passable and getting better), Minneapolis (Flightbeam), Oakland (?), Houston (FSDT) Honolulu (FSDT?), Philadelphia (?), Columbus (?), Pittsburg, Tampa (Vertical Sim?), Memphis (FSDT?), Salt Lake City (PacSim?), Colorado Springs, Austin, El Paso, Nashville, Spokane, Paine Field, Fairbanks, Hilo, Kona, Milwaukee, the list goes on and on.  Not to mention the Premium Airports that are just ok like SFO, JFK, LAX, SEA.

And Europe No CDG, NO AMS no MSP, but honestly Europe is getting covered much better than the US.

Pyreegue is now the gold standard of scenery making.

Could you Imagine Pyreegue Philidelphia or Detroit?

I suppose it depends on if it is a local or airport that you've been in.  If you decide to really get into it you can do your own modeling at your local airport.  Fun and not too hard.

When I eventually decide to switch from P3Dv4 to Microsoft Flight Simulator, the following three items will be at the top of my list......

  • Zero stutters
  • Consistently high texture quality
  • Detailed terminal interiors

I will be very interested to see what my rather modest PC is capable of rendering in Microsoft Flight Simulator @ 1080p resolution.

As long as the airport exterior details are not neglected I'm fine with interior details. Though, I'm not sure if this is always true.

They could have completed both of those instead of the inside of the Belfast parking garage...  LOL!
