No Live Weather

What are the downsides of REX comparing with MS default weather?

For me, it's mainly an overall "look".  When Asobo weather is working, the environment (clouds, sky lighting, ground shadows, etc) just appear much more realistic.  Occasionally with REX, I get bad wind shifts that I NEVER see with Asobo weather.  REX is a very good backup plan to have when these occasional outages occur.  I always fly on VATSIM and require accurate live temps, winds, altimeter readings etc.

  • Or the frequent, "Patience you must learn" comment. I hate when folks blindly defend something and stand on a hill for absolutely no reason. There are no pitch forks... no riots... just folks who want

  • Oh well, then clearly everyone else is doing it wrong including Asobo who have it listed as being under investigation. 🙄

  • True wisdom.  We have a cloud-based sim which depends on a billion things being just right in order to function, and MS/Asobo has kept the weather largely highly functional 99% of the time and now all

REX simply sets the weather of the closest METAR station globally. You don’t get moving fronts, isolated storms or any other features that come from a true weather model. As you fly along and come within range of of a new METAR station the weather changes everywhere to match the new METAR.

That’s how good old Active Sky has worked all these years with FS2004-FSX- P3d, hasn’t it?

For those of you who didn't shut down the sim because it's totally useless try this awesome flight and approach into Queenstown NZ:  NO METAR was available--not just in-sim, but in the RW too!  In order to input the descent data into the awesome FBW A320NX I had to open Accuweather and interpret from there for this wonderful RNAV approach:

Only the very early versions of Active Sky worked that way. Later versions would set the weather using themes, where multiple METAR reports were blended. In other words, if Erie, PA was reporting clear sky, but Detroit (140 miles west) was overcast, you would see the weather slowly transition from clear to overcast as you flew towards DTW from ERI

And that is the main reason why I did not yet buy it. For me, based north of the Alps, it is just a total immersion killer to have the same weather theme till the horizon all the time. I mean, also cold or warm fronts are an extremely common weather phenomena all over the world, I really wonder why so many people seem to have no issues with the fact that REX is unable to depict such things. But each to their own...

After stopping and starting Live weather several times, I now have "live weather" - well the temperature has changed from +20c to -34c at Deadhorse, no snow on the ground though !!..

REX Weather Force is NOT my "go to" choice but when flying on VATSIM, it's nice to have this backup available.  Asobo LIVE Wx down ? Simply hit "Clear Skies" and launch REX.  Presto > live weather to fly on VATSIM 👍

Until that too stops after a while, clears all clouds and then needs to be re-injected again.

In any case .. that is what happens to me

What has been working for me on USA east server is loading in with live weather (which doesn't display).  Switching to another set like few clouds.  Then switching back to live weather.  Sometimes takes a few min to load in especially if you're in an area with snow cover.

I've tried this a few times this morning but it hasn't worked for me, unfortunately.

Haha thanks that was the one I recommended here a while back and that is my default reader but as I said the full METAR isn't happening at NZQN:  they better get their act together huh Bob?!

New Zealand only reports METARS on the international WMO METAR feed for the two largest airports: NZAA (Auckland) and NZCH (Christchurch). Only residents of New Zealand, who access the data from a NZ ISP can get free real-time METARS for any other airports within the country.

Any users outside of the country who need NZ METAR data have to pay the government of New Zealand for it.
