They're so advanced in their pursuit of self driving, they are now exhibiting the evolutionary phenomenon of relaxed selection, where once useful traits that are no longer needed recede or disappear: https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2009/09/090908103904.htm

Acording to Sandy Monroe, who strips them down and analyses them in great detail, they aren't built any worse than any other car. They are low down in reliability studies though, and it's said that it's because they are a premium vehicle, and almost all premium vehicles are less reliable, due to all the "latest features" that are included. "Latest features" aren't always the most reliable.

I wouldn't trust carrying my daughter in a car such as this. For its price tag here in europe, i can buy (and did buy) much better, much more reliable. Then I guess Mercedes, BMW and Audi are not premium anymore ? 😄 Quote I wouldn't trust carrying my daughter in a car such as this. No, you can't 🙂 Any equivalent car, with same size/space, same power, same options, and supposedly better build quality, would cost you way more. At least in Europe. In reality, criticizing the cars made by Tesla is just a fashion. That doesn't make the steering wheel problems any less critical. How many cars had the problem ? I have read only two cars had this problem, and it was due to the steering wheel not being attached to the column (missing bolt or something like that)... How could the steering wheel stay in place at all ? It should just fall off as soon as you pull on it, shouldn't it ? Edited March 9, 20233 yr by Daube

Premium vehicle is defined as a luxury vehicle, with all the bells and whistles. Mercedes is obviously regarded as a premium brand, and they are right at the bottom of the reliability rankings. Its not usually steering wheels dropping off, or serious mechanical issues, its the technology, the software, the electronics that has niggles. The more complicated you make a machine, the more to go wrong. Tesla for example, offer cutting edge software innovation, and when you do that you invariably face glitches that aren't typically seen in the automotive space. Those glitches are fixed with over the air updates pretty quickly but obviously it hits the reliability score. Quality control, historically, has been an issue for Tesla, and that has improved but clearly more needs to be done.

In recall a Ford model with electric steering, that had a tendency to fail and lose all steering. But as soon as we get a Tesla with a missing bolt, because some silly mechanic forget to screw it on, the media have a field day. Same for fires, one Tesla catches fire and its all over the media, but they, of course, ignore the fact that 213,000 cars catch fire every year, just in the US, 600 per day! From 2012 to 2021, there was about one Tesla catching on fire for every 210 million miles traveled. For most other vehicles, this is about one fire for every 19 million miles traveled.
