Performance on DX11 vs 12

Featured Replies

I've been using DX12 exclusively for the last 6 months or so.

Before that, it did give me an occasional CTD.  But in the last 6-8 months DX12 has been very stable for me.  Also, DX12 gives me more consistent frames which tends to make things smoother.

For what it is worth if it makes any difference, I am using the Fenix 320 and fly primarily in the US.

Did you try FSUIPC fix ? More information ⬇️

DX12 has been working better than DX11 for me. Tried reverting to 11 just to try it out but had some micro stuttering and lower performance så 12 it is.

I've had very mixed success with DX12 in the past (on my old/modest system) ... but I keep trying it - just in case!

This time around (after SU12) I find I'm pleasantly surprised: so far - no CTDs, glaring artefacts or elevation/tiling problems. Performance appears to be *roughly* the same as DX11 and roughly as smooth (ie.slightl stutters in both DX11 and DX12) - whereas it used to give me a substantial framerate hit.

This all very much "touch wood" - but I'd say there's no harm in trying DX12. Reverting back is easy.

DX12 + FG all the way. Absolutely game changing.

I still wonder why not every user is affected by this annoying terrain tile bug when using DX12. And of course I am utterly mad that I belong to the group of users THAT ARE affected, ruining my otherwise wonderful DX12 experience totally.

DX12 with FG. DX11 is last decade. To the user above who posted they switched back to DX11 as DX12 has higher GPU usage, why?! That’s what you want!

I always set my settings to a level where i'm satisfied with the overall performance/visuals AND the noise levels of my PC to reach that (there are other people in the room beside me). So it's a compromise.
Going DX12 makes the GPU work harder for those same settings and gives therefore also less overhead for more demanding area's of the sim (big airports, certain airplanes, clear vs cloudy weather etc...) which in return creates more noise again. So it's a compromise.
I'm not that kinda person who changes every setting depending on the flight i'm gonna make.
+ i still have to see/experience better performance/visuals with DX12 over DX11 which at the moment i'm not seeing so i don't see any reason to switch.

Have you tried using Disk Clean to delete the DirectX Cache?  Probably worth a try it's part of my ritual when I switch between versions of DX.

Thanks for the suggestion. I didn't even know there was such a thing, but I figured out how to clear it. No discernable difference in performance on DX12. Maybe it has to do with having a modest 8GB VRAM.

^This. There is absolutely nothing more realistic than departing Dallas on Unicom with 2 other aircraft at the airport.

Take-offs are optional, landings are mandatory.
The only time you have too much fuel is when you're on fire.
To make a small fortune in aviation you must start with a large fortune.

There's nothing less important than the runway behind you and the altitude above you.
It's better to be on the ground wishing you were in the air, than in the air wishing you were on the ground.

Well there’s something about Dallas in the bespoke version that is heavier on frames than any other airport they created. So apart from the AI, DFW, with the Fenix always just more strain than JFK or LAX for example.

DX11 plays much nicer with airport scenery, especially the iniBuilds stuff. Not going to get long winded but suffice to say, even on a 4080 card with a 7800x3d at 4k with HDR, DX11 is much better around 3rd party airports then DX12. For that reason, I’ll give up frame gen for now to have a smooth as butter experience with DX11 rather than a stuttering and laggy experience with DX12 at airports.

i have a 3080 12 GB , and considering upgrade to 4080 for the FG , do you think going from 3080 to 4080 is worthwhile ( i have a 5800X3D ) it would be a significant investment and don't want to do it for small gains 😬
