No more live weather thunderstorms?

Featured Replies

I may be mistaken, but I remember seeing small flashes in the world map cloud layer when thunderstorms were too numerous in the early days.

Agree vehemently.  I'm biased of course but it just is just such a strange way of thinking, that a company/developer that pushed the limits of weather simulation and enabled features that users asked

I think you're mistaken about what Active Sky is and focuses on.  We've never focused on graphics/clouds in our weather add-on/engine.  "High quality cloud graphics" is not part of Active Sky, never w

  • As the person who authored the phrase you're quoting, I can assure you that, based on "enhancements" post SU7, weather is absolutely lacking. I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks like that. And, w

All these thunderstorms going on right now, and I can't see a single bolt of lightning in MSFS. Anyone having luck?

Yes!  Flying into KSTL yesterday around 8:00am I kept seeing white flashes in the cumulus clouds surrounding me. Thinking “lightning?”  I turned the sims time into O’Dark Thirty and poof…lightning everywhere!

I fly every day, and haven't seen lightning in well over a year, maybe longer.

Ditto for me. I too fly all the time and have not seen any lightning until yesterday at KSTL.

Try the Caribbean, I'm seeing lightning there all the time.

I haven't seen lightning in probably a year but flying out of Memphis (KMEM) this afternoon, there it was.  Took me a second to realize it since it's been so long!  Perhaps a server-side change has been done?

Flew through Florida today with lightning everywhere, just not in the sim!! I havent seen lighting since I got into MSFS back in October 2022.

I highly doubt any server side changes, lightning is just very sporadic in this Sim. If we start to see it in every storm planet wide then yeah somethings changed, but it simply isn't this way at all. It's one of those (many) items that I fear we won't see improvement now until we get our hands on MSFS2024, a shame when storms were great pre-SU7.

Footage of lightning (and thunder) in the caribbean (TFFJ) from some fair weather clouds, posted in the MS Forums. At 1:15 the sun is showing through this whispy vapor storm. Clearly something to adress for a new simulator.

Experienced a thunderstorm yesterday afternoon sitting at KESN, Easton, Maryland, USA.  Matched weather outside.  Saw lightening several times.  This was the first thunderstorm I have seen in MSFS 2020 in likely 18 months.  Previous experience back then was horrible, was way over done!

Saw some flying over the South China Sea right now, but I still haven't encountered any when going to airports with thunderstorm mentioned in their METAR.

Wow , surprise , surprise, just took off from MYNN in the Bahamas, and I saw heat lightning. First time I saw lightning in about a year and a half.

I remember a stat from many years ago that at any one time there are 2,200 thunderstorms in the world.

Is there any way to search for them in MSFS. There is in Active Sky of course but that’s for another sim.

Would this help?
