Why I quit buying more MSFS addons and hardware.

Waiting to see what is and what is not going to be compatible with FS2024. And what the performance will be in that sim.

When the trailer dropped for 2024 they made mention that practically everything for 2020 will be compatible with 2024.

I assume for certain add-ons there would likely be some tinkering involved to port them across (planes and airports specifically).

Pretty sure PMDG said right away that their fleet would be compatible or at least made to be compatible.

But you're right - performance of the new sim will be key.

I was also about to buy an external GPS device which works to tune the Garmin in MSFS2020. It might also work well in 2024. I'm going to wait.

Just keep in mind that holding off means developers aren't getting paid, and if enough people decide to hold off despite reassurances that 2024 will be backwards compatible with 2020, they might close their doors before you can buy it for 2024.

I am not even thinking about the 2024 version. There are plenty of airports that I want, and I intend to get them as soon as I can!

I’m not even sure I’m buying 2024. And almost certain I’m not going to be an early adopter. I’ll be using 2020 for at least another 12 to 18 months and perhaps a lot longer if the new platform is as plagued with issues as 2020 was for the first 2 years. I’m not going to be a beta tester again.

No problem with that at all. I'm also holding off on a GPU upgrade because the promised optimizations might make my current setup work well with the new sim. As for addons? I think I bought the most since 2024 was announced lol. If they say virtually everything will be compatible, I won't worry about it.

Might has well keep supporting developers. Lets face it when 2024 releases you could be waiting for a while just to download it because the servers can't handle everyone and what ever is broken and needs porting over which can take a bit of time.

These developers are like small mom and pop shops in your local town. They depend on patrons to support them to feed their families and stay in business. To quit buying from them is not a good idea. You are worrying over nothing.

Asobo has said all addons will be compatible. Even most developers said that they will not charge for their addons to be updated to 2024. You guys, this is not going to be some giant new sim that is started over from scratch. 2024 will literally be the same sim/game as 2020 just with added features and improvements. Just like P3D did with versions 1 though 6. All the same sim/game, charged for each and every one of them for the new features. Sure, some addons needed to be tweaked with a patch, but ya know what, they all worked just fine, most within days.

You are safe to continue buying and using addons all the way up until the release of version 2024. And you can still use 2020 for as long as you want. Enjoy what you have in front of you and cross the 2024 bridge when it comes. Quite possibly still 7-9 months away.

Is it done yet? When will it be released? Will it be freeware or payware? How much will it cost? Any updates on the progress? Will it work for Xbox? Can I be a beta tester? How's the performance in VR?

From the thread title, I was expecting a detailed essay 😄  Turned out the title was longer than the OP.

There's always something we can come up with to worry about.  This one wouldn't be one I'd personally bother worrying about.  We have no idea when FS2024 will drop. They say 2024 but it's not outside the realms of possibility that it gets delayed into 2025 (with a name change of course).... what then?   Buying no addons for the next year??

Also, it will probably take 3rd party devs some time to get to grips with the native FS2024 SDK.  There could be few native FS2024 addons for the first 6 months or so.   MSFS2020 content may be the main stay of what we're still using in the initial months of FS2024.

As others have said, MS have said content will be backwards compatible with MSFS. Just buy what takes your interest and don't buy what doesn't.

Sounds like FS2024 will be a late Q4 release in any case so there's nine months more of 2020 which means I'll still be buying stuff and, even if the purchases turn out not to be compatible, there's plenty of time to get value from them.

In terms of software addons, I'm not particularly worried. Tbh I doubt I'll even get 2024 until the rest of you beta test it for me! The new career mode looks cool, but I would bet my left nut that you'll have to use default planes for it. Some of those might be good though (like the Vision Jet).

This is exactly what i am thinking. 2024 will most likely need 6 to 12 months to sort out after release, so i am in no rush to jump on that wagon.

Don't most of these modules state compatibility wit both MSFS and XPlane?, if they can work with sims from 2  different companies with different coding I don't see that compatibility with MS's latest version will be a problem and of course there is always FSUIPC to lend a hand
