WU18 Release today

Glad it is separate, Bern-Belp and Salzburg Airport self installed with scenery.

I think there's a bit of misunderstanding here. EDDM - just as Bern-Belp and Salzburg - was installed as part of the WU package. What @Farlis probably meant was that EDDM is indeed a separate part of the WU like the 2 others you mentioned. So do what Farlis wrote to get rid of the WU EDDM.

Cheers, Søren Dissing

As promised here are my comparison videos, all in 4K resolution:   1.) Gaya Munich vs Simwings Munich:   2.) Asobo Gaya Bern vs Orbx Bern   3a RD

  • Downloading. Can't see the release notes though. Seems they linked WU17 in the announcement https://forums.flightsimulator.com/t/release-world-update-xviii-germany-austria-and-switzerland-now-availabl

All of them are seperate, even LOWS and LSZB. You just have to go into the content manager and deinstall them from the world update folder if you don't want them

Microsoft always does it like this in their World Updates. The package is always subdived in between POI, Airports, TIN Cities and Missions, all of which can be seperately selected and deselected.

The only thing that you can't get rid of is the DEM and the updated satelite imagery, should there be any. But these are cloud based anyway.

Which Munich is better? As well as Salzburg (compared to the Digital Design one)?

The SimWings version has the recent Terminal 1 extension, which the Asobo / Gaya version doesn't. I haven't compared them visually yet, but to me a current ground layout is kind of the decider anyway.

I am not very impressed with the hand crafted version of EDDM Munich. I appreciate that this will not be quite as detailed as a full payware version, but the place looks like a hollowed out shell! Any interior areas are totally empty (which makes me wonder why they have been modelled as interiors in the first place), and what looks like a huge multi level car park is about as bare bones as I have ever seen one. In addition, there are sections of road flyovers that are blocks raised several feet above the connecting roads. What is that all about??

This is a good example of why I think that creating hand crafted versions of very large airports is a bad idea. Too much work is required to "fill in" the place with detail. Smaller airports like LSZB Bern are a much better target for hand crafted airports in world updates, and that is where I am heading right now....

I quite agree. I understand that Microsoft wants to cater for the average simmer who doesn't buy (many) addon airports but it is a shame they spend time on developing airports that are available already.
With the previous WU I had All airports already purchased from third parties. With this one, only 2 out of 3 I already have.

Disabling them again isn't the issue; figuring out which one to keep is...

Flightsim rig:
CPU: AMD 5900x  | Mobo: MSI X570 MEG Unify | RAM: 32GB G.Skill Trident Z Neo | GPU: Gigabyte RTX 3090 | Storage: M.2 (2 & 4 TB) | PSU: Corsair RM850x | Case: Fractal Define 7 XL
Display: Acer Predator x34 3440x1440 | Speakers: Logitech Z906
Controllers: Fulcrum One Yoke | MFG Crosswind v2 pedals | Honeycomb Bravo Quadrant |Thrustmaster TCA Quadrant | Stream Deck XL & Plus | TrackIR 5 Tobii eye tracking

I am not going to fly into EDDM enough to justify a paid update, so the WU one is fine for me.

Any opinions of the included version of LOWS?  I just bought the payware version in the last sale, d’oh!

Current System (Running at 4k): ASUS ROG STRIX X670E-F, Ryzen 7800X3D, RTX 5090, 55" Samsung Q80T, 64GB DDR5 6000 RAM, EVGA CLC 280mm AIO Cooler, Brunner CLS-E NG Yoke, Thrustmaster Warthog HOTAS & Stick, Thrustmaster TCA Quadrant & Add-on, VirtualFly Ruddo+, TQ6+ and Yoko+, GoFlight MCP-PRO and EFIS, Skalarki FCU and MCDU

Quick flight from Bern over to somewhere random in the East, not long only 25mins or so in a GA, the terrain certainly looks decent where I was, not sure if it was 1m DEM but in places it looked pretty close (will fly in Austria next time).

Pico Neo3 Link VR - Windows 11 64bit, Gigabyte Z590 Aorus Elite Mobo, i7-10700KF CPU, Gigabyte RX 9070 XT OC 16gb (AMD GPU), 32gig Corsair 3600mhz RAM, SSD x2 + M.2 SSD 1tb x1

Saitek X45 HOTAS - Saitek Pro Rudder Pedals - Logitech Flight Yoke - Homemade 3 Button & 8-directional Joystick Box, SNES Controller (used as a Button Box - Additional USB Numpad (used as a Button Box)

Switzerland's DEM hasn't changed since the the first world update that covered it, they already have the best data.

According to the last Dev Q&A, Gaya was making this Munich as a payware release, but Microsoft (Jorg) asked if they could use it for the world update instead.

The new EDDM was very much a seperate install. Just type in EDDM in your Content Manager and deinstall the Microsoft one.

Not for me.

I have simwings version and I searched EDDM in content manager. It found two versions, one simwings and the other part of WU XVIII. However, when I uninstalled EDDM as part of the WUXVIII, it uninstalled the entire world update.

Just downloading the 11.83GB WU again!

Looks like I'll have to delete the simwings version

Were the colours and photogrammetry ok around Bern? I just did a very short test, colours washed out like crazy and photogrammetry tree blobs all over. Not even close to what was shown in the trailer.

Release Notes say different;

Most of Austria, and parts of Germany and Switzerland feature new digital elevation modelling with resolution as great as one meter

Might be a mistake in the notes, because the DEM comparison map they showed in Q&A did not show any differences in Switzerland.

They also didn't mention Switzerland DEM at all, just Germany.

I didn't really see, it was quite a turbulent ride so I was concentrating on not falling out the sky 😄 didn't get a chance to look around until it settled down a bit by which time I was well away from Bern.
