I don't understand why a 5000 series video card will see a significate difference in performance over what you have already.

Now I need FG to get 50-60 fps (I limit the framerate at 60 to have less noise), the 5090 would give me that without FG.

Here's a simple route KJFK 4L take off landing (winds good today!). 142nm round trip.

Flies around city so should be good demanding views for the sim. No SID/STAR for simplicity.  ILS 4L final no transition.

Now this got me stumped.
Loaded MSFS2024, opened EFB, entered the given flight plan, send it to ATC (otherwise it would not let me access the yellow start flight button on the bottom right), scenery and airplane loaded but while doing so I noticed quite a bit of hiccups.
Entering the plane and it was a complete stutter fest. FPS down to 2 !!! and no intention to go up. Almost impossible to look around. Not flyable.
Quit and started over.
Same thing.... wth?
Quit to desktop, reran 2024, same procedure, same result.
Quit flight, loaded up airplane in my home airport, everything smooth. 40 FPS (capped), no hiccups.
Quit, reloaded the previous flight plan, sim teleported me back to KJFK, same story. 2 FPS!!! Not possible to fly.
Thought it might had to do with streaming the NY area since I had not been there in 2024 although runway and scenery seemed to look OK.
Did let it "load/stream" for a while, FPS still at 2, no progress.
Quit again, this time no flight plan, just selected runway 04L on KJFK and started.... guess what...40 FPS, smooth (just small 2 hiccups on take-off). Flew around a bit then quit.
Loaded the flight plan back into the EFB, send it to ATC again, same problem again, 2 FPS max. FPS just tanks when I use this flight plan and send it to ATC.
Quit again, loaded a flight plan from my home airport, send it to ATC, no problem, 40 FPS.

I think so too. I'll try the same flight without FSHud.

I repeated the flight, first without FSHud. On arrival to Vienna, I started FSHud. No crazy RAM issues. Hence not sure what happened with the crazy high RAM usage before.

That's VERY interesting! This MAY not be related but I THINK the sim MIGHT not like an FP without SID/STARS? Or at least a SID. May be totally irrelevant but I made the mistake of selecting the default neo yesterday. Decided to fly had route with NO SID but relevant waypoint on track. Plane absolutely refused to initialise whatever I did. I ended up having to take off and fly direct to WP then after that it calculated vnav and fuel etc.

Probably unrelated.

I will post a full plan next with SID/STARs but it will be a lot longer flight lol.

I tried this as my smaller airports are unrealistically teaming with traffic but does this not also reduce the quality of the airport traffic though - as quality and volume seem to be tied to the same slider?

Yes, it would appear so....

I find this extremely annoying as I'd rather have fewer AC, less traffic jams on taxiways, and better FPS, but keep higher quality models.

What I don't get, is why from 2020-2024, the ram requirement ( suggested )goes up to 64 GB. Most games recommend 16-32 gb.

And the Xbox which this game was programed to run well on only has 8GB of system RAM.....!

I get that a PC uses a little more RAM to run an OS in the background but the difference is Huge!

Well, technically it shouldn't use more RAM than what's available.

With 2024 I get superior performance in every category.

The most important category imho is immersion.

This works although there were some (short) FPS drops on take-off. But constant 40 FPS for the rest.

Didn't fly the entire route because all through the day 2024 is trowing different changes at me beyond belief. I got fed up eventually and called it a day.
Last 3 weeks were just fine but for some reason today 2024 behaved jerky.

- Started off with a very twitchy rudder only to find that my rudder profile that I made since the beginning was replaced by the default one. Mine wasn't even in the list anymore. And at the same time there was no curve set anymore hence it being twitchy all of a sudden. Had to redo the profile.
- Normally I use Live Weather but today I switched to preset clear skies but 2024 decided to play a bit with me and switch it back to live weather now and then and then when I did set it back to live, it just kept clear skies preset. So annoying.
- When i pressed ESC on a certain flight to quit I saw the blue nav aids (boxes and route lines) on the quit screen. And yes, on the next flight they were present off course. I had no idea how to get rid of them so looked up on the Internet and found a binding called: Toggle Visual Assistance Display. However, it wasn't bonded to anything, no keyboard, no mouse, no controller but still 2024 decided to show them. Added a keyboard combo to get rid of them which worked fine but on the last flight they all of a sudden just popped up again in the middle of the flight without me even touching keyboard or controller.

So I just called quits for today.

It's a long boring flight in imc like today. I ran full flight in 2020 which was very smooth but does that even count when there's nothing but cotton wool to render lol?

I was tempted to go clear sky as I'm getting fed up with not seeing anything but runways send taxiways the whole flight but I had some good vfr testing in Argentina earlier so meh.

That stuff you mention would drive me nuts. I hated the blue stuff in the ac in 2020 and thankfully it's gone for good but seeing it in the skies... Heck no!

On my end since FS24 got released I have almost doubled the fps in FS20 on ULTRA settings. Whereas in FS24 it's like the old FS20 it is between 22-35 fps on ULTRA. Though the lower end only on heavy airport as Pryguee EGPH with the Fenix.  Otherwise rather on the 30 fps mark +-

I'm going to assume that everyone is comparing apples to apples.

The first thing I noticed when I tried MSFS 2024 was how bad the performance was without add-ons compared to my fully loaded MSFS 2020. Plus, the clouds looked awful, the ground textures were blurry, and the night lighting horrid. IMO, it's highly unlikely that the sim will ever run anywhere near as good as 2020 does on my system. If you have the system, congrats! Enjoy your VFR simulator.

I didn't answer yet.  In 2024 you get better visuals for similar settings.  So I guess I'd get about the same performance but better visuals?

Agree. Despite streaming, the increase in quality of eye candy, all with slightly increased overall performance, there are so many enhancements to 2020 that just do not work yet for 2024.  Those addons are coming along one at a time, but at a slow teasing pace.  Indicates perhaps a rush to market, stampeding over end users and cooperative 3rd party developers, some who are now even official partners.

Lessons not learned from 2020 rollout four years ago.

I ended up voting worse. There are a lot of times I get better performance than 2020, but the times I get bad performance it is a lot worse than 2020.

Like I said earlier, I blame a lot of this on 3rd party airports (Hello, BMWorld). In those cases where it was a little rough in 2020 it's a lot rougher in 2024.

Even with some airports. I have some I've bought that have literally never been updated. It kinda is like starting over.
