What MSFS 2024 got wrong

Don’t worry, I think we all know where you stand😅

I still stand firmly behind Asobo as I mentioned in my own post I think they saved flightsim and re-exposed it to the masses as I said.  We as simmers all NEED them to get this right in the long run or it would be catastrophic to the hobby.  I am no different than anyone else in that respect.

I also think they really got this wrong in numerous ways and came to a post about what they got "wrong" to express it.  At least I am not in the what they got "right" thread complaining, it could be worse 😉

  • Their mistake was releasing a Alpha State program, that they knew was faulty, because they wanted the cash flow. period.

That is not my experience with 2024..  It does take advantage of modern multi-core CPUs and powerful GPUs.   Better than 2020 on my system. 🙂

  • I think MSFS 2024 is a stunning sim. Sure, there are bugs, but, overall, it's a very satisfying experience. I kind of feel sorry for all the folks who are only fixated on the negative.

Come on over! As you’ve probably noticed, things are a bit more balanced now. You can bring your Steam stats if you like 👍🏻

I expect like a lot of people I will be there sooner than later once certain aspects mature, certain LVARS and add-ons are supported and overall consistency improves.  There are a lot of good reasons to evolve to the next iteration and I have also repeatedly said I think it will take 24 FAR less time to get to parity than it took 2020 to become what it is today.

I'd be surprised if by summer or fall I was still in 2020!

The bigger problem is the potential lost revenue because of the.launch, marketplace issues and how many of those users will come back vs try it once and throw it in a bin and on to the next thing when it didn't work.

Like I said, had they got the launch right I think the peak number would have easily smashed 2020 and surpassed 100,000.

It sucks it went so sideways and we are even having these discussions... I'm certainly opinionated but also very open to discourse and balanced conversation.

It is just so frustrating. Today, I tried 2024 again this week just to find half of mouse, keyboard and honeycomb setup disappeared. Looked at all the profiles to no avail.

Hah! Just read the control assignments manual !! All is explained !!

I'll just read out the relevant parts to you! Hmmm, now where did I lay that manual... I'm sure there is one included.... this is embarrassing for me... now where is that manual... erm is almost seems like there is no manual, but that can't be...

When the 2024 sim is working it is great - but at least one out of every three sessions is a screaming disaster of one kind or another.

That's really strange because for me, I have yet to have a bad load of the 2024 sim after about 10-15 flights.   I'm taking it very cautiously and slowly, but so far, so good.  Loads by the deer every time (if you've loaded 2024, you know what I'm referring to there).  I've been moving over one thing at a time to test.  Also despite what you hear in threads like this, I have yet to find a stutter in MSFS2024 (!) and I have been truly surprised by that.  I guess I need to load in more things?  Who knows.

I do stand by the rest of my post however that was a considerable oversight and mistake on my part LOL.  Yes, I should have recognized that.

Only the flight gamers are going over to 2024. They know who they are. (Most are sitting on the couch with their Xbox controllers)

First I would strongly disagree and second are you so short-sighted that you are disparaging the very group that made 2020 so successful in the console market it paved the way for 2024?

That's like shooting off your toes to spite your foot....

We need those "flight gamers"

It’s true!!!  I’ve spent most of this evening walking around the rim of what remains of Mount St. Helens.

Amazing!

Edit;

I should add; from the comfort of my sofa using a wireless Xbox controller with TLOD turned right up. This walking business is an unexpected bonus.

I might try Mt. Erebus tomorrow if I can figure out how to crash land there🤪

Gripping their xbox controller tight.  Exit light.  Enter night.  Take my hand, off to never never land.

I currently only fly the Vision Jet - both the default and the payware version - as well as the Carenado Pilatus PC-24

The Vision Jet(s) works well; the Carenado PC-24 has some "quirks" and functions that simply don't work.

Doesn't stop me from enjoying the sim.

And I don't have a "rocket ship" PC-system either.

As I've said before, how you approach MSFS 2024 is largely a matter of attitude: some are able to move on to parts of the sim that work, others are stuck in a rut, paralyzed, only focusing on the things that don't work.

Yeah, I think in a few months I will attempt to merge back over but these last few weeks have been too rough.

Just like with all your other highly nuanced and intelligent predictions and takes, we will have to take this one to the bank too... We aren't worthy of such wisdom and sageliness!

The biggest mistake is turning flight sim architecture into a streaming app and therefore waiting at the terminal for the sim to download!  Shame on Msobo!

Not sure I understand. If YouTube and Netflix can stream a GAZILLION videos I don't understand why it can't be done for MSFS.

Hardware: i7-8700k, GTX 1070-ti, 32GB ram, NVMe/SSD drives with lots of free space.
Software: latest Windows 10 Pro, P3Dv4.5+, FSX Steam, and lots of addons (100+ mostly Orbx stuff).

It can, but it's a lot more resource intensive. Even if you watch a 4k movie on Netflix, that's just a 4k pre-rendered movie. It has roughly the same amount of server load and bandwidth regardless of what's going on on the screen (yes I know about same-pixel compression but for purposes of this, that's fairly irrelevant). You could pull that off with a 25mbps DSL line and relatively minimal horsepower-per-user on Netflix's end.

MSFS has no idea which way you're going to turn the plane, or your head, so it has to be ready to render a 360 degree bubble of visual information, plus process the flight physics, clouds, winds, other airplanes, ground/sea vehicles, etc etc etc. It's doing a *lot* more work than Netflix does to send you a movie, and it has to do it in real time. If Netflix is having a bad day it might take an extra 10 seconds to buffer the video before it starts, and you won't care. If MSFS takes an extra 10 *miliseconds* to recognize and respond to your control input, you'll get justifiably furious.
