trees ruining experience

Featured Replies

Too many trees in my neck of the woods as well.  Also, not the correct ones.  Way too many pines and not enough hardwoods.

I9-9900, 32 GB RAM, RTX 3090 FTW

  • Since Asobo dumped Blackshark the AI autogen is far worse than MSFS

For me it's trees on cliff tops, trees on beaches but most of all, trees on the approach to runways - aaargh, just no!

The only other solution is for Asobo (or whatever team in MS creates World Updates) is to do it themselves, that or the AI placement technology they use needs to be refined.

Yes it will take Bijan or anyone else years to "clean up" trees where they shouldn't be, so all you can do at this time as already advised is send a request directly to him.

I can understand and respect what you say.

My main issue is I was actually very satisfied with trees in FS2020. We had one quick fix to reduce the height and that was it; Density and placement was fairly ok there.

We all love both products: 2020 and 2024. It is just a big pity the trees are not the best in FS2024. But I still enjoy flying it.

They may not be the best but are certainly much better than the MSFS 2020 trees.

My trees are a lumpy mess. I will soon load a screenshot, for example, from KLOM in PA, where the trees near the runway are big brown blobs. It really bothers me when everything else is so well done. I've tried lots of stuff to change them to no avail. any ideas appreciated. I could turn of PG but that's like reverting to FSX or XP IMO.

For me 2024 autogenerated trees are better quality than in 2020 but it the same mess  it was in 2020. Trees have to be hand tailored per geographic area. AI still can't manage placement correctly. Other than problem described above, there are still a lot of "stone trees" or ones that AI recognizes as structures.

The autogen and terrain scenery in MSFS 2020 (I do not have MSFS 2024) is light years beyond that in P3D or FSX. I do not use PG at all because I consider it to be flawed, but I am more than happy with the generally impressive autogen.

Noob question but can't you just turn trees off completely for any flight region where there shouldn't be any?

Surely there's a line of code somewhere you can comment out or toggle with a batch file? Or a slider?

Interesting observation, and let me add a couple of thoughts. My level of satisfaction with autogen depends on how familiar I am with the real-world location -- if it's a city I know well (e.g. NYC, LA, Pittsburgh, Chicago, Boston), autogen just doesn't make the cut, and photogrammetry to me is far superior despite its problems at or near ground level. But for places I am unfamiliar with, the autogen is just fine -- not knowing what the actual buildings look like, there is no immersion issue for me. So Ulan Bator and Asuncion look great in autogen!

Secondly, the autogen in MS2024 seems generally superior to that in MS2020. For one thing, there is more variety -- for example, fewer areas of multiple cookie-cutter identical buildings. And the much-improved ground level terrain in MS2024 helps to make most areas look more realistic on the ground than in MS2020. As noted in your first sentence, both sims are way ahead of everybody else scenery-wise as far as I'm concerned.

I just want to mention this: As I'm currently testing the latest AutoFPS builds, where it is possible to change various parameters "on the fly", including tree quality. Tree quality ultra vs low has a massive impact on performance. With it set to low, the trees are not going to look great - but it might be something to consider when flying into a huge airport in an airliner (where tree quality probably matters less).

The photogrammetry trees are another subject - they will look bad no matter what. Nothing can be done about this except turning PG off.

Glad to hear it's not just me. Is there a solution to the trees in the offing?

I agree. I visited the places where the trees are globs in ms24 and they look fine in 2020. it's a conundrum.

Excuse my ignorance...is there a way to switch from PG to autogen without having to restart the sim in MS24? I wasn't able to do it I think.

It's something we've been saying since day 1, trees take out and PG glitches totally take out the immersion, that's why I say I don't see that supposed graphical superiority anywhere. It's not that they are poorly placed it's also the disproportionate size and alien shapes.

Where I live is a practically semi-desert climate which is the province of Alicante in Spain, even with Bijan looks like Jumanji, at the moment for VFR I still prefer the other simulator to fly areas where I know, I would like to see an addon like global forest 2 in MFS that without being perfect places much better much better the placement of trees.
