Setting Max Frame Rate

Featured Replies

I am wondering what the general opinion of the best place to set your max frame rate. Setting it in the sim is the easiest but I thought I had read a while back that it does not always adhere to the setting. Then there's the GPU itself. Or even MSI Afterburner.

But which should be avoided and what is best to use?

Thanks .....

I just use the sim's FPS. Keep it around 33, FG takes up further to 66 and I max my monitor to 70hz. I use autofps to 65 (expert settings checked, 45tlod min, 250 max) and use dynamic settings along side at 65.

Smooth everywhere. KJFK, traffic, raas, gsx, batc traffic set to 7 all around in the fenix.

My max framerate is set at 60 in the NCP, so there is really nothing to be gained from setting in in the sim from what I can tell.  I have run with it set to 60 and not set at all and can discern no difference whatsoever.  I guess it may be useful if you don't set max FPS in your graphics software.

Personally I have the best experience by using the frame limiter set in the usercfg.opt, not setting the limit inside the menues. Dont ask me why, but I get rock-stable FPS like this, neither the ingame limit nor any outside limit produces equally good results on my machine (tested both RTSS FPS limit and nVIDIA Control Panel FPS limit)

In 2024 I set it to 30 in the UI. I never tried in UserCfg.opt. In 2020 I set RTSS to 30 FPS, Front Edge Sync. I also apply adaptative FG in Lossless Scaling to 90 Hz. Reason: 60 is not that smooth in my monitor, and 120 leaves me almost no GPU headroom for driving the Fenix displays while using DLDSR 1.78x. I get a beautiful experience with these settings.

Lossless Scaling for all my sims. What a godsend...

I used to use NCP cap but for some reason it gave me microstutters in the last couple of days. Switched to Riva Tuner and all is smooth again. Not quite sure to be honest what the issue is.

I believe this should be set to the native frame rate, not the generate frame rate so outlined in the AutoFPS documentation. Though if it works for you then 😛

I don't personally set a max FPS as I didn't see the need to, but if there's some benefit to doing so then I will.

I used Riva Tunner but since SU4 I started using the Graphics settings limits within the sim, setting mine to 30, and opted for Adaptive too.

I open "UserCfg.opt" and see the line with the frame rate limit set to 30, which I used to edit and set myself before using Riva Tunner.

I believe that with SU4 I no longer experience the stutters I used to when setting the FPS through the sim Graphics menu.

So far so good.

I don't use FG, just TAA for anmtialiasing.

First option is within the Sim (set to 40fps). Then i use my gpu driver based framegen to double it automatically

If that option is not available (or bugged) then within the GPU driver settings. and double with the driver based framegen

A very long time ago i used to use Rivatuner for this but now no need.

My Anti aliasing is TAA. i dislike the look of any other method.

I set mine to 40, ensures I have NO blurry textures … which also happens to be within my VRR range.

EDIT: I don’t use DLSS/frame gen etc … straight TAA=200 and everything else on ultra and/or highest settings.

Correction - I am running it at 30 on 2X FGR which gives me 60 FPS in the sim.  I would confirm though that whatever setting I use, seems to make no difference.

RTSS front edge sync w/ its ability to assign not only a key combination to toggle a frame rate lock on and off, but also to increase or decrease the rate lock WHILE FLYING.  I use this fabulous technology to offset visual strobe/flicker that can happen with NV DLSS FG while on the ground in types of tarmac textures prone to manifest this.  Turns out having the rate locked generates the worse strobe/flicker--these are fixed-interval oscillations (low FTV from RTSS front edge sync) so only accentuates this.   While on the ground I hit a key to run wide open, and once in the air hit it again to put the lock back on at 60FPS-fg and watch temps and fans go down.  Sometimes these strobe/flicker visual aberrations can be seen after TO so will leave it unlocked a while longer.  Many airport tarmacs don't require this but it's nice to have when they do.

It depends on your screen’s refresh rate and the number of frame generations you want.

Without frame generation or DLSS, you’re getting pure graphics, which is hard to achieve unless you have a 4090 or 5090. In this case, set your Max FPS to match your screen’s refresh rate (for example, a 160 Hz screen → Max FPS ≈ 160).

Frame generation can provide smoother and faster performance, but glitches may occur when running certain engines. This is normal because it requires double GPU processing.

For setting up a maximum frame rate when using frame generation, for example:

  • 160 Hz / 2× frame generation = 80 FPS

  • 160 Hz / 3× frame generation = 50 FPS

Do not set the max frame rate higher than this calculation, or you may experience dropped frames, especially during takeoff or landing.

Set the AUTO FPS to a maximum of 50 FPS.
