Sim Update 7 Beta is available

Just to be clear about this specific issue - On my copy of MSFS 2024 when I crash into the ground, the sim DOES NOT display a black screen and end the flight - it instead triggers the Back on Track mode flinging the plane back into a random position and state in the sky.
I have tried every assistance setting the menu and I have not found a way to turn it off.

My apologies, I was going off of memory as I was fairly certain this was working just like 2020 as I previously had crash detection enabled in 2024, but I just tested now and it indeed puts you back in the air. Looks like there was an old feature request related to this on the official forums that was closed due to not enough upvotes. Now that I think of it, I think I was stuck in a loop when I had the window of the CAS Cub open and that is when I disabled crash detection.

That said, I don't think this was done intentionally to dumb down the sim. The description for crash detection mentions the flight will end after a crash, so this is likely a bug related to how crashes during career mode will put you back on track instead of ending the mission. The feature request may have gotten some traction if the topic was created as a bug stating crash detection doesn't work as described in free flight.

Let me see if I’ve got this right: MS/Asobo have delivered a flight sim that single-handedly destroyed the previous Serious Simmers flight sim in a matter of months. The global scenery is so good that

Well - let's face it, the SU7 with the METAR update happened because a very small but extremley loud VATSIM minority were crying their eyes out because FS2020 METARs didn't completely match real-world

I'm thinking the current problem is either a bug they haven't quite figured out a good fix for, or they haven't figured out how to properly scale the visual fidelity and LOD processing/curves across various hardware capabilities (hence the more aggressive LOD processing in order to cater to the lowest common denominator for now). My hunch is that it's the latter, but hoping it's the former so it can be fixed soon.

No one seems to correlate that prior to these LOD complaints, everyone was complaining about stuttering on short final. I am not a dev, but I would guess (and I vaguely remember Asobo mentioning) that prior to the update that introduced the landing gear culling, a lot of objects didn't have LOD's assigned and that tanked the performance of the sim when all those objects had to load at once during short final. The LOD of the landing gear is probably tied to the same LOD of other small objects that most people do not care about seeing from hundreds of feet away.

Hopefully Asobo introduces additional LOD sliders so people can crank these settings if their hardware allows. What doesn't make sense to me is completely redesigning the LOD system just to pacify a handful of people who get triggered by not seeing a landing gear of a plane across the tarmac.

The 2020 LOD system definitely wasn't the way to go, since devs abused it by setting large LOD's for small objects to ensure they appeared at distance, and that is a great way to get unpredictable performance issues. This is why I don't use any 2020 airports or scenery in 2024...

Guys the Terrain enhancement mod reduces the awful detail culling significantly, and you can use default MSFS maps now. Play a few notches above default and medium and I've got the sim looking perfect again. (It just highlights how blurry the base game is now, pathetic).

I've got crisp, perfect looking terrain and good frames. (If you go too high it does impact)

Where do you get that mod?

The "MSFS Map Enhancement"?

I tried that but it doesnt work as well as it did in 2020 due to the downgraded 256x256 texture tiles

Have another go. There is a fidelity slider, and it really does make things sharper (to the extent that I'm angry it's not the base game). Use the default maps. I'm the first one to complain about texture resolution and my recent flights have been astonishing.

I have never suffered from stutters on final approach. I have also had the "disappearing AI landing gear" in both MSFS 2024 and MSFS 2020. It is not something that has just magically appeared overnight.

This comment triggers me a little, I was off work for 5 days while Rolls Royce got their health and safety complient with UK law. Those workers who were classed as essential workers like myself, were worked so hard, as we had to keep the freight aircraft flying.

Please don't be triggered, you were lucky to have the work, I'm freelance and didn't work for 9 months, I got sweet FA from the government and had to take a bounce back loan which I'm still paying off

I know people say what they say because that was their experience, but to make matters worse. Later on when Rolls Royce were struggling, RR asked for help from the employee's to take off two weeks for all employees, however those who weren't Furloughed during covid would be unpaid for the two weeks off work, which was only about 10% of the UK RR workforce, while the other staff that had been sitting at home, got paid in full.

Obviously because we were in the minority, it sailed in through a ballot of the workforce.

The problem is with Asobo and not getting the point, I am pretty sure. Remember how long it took them to really UNDERSTAND the issue with the snow coverage? It was discussed in two or three Q&A sessions (at least) and you could see that Seb and Martial were puzzled by the fact that it was STILL an issue, after all the "fixes" they implemented. They simply did not get the point, they thought that people were complaining about snow depth and frozen waters, but the actual issue is that we get snow in a valley even if it is 30°C since weeks simply because the resolution of the snow coverage provided by meteoblue is too low. They still did not get that one entirely, at least some improvements were made.

And now? They for sure again think of something else. Because there was even once the statement that default AI planes do not suffer from this (which was total nonsense) and I am sure they stopped looking at it. Even AIG and FSLTL devs spent hours to fix it on their side because it COULD have been an issue with their models. It is NOT.

So whoever can still post questions for the next Q&A session, please, please add this on the list. @SeedyL maybe? It is ruining the immersion on big hubs with AI traffic like nothing else. Now we even get DLSS5 in the sim, the picture looks almost photoreal, but then you see a plane floating around some 50m away because the landing gear is culled away...

And regarding the console discussion: I doubt, I really doubt that adding those landing gears to the ai planes further away would cripple performance. It is such a small thing, it cant be that hard on performance. All those trees e.g. are way more load on the performance and they are properly shown in distance even on a Xbox S. So this argument is non valid as well.

And as Christopher said: back in FSX it was no issue. So they cant tell me that in a sim from 2006 it was no issue and 20y later, it is suddenly something inevitable due to performance reasons? Never ever...

YESS, this is the one thing that makes me mad the most with this sim.

I can imagine a controller on vatsim asking someone to report traffic in sight. Well, it's impossible because the game doesn't even render aircraft out that far.

Which is, not surprisingly, just some hours later proven by the last Dev Live Stream... "Disappearing landing gear on AI aircraft is generally caused by the individual aircraft’s LOD configuration and should be reported per aircraft."

They simply do not get it... NO it is NOT caues by the individual aicrafts LOD configuration. Geez, how many times this need to be repeated over and over again until their stubborn approach to this issue is overwhelmed? @SeedyL we absolutely need your support here. We had once a short discussion about things being said or not, but as you can see in this Dev Live Stream it is pretty obvious that Asobo thinks the issue is not on their side. BUT IT IS for gods sake. What does it need that this is finally addressed? I seriously will loose my temper soon, how can one be so word not allowed, stubborn and obviously wrong even if you are told a million times that it IS NOT how you think? Really...

Or another approach for us customers? We report every single AI plane with the issue via Zendesk? Means all default AI planes, all FSLTL AI planes and all AIG AI planes? Maybe a whopping list of about 500 AI planes being reported "per aircraft" via Zendesk will finally ring a bell over there? Sadly I doubt...

EDIT: just rewatched the stream on YT and seriously, I cant take them for granted anymore. You can CLEARLY see at Sebs reaction that he obviously hears for the first time about LOD issues with AI traffic, he starts stumbling around and then gives above explanation. What the heck, how is it possible that he has obviously no clue about what the question is? Cant believe this, seriously... I am pretty sure that Kai has already informed them that the AIG models have (I think) five different LOD levels, and they conform to the SDK methods. Quite how they can still be unaware of the true cause of the problem is one of those great mysteries of the world that will be puzzling our descendants centuries from now.

I am really pretty sure they simply do not get the point. Maybe they think we are complaining about the sometimes appearing LOD issues with AI planes, where e.g. the AIG planes then show as simple rectangular like models instead of the full LOD? Who knows, maybe Chewwy should have emphasized the culling issue instead of talking about LODs only? I do not know, it is just another example of how difficult it can be if the contact is only indirect via Ticketsystem and forum manager. Lost in translation is the other aspect. As I am capable of speaking french, I would love to sit once on a table with Seb and Martial for 30min, I could explain them a lot more directly. Such a exchange with the community in a direct manner might resolve some discrepancies pretty quick...

Great, even more downgrades to look forward to with the LOD? Cant we just get settings that let us choose how little or much of graphical power we want? this makes me so sad....

I do notice that the landing gear of some models, especially the 787, disappear a lot earlier than say, the 777.
