OPUSFSX : Stay away?

Featured Replies

I haven't posted much, over the years of following several threads on these forums. I have been following the few threads on AVSIM related to this OpusFSX product and have noticed a few things that I find to be a bit peculiar. First, there seem to be VERY few posts of anyone saying anything other than something along the lines of "The product is revolutionary and they have great support" to paraphrase. Almost every post seems to say something similar to this. It's a bit fishy to me, really. I also balk at the phraseology they use on their website, often describing the experience of using their product as 'perfect'. This seems seriously misleading, which gives me a bit of an impression that almost everything i hear from this company and about this company is purely propaganda. Couple that with a less than professional looking website and hardly adequate 10 minute demo, and I just don't know how to feel about any of this.

There have been other skeptics offering advice and suggestion who have been received in a less than professional manner. Someone suggested they split some of the features like the wx engine and the camera system and OPUS basically laughed at them and went on to describe how their price couldn't possibly be lower priced (with no explanation) and joked that they could simply charge $40 for each feature instead. I don't see this as being superior support at all.

So what is someone like myself (a potentially interested shopper) supposed to make of this? I can understand aceridgey's frustration, because when he posed an issue (regardless of the tone involded), they simply brushed his issue off and went on to talk about how alledgedly thousands have had nothing but positive things to say, then followed by how their product is the best. It's hard to swallow. It doesn't make sense. The propaganda is what really bothers me, and maybe it has something to do with the current election season here in the US, where I'm absolutely fed up with talk and hype. Aceridgey came to them with a real problem, and a real concern, and all he got back was grief and hype. That, to me, is more telling than any rhetoric about tonality and intent in one's posts. We need to be smart consumers and take these things in to account. I'm not siding with anyone here. I'm just saying it smells fishy to me.

For the sake of fairness and clarity, please do not lock the thread. This needs to be addressed in the public forum.

Well, at least I can be honest and say that so far this product has given me much more realistic feeling weather especially during low visibility and overcast conditions, even got my first out of memory error ever during some heavy snows in Zurich, but that's probably because I left my FSX running for over a hour while on the ground with Zurich with all that resource eating weather, GSX and QW 757 and some addon scenery.

Still by no means this product is perfect, but at least in certain weather conditions it seems to do better than Active Sky and REX.

And I can understand your viewpoint too, aceridgey, I think the developer should have just tried to help you instead of trying to point out how most of the people are happy with this product.

"First, there seem to be VERY few posts of anyone saying anything other than something along the lines of "The product is revolutionary and they have great support" to paraphrase."

That's what happens when you have a revolutionary product with great support lol

Couple that with a less than professional looking website and hardly adequate 10 minute demo, and I just don't know how to feel about any of this.

I couldn't care less about flashy websites. All I'm interested in is the end product. Maybe its just me but a website doesnt have to be professional nor a user interface flashy for the product behind it to be good. If anything I would say some of the websites for FS products are over flashy along with a product user interface 'too in your face' colour scheme and layout.

A basic written overview and a few photos are all I need. But thats just my opinion and I know you have yours.

If the 10 minute demo is not long enough you could always try the flight1 30 day return to get a refund if not to your liking. I will say that when I asked a similar question about another product that wasn't, and still isn't, wrapped in the flight1 package I was informed I would not get a refund if I didn't like it. No returns/refunds. Flight1 are good because you have nothing to lose.

I've seen some things that look appealing, especially the fog simulation. That would be really neat if you could actually fly a realistic looking 0/0 approach on auto-land. But it's the winds aloft that gets me. AS2012 has everything I need to slam in to my NGX, and I don't want to part with that just yet.

Well said. It appears to me there were mistakes in communication on both sides. The main point to consider is how a customer with a valid issue was treated. That is what future potential customers will see.

I would like to see both parties start over. Aceridgey has an issue with OpusFSX; Opus team, how can this customer's issue be resolved?

"Sandy"

Lee,

All I said was I had an issue with the uninstall and I wasn't impressed with the product.

It does not warrent AN ALL CAPS RAGE,

it does not warrant saying that other weather engines are inferior,

It does not warrant an arrogant response saying that I am the first user to be unimpressed.

Don't you agree?

Are you telling me that you couldn't contact Opus for support in a civil way to have your problem solved? Or, you never tried that.

Now you are, over here, airing your dirty laundry, in another thread?

It looks to me like you are just trying to flame the Opus developers. Now you are even doing it outside of their forum, where they can't defend themselves as well, or so you think.

I own all of the other weather engines that you talk about, but I'm not happy with them and haven't been for a long time. Opus is the first weather engine that puts realistic weather in FSX and updates it without excessive flashing or clearing and reloading. On top of that, Opus doesn't take forever to download and use its data, like REX and Active Sky 2012.

On top of that Opus has many other features using cameras and TrackIR. Also it has great support and is constantly being upgraded by the developer.

I'm sure he would have welcomed your opinion, had you contacted him with your support need in a civil manner.

Oh for heaven's sake. The guy posted on a public forum about his experience, there's nothing wrong with that. And once again, more and more propaganda.

Chris Virgilio

Alex, I think you simply went a bit too far on this one. Is just my opinion, that is all.

I bought it today, tested it a bit, saw that is really is what they are saying it is, and that's it.

I also found stuff I don't like, I aired my opinion on that, and that's also it.

I would suggest you do the same, if you have a problem, ask.

Btw. I also don't see anything wrong in their answers, rather your posts.

I prefer the word enhancement over perfect. Lets face it this is what FSX addon's are, enhancements that improve the users experience.

I'm Dyslexic, what's an error to you is not to me

It's nothing to do with "propaganda". It's just common decency and courtesy to ask the developer for support before flaming his product on a forum with titles like "UNINSTALLED!" and "Stay Away?".

If your argument is that he can say anything that he wants to on a public forum, then I have every right to state my opinion also, which I did. So there is no need to bring "heaven" into it.

Well, all I can contribute is that the developers have been extraordinairly responsive to anything I have said concerning a possibe problem or desired addition/modification. More reponsive than anyother commerical vendor that I have had the pleasure of dealing with concerning flight sim software. The previous statement isn't a knock on the other vendors, it is intended to highlite the extraordinairy responsiveness of the OPUSFSX staff.

The product has contributed significantly to my enjoyment of the hobby and I beleive is well worth the price. I believe folks, in general, get a little too sensitive about forum communications. We must remember forum communications involve many cultures and countries. What one may find insulting or off-putting may not be seen as such in another country or culture. I don't believe any of the OPUSFSX staff are or intend to be insulting or rude. First, it would be bad for business, second, I just haven't seen such conduct from them in my many interactions with them.

Folks, it is a hobby, ease up a little.

Danny

I'm not sure why this post is in Hangar Chat, as it pertains to a specific product/sim that both have representation for in this forum? That said, from the posts I have read on OPUS, while the great majority are positive there are a few that have problems with it. (No different then any other product) For a developer to post he is the very first one seems rather dismissive not only to him,but to the others that have reported issues. A better response would be to try and solve his issue!!

Thanks

Tom
