Regretful purchases for FSX

Featured Replies

Although I'm an FS9 guy who has yet to buy that screeming i7 to run my purchased copy of FSX I can recall some purchases I could have done without:

1. Ariane 737 (we all can agree this is a bad one), I wanted a BBJ with the interior modeled. The registration process was a no go when I got a new machine.

2. Simflyers/Imagionsim's KEWR - truly the worst performing scenery I have in FS. They refuse to release an updated version.

3. Perfect Flight's 717 - Seeing as we have no payware 717's ever modeled in any version of FS I was desperate. Never buy anything out of desperation.

For the most part I'm happy with my purchases over the years it's just these three stand out the most...

  • I regret buying FSX lol

  • I've yet to make a purchase I truly regretted, but that's from being very careful. There are a few airplanes I don't fly much but I can't say that's all their fault. Most everything I've bought doe

This is a great thread, and I am relieved as to how sane and civil it remains. Good job (almost) all!

Kind regards,

Hello;

I've had a few purchases which I was not impressed with;

Wilco T7

Ariane B738

Mark

OK, did one last night. Bought A2A Accufeel. Worked as advertised in terms of ability to tailor the sound of each aircraft, but just didn't like having it there. The interface always kept flashing in the background when I swithched between things in the FSX menu, and somehow I had trouble turning the thing off.

And looking through my files I found the following that I installed once, and decided to never install again:

* SceneryTech Landclass. Not very good sadly and I consider it a marginal upgrade over the default landclass.

* X-Plane 10 ;)

Simmerhead - Making the virtual skies unsafe since 1987!

Nice topic!

Purchases I regret:

Wilco Evolution series (both Airbus and 737), I get horrible night lightning with Airbus and I find the VC of the 737 just bad.

FScene - that just does not look right for my taste, got it on sale though...

Ultimate Traffic 2 - this traffic injection system doesn't work right for me. A lot of Missing Airlines or liveries (in not so common destinations i have almost only generic liveries...), after a while traffic just disappears on long haul flights, needs an awful lot of tweaking before i got what i wanted and then had a problem backing up my changes - not at all was i was hoping for.

However - Stuff i just love:

Active Sky and Radar Contact! No flight without them!

FSCommander

Shade and Accufeel (fantastic little pieces of software!)

ORBX and PMDG just leaves my mouth wide open again and again....

MilViz - their 310 and the Baron are close to perfect, same for everything from Realair.

LatinVFR - really nice and interesting sceneries! They made me want to fly to not so usual destinations!

I bought AccuFeel, tried it once, and removed it from the loading xml files. Good effect, but didn't seem very special in the aircraft I was flying at the time. Recently reinstalled it for a different aircraft and have been using it ever since.

Even if I never used it again, it's hard to regret a purchase that's only $15.

Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of Earth
And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings;

On my part, regretful purchases, I would have to say REX for their support people dont seem to know what they talk about and takes forever just to get a proper answer strongly thinking of going to Active Sky 2012, Wilco totally rubbish and such poor design interior VC (A380), CLS the airbus collection, and of course CS757, for some reason all these builders have Beta testers and yet they never post any bad sides of the product they are trying, they never get no errors like what everyone is getting at the moment with this new REX Essential +Overdrive and that we cannot get any proper responses to them errors except that they just throw the ball from one guy to the other and telling you, we need more info, I am really annoyed with that program.

I got some but my latest would have to have been carenado g1000 t 182.

In the spirit of throwing some names out:

CS 727. Got it during one of their sales, so worth the risk, but the various bugs drive me nuts. I use FSX SP2 and not Acceleration, and apparently that makes a big difference.

Feel There/Wilcom Citation. I bought this when I got back into simming, and found out later that there were better/more complete versions of the Citation.

Those are the only two I really "regret" in so far as I don't think they were good purchases in retrospect. I have others I have purchased that I don't use that much, like FS2Crew MD11 (which is great for what it is, and I love his stuff, but without the voice, it's meh), or the FlyTampa St. Maarten (well done, but I end up flying to St. Maarten just to fly to the airport when it isn't a normal location for me.

I do think this thread is interesting because some people have posted things that I love and have no problems with (like UT2) saying that they cause frequent CTDs. Always interesting to see how people's experiences vary.

Orbx Lancair - I'm not saying it's bad, because I couldn't really fault anything - except that it's not the most performance friendly. It's very twitchy to fly, but that could be accurate for all I know. We just never clicked, Lancair and I. It's even put me off buying the RealAir Lancair - and I have everything RealAir bar their Spitfire.

Just Flight DC-3 and Mosquito and Hawker 800XP. Just for their really bad graphics performance. Although I still like the Mostquito. Again more of a chemistry shortfall than than a major problem with the product.

FSBuild - dreadful interface, hated using it. Didn't bother with it when I reinstalled FSX a few months ago.

Wilco CRJ - better than the default - just. Certainly not by enough to make the cost worth it. Another add-on I just haven't bothered to reinstall.

MilViz Baron - there, I've said it. Actually, I love the aircraft, how it looks and how it flies, but the performance is just too poor on my system, even using lo-res textures. I wouldn't dream of getting rid of it though. One day I'll have a better rig and that Baron will sing. It's just a pity I didn't delay the purchase.

DreamFleet Baron and Aeroworx King Air: I bought them at about the same time as each other, realising they were for FS9 but thinking how hard could it be to port them over to FSX? Well I found out. And never got to fly either one. Dammit. Still, I went into it with my eyes open, so I can't complain.

To be honest, I don't have many FSX purchasing regrets, given all the stuff I've bought, but I do tend to do a thorough recon first. I read the reviews but take them with a large pinch of salt. I'm more interested in what's being said in the user forums, the flightsim forums and VA and VFC forums - those are the places where you really find out what a product is like. As someone else has said, a customer-only forum is a red flag. I'm very rarely among the first to purchase anything, and am quite happy to let others take the risks, suffer the bugs and generally feel the pain until its safe for me to pull the purchasing trigger. I don't know why people are often in such a rush to purchase stuff on day one, but I'm happy they do it. Keep up the good work, lads. :smile:

EWE21.

I'd almost agree with you about REX Ess + until very recently. They were naughty about not bring the SP1 sooner and without any other bells and whistles so we could all get on with the baro. and other fixes. However, unless this program is run outside of Program (x86) then it just wont perform correctly and that's what they keep hammering home.

I've also found that unless your IE9 is up to date then that can cause an issue which you'd never have dream of finding a solution too.

I would agree that if you bark at them out of frustration they will bark back! Not good PR.

Richard.

I was thinking that, but it is so different it is unreal. If you like their other stuff then you will love the Legacy.....

Let's go,

First, great topic, thank you for that.

Regrets :

T7 Wilco. It's my fault, I bought it in a store without noticing that it was a lite version.

Apart from the fact that I do not like light versions, this product is buggy and there is no more support for it. No more money from me.

A380 : No comment.

CS B727. the only product purchased from Captain Sim (seems it's the "winner" here or may be Wilco?).

Unfortunately it was never completed and their support is just terrific (some robotic, irrelevant answers). No more money from me.

Absolutly no regrets :

The products that I use, like and functioning as expected (the most important in final imo)

PMDG 747, MD11, JS41, NGX 6/7/8/900 serious finished products and excellent support.

Maddog

Aerosoft Marcel Felde Katana 4X

ORBX

GSX

Aerosoft A300

Some Aerosoft sceneries and airports.

All FS2Crew program.

I think H has hit a very significant nail squarely on the head here? I'm sure that he and I are not alone in having bought Sim add-ons only to realise they would be good next time we upgrade our system. You just have to put some aside to enjoy later?

BTW as we're adding some positives now I just bought the new LHC Tri Pacer and haven't had time to do much with it yet but I think It's going to be up there with the SibWings Bird Dog for me.

PS at the moment I'm mostly really interested in "Low n Slow" but I've kept a keen interest in what you tubeliner jocks like and even though I'm not looking for them now I'm sad to see so many aircraft that would be my first choice if I go that way being amongst those you're least happy with.
