April 3, 201313 yr Just curious as to how many members have pilots licenses. I'll start off by saying I'm a sim pilot

April 3, 201313 yr Commercial Member Went through all the GA training, only to find that I had Retinitis Pigmentosa, causing tunnel vision, and disqualifying me before even going solo. :-( Hence simulation, on which I've probably by now spent more than I ever would as a GA pilot! April 3, 201313 yr Yes PPL ASEL but I'm not current mainly because of the cost. | My Liveries | FAA ZMP | PPL ASEL | | Windows 11 | MSI Z690 Tomahawk | 12700K 4.7GHz | MSI RTX 4080 | 64GB 6000 MHz DDR5 | 500GB Samsung 860 Evo SSD | 2x 2TB Samsung 970 Evo M.2 | EVGA 850W Gold | Corsair 5000X | HP G2 (VR) / LG 27" 1440p |
April 3, 201313 yr PP SEL - not current due to "circumstances" , but still hope to correct that and get back to it one of these days. In the meantime, simming. Scott

April 3, 201313 yr Actually this theme is quite interesting from many different angles. One point is to think about the diminishing numbers of real world pilots (non-professional). Expenses are one thing for sure, but really, where are those people who would and could have a GPL, UPL or PPL? Sky is the same as it was a hundred years ago and flying should as interesting as ever. Are they simming? Majority of my flying friends are opposed to the idea of devoting time an resources to FS in any form. I was also until they started to look appealing from the FS9 onwards. Personally I have found simming to be very rewarding and it has widened considerably my horizon in aviation. But it seems that sim and IRL pilots seldom fly in both worlds, so it must be a substitute in both ways. Another interesting modern day phenomenon is aviation photographers who are quite numerous nowadays. I have discussed with them and many of them are very interested in aviation, but usually they are satisfied with just watching and photographing the planes. I'm afraid that we are losing potential irl pilots to these aforementioned hobbies and that is a pity since the aviation clubs are alive only when they have plenty of flying members. Only then the clubs can buy new planes or repair the old. Don't let the beautiful sunsets in Fsx fool you, real sky has the ultimate textures. Says GPL/MGPL/UPL flyer.
April 3, 201313 yr The results of this type of poll are meaningless. Nope, they're highly scientific and precise... <cough> Of course there's no deep meaning. It's just for fun and a bit of discussion. Scott

April 3, 201313 yr Are they simming? I've wondered this myself...how much simming has cut into RW flying. When I was an active pilot I used to sim for an hour if I hadn't flown for a while before I went up...work on procedures...get my mindset right. Truth is, when your flying there is rarely a reason to other than flying. When you're simming, well, there's training, you get to pick your airplane, location, circumstances. With the cost of flying an hour in a small single engine, you could buy three nice airport sceneries easily. Also, the RW airplane you want might be gone (despite the fact that you scheduled it...guh), weather might be marginal, and other things. The other day I was flying with Active Sky latest SP and thought to myself "Woh...this is getting real." Yeah, I wish I could afford to fly but I'd also wish I could build out a cockpit for a Duke, Cessna Mustang, TBM or something like that...something that I could put the same money into that I would have spent flying but get to enjoy at little cost. It'd be nice to fly somewhere on those rare occassions that I need to go someplace but when I don't, simming, for me, is more practical and a sufficient challenge.
