I think the turbulence seems a bit excessive at times. I could be mistaken, but IRL when there's a sigmet that indicates turbulence, it doesn't mean that literally every square mile of the reported area will in fact have turbulence. It's likely based on wx forecasts and pireps, and you're simply more likely to encounter turbulence in that area. Doesn't mean you will experience it 100% of the time, as ASN seems to treat it. I could be wrong.

Other than that I'm enjoying ASN trial and will probably buy the upgrade soon.

Edit: and I just noticed some previous posts about the turbulence. I'll take that into account.

  • $50/$30 and no textures..  Gotta pass on that..  Did the same for Opus.. Weather depiction alone isn't worth that much to me.. AS2012 will stay

  • Yesterday I tried to make a comparison between ASN and Opus. I have been using Opus with full satisfaction for the last year and I was curious to compare it with ASN, after all the hypes and comments

Just flew through a thunder storm in the Middle East with a 180mph crosswind in the NGX. Wow, wont be doing that again in a hurry

Flew from KBHM to KJAN this AM w ASNext, RC4, and existing AS2012 textures. I got a solid lockup about 30 minutes into the flight, had to use task manager to end FSX. I think this had to do with an "ambient Change", so I have added as_btsrp.dll and as_connect.dll to my Kaspersky exclude list (already have Asnext as a trusted application). The aircraft was RA Duke V2. I already had cloud layers down to 3, the enhanced overcast unchecked, everything else default. I noticed before the lockup that frame rates had dropped to about 15 over an undercast sky.

Will try again with the new settings plus reduced cloud sight distance (60/90) to see if this helps.

Ok, tried it this AM with the above changes, same aircraft, same altitude, similar weather. No freezes, fps stayed at a steady 30 (locked rate), so the changes seemed to work. I suspect the main culprit was my Kaspersky AV and by listing as_btsrp.dll and as_connect.dll as exclusions all is well.

I'm noticing a increase of VAS usage (maybe?)... I'm flying from KBOS to KLAS and although i'm not middle way yet, my VAS is at 3.5GB and increasing. I've flying over a constant overcast since I left Boston and lets see what how it turns out...

Does anyone noticed some more VAS being consumed when flying above OC for hundreds of miles? could it be due to the type of clouds?

I've noticed a lower value of VAS compared to OPUS.  But for now I'm sticking with OPUS due to some other factors.

I'm noticing the opposite, but I'm comparing against ASE not OPUS. In ASE in the same situation with the NGX I get 1.35GB free, with ASN I'm getting 1.4GB VAS free. Measured with FSUIPC.Note I'm running Vista 32bit OS so I'm limited to 3GB VAS all together.

I had to switch to FSGRW eventually or I'd get an OOM before the end of the flight. I still was flying above overcast, but with a different type of clouds. The VAS eventually started to come down a little and now is on 3.2GB...

My completely froze on my second flight, had to hold down the power button to get the pc off, not had that problem for years, then done it again on a later flight. This was at CZST in overcast conditions in the Realair Lancair.

Also getting some wild weather reports, half of Switzerland is showing as +8 deg just now, and the other half the true temp of about -2 deg C?  It´s not been 8 deg C since November.

Need to try with lower turbulence too as the default value makes light props often unflyable.  Turbulence seems very jerky, like a severe vibration.  If I can´t iron this out before the end of the trial then I will stick to FSGRW.

Following up my previous post on my experience with ASN compared with Opus, after a few more days of testing I would like to add the following observations:

1) ASN tends to be heavy on FPS during cloud redraws. It is probably due to the multiple layers that ASN is using simultaneously during redraws to prevent sharp cloud transitions. I am using FEX2 DXT5 clouds @ 1024 resolution, so in theory nothing that my I72600K @4.8Ghz + GTX680 shouldn’t be able to cope with. Nevertheless I have seen that during cloud redraws, i.e. immediately after weather update download, I have significant FPS drops that stay on fluctuating for about 2-3 minutes and then everything comes back normal.

2) I confirm that, apart from the above, cloud transition is definitely amazing….no sharp changes, no wind shift…..excellent indeed, I needn’t to say more…!

3) “Cloudscapes” depiction by ASN is definitely the best I have ever seen in many years of flight simulation.

4) Visibility graduation from surface to high altitude in my opinion needs some tweaking. I think a better depiction of the haze layer seen from the above should be worth being considered for future releases. IMHO the terrain tends to remain too “clear” even at high altitudes.

5) Turbulence needs some tweaking: currently, turbulence is always present from take off to landing, and there is very little difference between inside and outside clouds. In cruise conditions there is a constant level of turbulence during every flight which is not realistic. It is not related to Opus DHM settings (I have used Opus for Camera views and DHM only).

6) Turbulence effects are NOT reflected on Instrumentation. Despite what reported by others in this thread, I cannot see roll, pitch, and bank indicators moving during turbulence.

I believe ASN has still a great growth potential but still needs some tweaking. I am certain that Damian and his team will make it..

Hi all,

many thanks for your feedback. Couple of comments here:

- First high TAT readings: There are some issues with the latest fsuipc preventing correct ambient control from ASN. Make sure you get the latest one (I believe PD has it out now 4.926- See http://www.hifitechinc.com/forums/showthread.php?2058-Compatibility-issue-FSUIPC-4-924-4-925-and-ASN). If you have a network configuration, you'll have to either wait for our upcoming hot fix release, or revert to an older fsuipc.

- "Constant" turbulence. Since this also may be affected by fsuipc conflicts, I'd suggest you cross check what you "feel" as turbulence, with our ambient monitor (tools->Debug window). If you get constant turbulence and it says there "Turb:None", then it's either camera movement, or a conflict preventing ASN from accurately controlling turbulence. Please report back.

- Switzerland temps: An issue resulting in incorrect surface only temperature interpolation has been identified and will be fixed in the upcoming hot fix release. Interestingly, Switzerland has significant temperature inversions this time of year.

- One thing about performance (during smooth cloud transitions): In addition to any tips given so far (restrict CDD, cloud layers etc), there is sth else: We tend to overestimate our graphics card capabilities in some cases(that includes myself here) and "overdo" it with anti-aliasing. Smooth cloud transitions is all about transparency rendering and settings as for example SGSS (Sparse grid supersampling) in Nvidia Inspector, if set too high will bring performance down, that's for sure. Just to keep this in mind. It's always a matter of balance and each machine will behave differently, I know that. But consider ASN depicting a t-storm and during a weather update, we want to make it smoothly re-render all these clouds to a different position (this way simulating for example a "closing alley" as ASN does). This will be hard for the system.

Kostas,

thanks for your feedback...

Ref performance during cloud redraws, I actually have 2XSGSS on Nvidia Inspector settings....will try to roll it back to a less heavy setting to see if it makes the difference.

Ref. FSUIPC compatibility, do you confirm that 4.926 is still creating issues on a networked configuration ?

Yes, either go back to an earlier, or wait for our hot fix

What setting would be best to use if you roll back from 2XSGSS in Nvidia inspector, thanks
