January 3, 201511 yr I look at the emergence of the Steam version as being a very good thing. I whole-hardheartedly agree with you. And I'm even happier that DoveTail has obviously made improvements with the product (I say that not only from other experiences, but my own also), and that most of my existing add-ons have worked flawlessly. Any step which may bring more business to the vendors is a good thing for all flight simmers. There have been far too many vendors that have shut down these past couple of years. Stevan Makarevich
January 3, 201511 yr Thanks for taking the time for the review. I'm sticking with FSX until a 64 bit alternative is available. The only reason to jump to SE is if you want to solve OOM issues without purchasing the dx10 fixer. I have it, and haven't had an OOM since switching.
January 3, 201511 yr Interesting... But it's not enough for someone like me who has FSX already tweaked, painted, chromed, lowered, and chopped with a blown 454 big block under the hood. Why anyone would have FSX [vender/version] not in DX10 is a mystery to me.
January 4, 201511 yr I haven't commented on this thread so far and I had no intention either, but do I feel the need to say that we shouldn't call the people who have a criticial note "whiners", "whingers" or ones that "slag him off". Just because someone puts a lot of effort into something, which all us of appreciate, shouldn't stop others from sharing their opinions. Their opinions are just as imporant as this test. While everyone is free to post what they they chose on the forum (within its rules), it's a fallacy that all opinions "are just as important" - they are self-evidently not. Gerry Howard
January 4, 201511 yr Why anyone would have FSX [vender/version] not in DX10 is a mystery to me. I don't, and have no plans to. Here are my valid reasons: I can use any of my FS9 planes without them showing up black or missing. I can use any FS9 programmed AI plane models without them being invisible. I don't get shimmering taxiways and my progressive taxi lines all show up. I don't gain anything on performance. I don't gain anything in visuals. In fact, certain textures perform worse, and I am not interested in shadows in my 3D cockpit. I never have OOMs, so nothing lost or gained there. I don't have to buy a utility fix or tweak files from the library here.
January 4, 201511 yr Let us all rejoice and be grateful for the diversity of FSX experiences which are now available. There is no wrong choice: there are only the ones that suits our needs. BTW, I'm a DX10 convert addicted to its VC shadows and bloom, and the wind-aware whitecaps. If it weren't for its cloud shadows, P3D (which I do not own) would hold 0% of my interest; I refuse to drink its coolaid since that feature breaks terrain shadows, and $200 is way too much for a beta-in-work. January 5, 201511 yr Why anyone would have FSX [vender/version] not in DX10 is a mystery to me. It's because of DX11, and is found in Prepar3D v2 I'll just let good ol' FSX remain good 'ol FSX. Nice thing about Steam though is that one can fly the Red Bull air races in multiplayer again. Simmerhead - Making the virtual skies unsafe since 1987!

I had problems with the "free" MODs available from the AVSIM library, but those problems vanished when I used Steve's Fixer with FSX Golden Edition. I am yet to decide if I'm going to use the Fixer with FSX SE because I have it minimal ( only use it as a visuals generator for PSX... ) but reading across the posts in this thread, and from my experience with it's use in the Legacy FSX, I think it could be useful for people using complex aircraft, where the limitations of 32 bit become more apparent ? Also, would be interested to know if you use any Nvidia Inspector or Control Panel settings with FSX, and if you do, I would be grateful to get a screen of your Nvidia panel so that I can try it myself Thx Jim Flying gliders since 1980 Flightsimming since 1992 AMD Ryzen 5600x, 32GB RAM, GPU Nvidia RTX 3060 Ti 8 GB, 1 TB and 500 GB nvme2 SSD drives, HP 27" 60Hz LED monitor @ 1920x1080, T16000, Hotas from old X52 Pro, Saitek Combat Rudder Pro (2010 model)

If you never experienced an OOM then I'm brave enough to claim that you never sat a foot (metaphorically speaking) in a complex aircraft add ons such as the PMDG, flying between two highly detailed add on airports above photoscenery or other heavy scenery add ons. Oh, and don't forget to throw in some real-time weather there. I think many will familiarize themselves with this scenario as one just crossing the VAS limit, unfortunately. Its great for you that you'd never experienced and OOM, fair enough, but trust me - there's a bunch of simmers out there who does. People tend to seek other solutions when things are hitting the wall and I think we should respect that  Nevertheless, I agree with you on many points. There's no reason to try to force others into believing benchmark results. After all, their just results, and in this case - its not overwhelming convincing to be honest after all the "no OOMs hype" that went on here. Brynjar Mauseth

January 5, 201511 yr Flightsim Store - very good user support( my experience ) I use just the NV control panel. Could you give me your settings Jim ? January 5, 201511 yr No OOM in your benchmark with FSX:SE. That's very encouraging as that will rid me of my largest problem with MS FSX! Once my purchased products are updated to the new API, I'll use the Steam Edition exclusively. Thanks for doing this! Daniel Moser
