P3D 3.0 Speculation & General Nonsense

I just read somewhere that LM is skipping the 64 bit version and is working on a 128 bit version....

The reason is that the way several addon developers are going with their HD textures ( 16384 textures ) and lots of features/animations ( all kind of animals crowling in the grass / flowers according to the time of year ) the 64 bit version would have VAS problems within a year after release....

I implore anyone wanting to learn more about memory allocation, to go read anywhere else but here.  Do your own googling and research on your own.  The amount of misinformation in this thread alone is astounding and what is scary many of the incorrect statements are made with more certainty than those who are actually correct.  Scary...

Please do your own research, or you can even find some basic programming tutorials that explain/demonstrate memory usage and allocation.

My thoughts are...

Nice story but I think you've got it all wrong when it comes to how important we, the home simmers, are to LM... and that renders the whole story utterly useless. LM isn't a gaming company like you seem to portray it. I am 100% certain v3 won't be 64 bit and DX12. You can quote me on that after the release.

Bill, can you make this a sticky - I think this thread should be compulsory reading ?

I'm confused.

Perhaps I should read it again...

Regards

Bill

I'm saying that you know they love all the cash. All the 'acedemic' licenses that are being purchased. All the licensing fees from scenery and aircraft companies. If they want to keep that cash, they will care about these things. Money makes the world go round.

The main reason though why I think LM should (and probably will) upgrade to 64 bit/DX12 is all their 'acedemic' customers. LM isn't stupid, and like any other company, they are driven by money. They know that 95% of their acedemic licenses are being used differently.

Nice story but I think you are mistaken when it comes to whom are important to LM. It's not us home simmers. We are just allowed to enjoy what LM is doing but we aren't the target group of LM and so I think everything you say doesn't really apply. v3 won't be 64 bit and it won't support DX12. And the Rift may be fun for us home simmers but it's totally irrelevant to LM's target market. We are not as important as you think.

I believe Rob has released another secret clue of V3 release date in his video but I can not seem to craic this one.

So how about doing some Preparation? I've somehow made a handy rack of panels, that I can just swing onto my desk when I get time for a flight:

That's really cool Steve,  so handy.  There's a little handle to carry it around and all.  Is it a modified drawer?

Cute huh! It's a length of pine sawn up and sprayed, added a bunch of bits, rubber feet, handle, from the local hardware store.

Oooh very good, it looks the part.

This forum is getting to be a real freaking joke. Certain folks posting stupid crap just to bump up their post count. Really not sure why I even donated anymore.

Agreed. I am going to unsubscribe now. Perhaps some more reputible source will tell me when there are news on P3D3.

Kind regards, Michael

Let's go really off track...

Steve... can those Saitek panels be configured to send custom event IDs?

Not with the supplied software. But they are fairly regular HID USB devices, so I expect they can be read by a program that runs a simconnect client to do the events.

You guys are way too serious. Might I suggest you follow Adam's advice - see my earlier post: http://www.avsim.com/topic/473458-p3d-30-speculation-general-nonsense/?p=3291797

While this thread is full of nonsense, at least it is restricting all the inconsequential levity to one place in the forum. Think what might happen if it was locked! I interpret the moderators' apparent reluctance to close it down as simply a case of damage limitation. There is always idle and usually ill-informed speculation prior to the release of any version.

As to demeaning our importance in the eyes of Lockheed Martin, I think those who believe this is the case may have got it wrong. I'm not sure their commercial clients are best placed to delve into every aspect of the workings of the sim - they just need it to work without any needless and time wasting hassle. After release to market we are the true 'second-line Beta testers' and our experiences are constantly under surveillance by the Developers. Yes, most of our problems tend to be of our own making, whether we realise it or not, but from time to time some very useful stuff is reported and fixed in subsequent updates. Occasionally solutions to issues will be discovered/worked out by the user, reported on the forums and sometimes adopted by the Developer.

It is just possible, indeed very likely, that the making of the sim available to a wider market under the Academic licence was a clever and deliberate move and by so doing ensured a constant stream of user feedback between version updates.
