Boxed version will require DVD at every start-up

It’s much more effort to go and pour a bourbon then it is to insert a DVD into the drive. 🤷‍♂️

And who doesn’t have  DVD drive? 🤔

Most people with new computers don't have them. Even cars don't have them (CD or DVD disk drives)  these days.

I don't - I bought a $50 portable DVD drive for the odd older software I had on DVD. I hardly use it these days.

I don't have one either, like David i have a portable DVD drive for older software. I am glad i found out about this as i had ordered the Boxed Version so have just sent a cancellation request through. I have decided to sit and wait as i am not sure how amazing this new sim is going to be with a 24MB download speed internet connection.

USB DVD drives are super cheap. I have a Blue Ray version.

It will be "amazing enough."  The only time you'll hit your max speeds is when you're downloading the sim the first time 😄 and when you're flying over extremely complex scenery.  If it's a problem too much of the time you might get by by turning down your settings a notch.

In other words, don't worry about it.

Fun fact about DVDs - I bet you can't tell me what DVD actually stands for?

It's actually getting hard to find pre-built computer systems with expansion slots for the front panel any longer.

I wouldn’t be buying one without that option. I’ve got boxes of old pc games on disk. Comes in handy having a disk drive.

Guess you’ll all be sitting back watching my screenshot after screenshots of MSFS 2020 while I play it and twirl 85 disks around my fingers.

Even bare computer cases.  I like to have an available front slot to hold a hot-swap SSD bay.  It's how I make reserve clones and interim backups.  The alternative I guess is an eSata port to allow cabling to an SSD.

Here we go again.
It's not even out and we start with outdated problems related to the 1990s implemented to brand-new software in 2020.
Not a good start at all and already a big inconvenience before even running the software.
Total paranoia of hoping to protect the software while honest people are inconvenienced and nobody can stop pirating software.
At this point (at least for me) just for that reason I will not buy the DVD version and I will not buy a portable DVD unit because they can't figure out how to protect their software in 2020.
What other "news" we will find out before release and after?

I'll get rid of mine when I upgrade my PC for MSFS. Will remove the slots and mount a watercooling unit.

To be honest I was surprised there was even a DVD option at all. It seems pretty pointless to me.. the printed manual is nice to have but considering that the software still relies on an internet connection heavily to download the scenery, and I presume updates will be fairly frequent, it just doesn't make any sense to buy it on disc. Especially given that it'll be out of date on day 1.

Also, while I'm not normally one to go overboard with sustainability stuff, given that just 10 copies of MSFS equates to 100 DVDs, think of all the plastic (most of which will be single use) and paper that will get used to produce them..

But we have been over this many times, it is done for the benefit of those who either have no internet at all or have a very slow one. Yes, there are such people even in otherwise highly developed countries, some of them were even vocal on this forum.

On release we can party like it's 1999 🎉🎈

Do XBOX games that you buy at the store even require this?? Interesting that the people at Microsoft are 10 years (at least) in the past. Hopefully Asobo can talk some sense into them. A single key linked to your account should be enough I would think. But jeez some of the people on that forum are freaking out and being kinda rude. It does suck knowing some people have slow or no internet but if that is the case you won't enjoy this sim much at all.

The only reason I want a physical copy is to add the box to my FS collection. I would maybe use the key in the future if I wanted to do some LAN..
