DX12 - 18th November!

Featured Replies

DX12 will probably not increase FPS, but the sim might run smoother.

Also it makes it possible to add DLSS, which will increase FPS for the same level of AA.

For me DLSS in other games has increased FPS substantially, so I really hope that Asobo will look into this once DX12 has been fully implementet and bugfixed in MSFS.

They mentioned DX12 will be optional, at least for some time. I think that was in the latest Q&A.

Kind regards, Michael

This is exactly the only reason I want to try DX12. When xplane 11 went to vulkan, that is still the smoothest sim I have ever used.

I am going to leave it alone until the dust settles. It may be that once you get it, you are stuck with it, unable to roll back.

Although we all keep repeating (including Asobo) about not expecting significant performance increases with DX12, as you say, a lot of other titles have gained from DX12 and DLSS.

Train Sim World 2 has seen performance increases of around 40% just by setting the '-DX12' flag on startup.  Different software of course, but there are some similarities.

I understand some of this needs to come through accessing DX12 directly rather than just through the 'DX12 wrapper', but, well... That's what these coders are there for!

I like to trick airline passengers into thinking I have my own swimming pool in my back yard by painting a large blue rectangle on my patio.

Intel 14900K in a Z790 motherboard with water cooling, RTX 4080, 32 GB 6000 CL30 DDR5 RAM, W11 and MSFS on Samsung 980 Pro NVME SSD's.  Core Isolation Off, Game Mode Off.

I'm hoping DX12 will eventually play a big role in improving clouds and weather which is an area I feel needs the most improvement.  And one other giant area: programmable shader-driven seasonal changes in trees, grasses, shrubs.  It's certainly begging for having variables like latitude, elevation, temperature, time of year impact how plants appear so that changes happen organically over weeks.  Sounds very doable, and very cool to get right.

Given the hard limit imposed on VRAM by Direct X 12, it is to be hoped that Asobo have come up with a way to keep the VRAM usage below the capabilities of the graphics card. It is only too easy to overdo the settings in P3D v5 with the resulting crash that does not take place in P3D v4 and Direct X 11.
Diect X 12 is certainly not (yet?) the holy grail that some seem to think that it is, though it does seem to be more forgiving in Windows 11.

So DX12 works better in Windows 11...?

My suggestion is based only on my own experience but today is the first time that I have seen this and have P3D v5 continue to work.

You’ll be able to turn it off and on at will.

IIRC they said during the Q&A that if you crash in DX12 mode it will revert back to DX11

Will we have an option to continue using DX11, or will the use of DX12 be enforced?  My GPU only has 6 GB of Vram, which is just enough for most scenarios on high settings. As the general experience with P3Dv5 has shown, DX12 will likely increase the Vram usage and lead to out of memory errors if it's more than the GPU can handle. Does anyone know?

It will be optional until they work out all the bugs

I hope it's not like the X-Plane DX12 debacle that they eventually got right. (mods I'm not doing a my sim is better than yours thing here.. Purely technical).  X-Plane had a TON of problems when DX12 was introduced and people getting crashes left and right because unlike DX11 that managed the VRAM. DX12 does not and it's up to  the app/game  to manage the VRAM

I don't recall them saying this will improve performance nor having run smoother. From my understanding, it is more of unlocking new features that they can implement next year once they drop off DX11 for good.

AMD Ryzen 7 7800X3D, 64GB DDR5 6000MHZ RAM, RX7900XT, FreeSync 165hz 1440p display

DX12 = More system resource. hope you have enough vram.

Xplane has never used DX12, ever.  It uses vulkan……
