Poor Performance with NVIDIA 4090

Featured Replies

Even if frame generation is off, OP should still be getting better performance than their last card, especially when they said they got low fps with all gfx options set to low. If they can get frame generation working then yeah, that'll boost frames, but the raw performance is still way too low. I would agree with most the others who have said OP is CPU limited. OP is getting nowhere near their value for money if the 4090 is being hamstrung by the CPU, but for some reason OP seems to be reluctant to screenshot their CPU core usage.

Another important thing: dev mode fps counter will not show the increased fps with frame generation on.

the app itself seems agnostic to FrameGenerator generated frames because they are not produced by the app, as Travelrunner had pointed out earlier. that's why NVidia "forgot" to turn Dev mode on during their 4090 launch event. 😀

A similar issue exists in task manager when you display GPU load with DX12: it is unrealistic, way too low = unusable.

60-130 fps. no CPU overclocking.

very nice.

Yeah, I struggled getting frame generation to work when I got the 4090. What's needed is:

  • latest nVidia game ready driver (522.25)
  • HAGS on
  • SU11 beta
  • DX12
  • DLSS then DLAA

Even then, the menu item for frame generation didn't show (it wasn't even grayed out). I resolved it by manually editing usercfg.opt and setting DLSSG to 1.

What's complicating this further is that some menu items in the beta are garbled. Not for all users though, apparently. I've got “MENU.GRAPHICS_EFFECT_DLSS_G” instead of frame generation.

I haven't been able to resolve why the menu items are like this. I even exited the beta and rejoined as @Maxis mentioned. At first the menu was normal, then on the second MSFS load it returned to garbled.

Another important thing: dev mode fps counter will not show the increased fps with frame generation on. For that you need an external app. I use RTTS.

Hi, I'm stuck here. Following the recommendations, I unpromoted myself from the SU11 Beta version, but now that I want to return to it, there is no way to update it. I've already done:

Xbox Inside > Join > reset PC, open MSFS, but it doesn't make any attempt to download any update and I'm stuck on release version 1.27.21.0. If I don't upgrade to SU11 Beta, I won't have the DLSS option.

Any suggestion?

I’ve already gone back to SU10 then SU11 without any issues, so not sure. Currently in the process of a complete reinstall of SU10 after leaving the beta. In a few hours when trying to enter the beta again, I’ll hopefully know more. I’ll get back to you, if I forget just pm me.

what? MSFS uses all available cores - more than FSX (2)  and uses for the first time even the GPU to compute massively parallel tasks like CFD, unlike FSX not only to render an image. and like FSX, yes MSFS still does calculate a flightmodel.

like that old 64bit DirectX12 😊

lot's of old physics still there, haven't updated that old newton's law of motion in the last 300 years. awful.

Did I say it didn't utilize all cores? No...And yes MSFS 2020 still uses FSX code. Check yourself because you wreck your self 😉

like which of that "old code" exactly? Asobo had access to the original "old" code and re-wrote it for MSFS, btw MSFS is 64 bit, "old FSX code" was all "old" 32 bit. did you say it wasn't 64 bit? No you didn't. your wording though insinuates it is old, which in technology terms usually means outdated, inefficient, superseded by newer technology. which clearly it isn't. if you mean sections of old code calculating sine, cosine and pi then yes, they probably still use that same old math here and there in their code. 😀

@elee Have you tried running it in DX11? DX12 seems to have performance issues with a high load on the main thread for some people in SU11Beta, take a look here: https://forums.flightsimulator.com/t/massive-main-thread-limiting-on-dx12-and-still-using-more-vram-than-available/549163

I see you're looking to revert to SU10, which may also be a good idea. Anyway, trying to get as much data as possible using different settings can help isolate the underlying cause for the issue.

Hi guys

I've resolved the 4090 performance issues. I'm going to post all the tests and changes made to the original post on this topic to make life easier for someone else who might have a similar problem. Thank you all, and especially @Cpt_Piett (page 10) who, with his extensive and accurate publication, shed light on what was happening. I read each of the messages and all of them in one way or another helped to give me an idea. Excellent forum. have a good trip to all

Hey that's excellent 👌

And I was able to resolve my issues with the strange menu text:

As it turned out my en-US.locPak file in \Official\OneStore\fs-base had become corrupted. Probably as I used a freeware phraseology mod. I think it was such a niche scenario that no one else has reported it in the beta forums.

Poor Performance with NVIDIA 4090 (RESOLVED)

Hi guys,
Finally, after several days of testing and exhaustive reading of all the suggestions that were given to me in this topic, I can resolve the performance problem on the 4090.

Problem
I went from a modest AMD Radeom 5770 xt GPU to a powerful Nvidia 4090. There were a lot of performance issues. FPS lower than the AMD 5770, constant stutters, DLSS without effects.

Cause

As of the date of this publication, the only way to enjoy the benefits of Nvidia's DLSS technology for the 4090 is with the SU Beta 11 version of MSFS. (By November it is expected to be integrated into the public version). This technology makes the performance of the Nvidia 40xx series literally double the FPS in the MSFS.

First error: For some reason, the option to enable in the MSFS menu “Nvidia DLSS Frame Generation” appears grayed out with no possibility to enable. To fix this, edit the usercfg.opt file and set DLSSG to 1
Thks Cpt_Piett

Second error: In some forums it is recommended for a better performance of the MSFS, to disable HAGS in Windows. ERROR, this must be enabled, it is mandatory for DLSS.
Thks Cpt_Piett

Third error: With the new 4090, the stutters became very noticeable. This is because we must configure the frequency of our monitors with v-Sync and in some cases like mine in which I have a monitor with a non-standard resolution of 3080x1080, with a Refresh Rate of 144Hz, configure a Frame limiter, since the FPS jumps I get are very high (between 70 to 120). I think that for those who have 4k, 8k monitors, this is not a problem.

Resolution
As @Cpt_Piett indicates, we need to make sure we have:

  • latest nVidia game ready driver (522.25) or higher
  • HAGS on (Windows Graphics settings)
  • SU11 beta (or SU11 release when available)
  • DX12
  • DLSS then DLAA

Also, in my case:

  • V-SYNC = ON (MSFS)
  • Frame Rate Limit = 33% Monitor Refresh Rate (MSFS)
  • AMD Freesync (or G-Sync for Nvidia) = ON (on monitor)
  • 144Hz Refresh Rate on the monitor
  • MAX Frame Rate = 45 in Nvidia Control Panel
  • Set up G-Sync for the monitor in Nvidia Control Panel
  • Power Management mode = Maximum in Nvidia Control Panel

Conclusions
CPUs
The issue of the CPU that I currently have was mentioned a lot, which could be a bottleneck for the 4090.
My conclusion: The CPU i9 – 11900k @ 3.50Ghz – Turbo 5.0Ghz – OC at 5.3 Ghz, does not currently represent any bottleneck. All of his Cores remain very free. It is possible that when you change to a 4k or higher monitor, you may need to upgrade.
PSU
The issue of the PSU was also very missionary. I currently have an 850W PSU which can only supply power to 3 of the 4 connectors on the 4090.
My conclusion: If you're not going to OC your GPU, it's not necessary. I already have my new 1200W PSU which I will change this week and post if I notice any changes, however right now with the excellent performance I have with only 3 connectors I don't think it will make a difference.
GPU
The 4090 is plain and simply a beast.
My conclusion: With the HW that I currently have at the CPU and Monitor level, I may not be giving it all the power that this baby still deserves, but for those who can afford it, I think they will be on another level. PCI5 and a good AMD ZEN 4 CPU I think will make them explode with emotions.
General
Now I am enjoying a stable simulator, smooth as hell and with a stable FPS of 70 FPS that guarantees me exceptional maneuverability. Something that I had never achieved in my 25 years of simulation.

Some or many things may vary between different users, but this is what really worked for me and I hope it will be useful for those who may come across something similar.

Thanks for sharing this! I'm sure it will be of help for other 4090 users that may be struggling to get the maximum potential out of this card. And you're certainly not the first to have issues. I struggled at first and found the criteria for getting DLSS3 to work confusing. I've seen users on the official forums struggle too.

Just a note on V-Sync, from Digital Foundry

Quote

...according to nVidia, V-sync is currently not supported [with DLSS3], while G-Sync is supported.

Basically G-Sync allows variable refresh rate without tearing below the monitor’s max refresh rate, while v-sync prevents tearing above it.

Apparently nVidia claims V-Sync is currently not supported to prevent uneven pacing. DF seems to have found this to be the case with MSFS, i.e., v-Sync and DLSS3 leads to stuttery and uneven movement even at a perfect 120fps.

This can tend to complicate things further, so if you're currently happy with your settings I wouldn't worry about it.

There is a too much stuff to keep track of. I need to do some optimizing myself, but I'm waiting for SU 11 to hit production, then I'll optimize to that. I never found the AMD Free Synch that comes with monitors to be worth enabling, but maybe it was just my combination that I had wasn't the best. It didn't make it worse when I tried, but didn't make it better either.

Now I use nothing, just a plain jane 60hz TCL 43" TV, before I had a Gigabyte 32" 144hz monitor. The 43" TV is much more fun, the bigger the better, forget monitors 🙂

I can also play on the 120" projector screen, but I rarely do anymore, as it's hard to get comfortable in a chair for flying without messing up my HT room.
