Steam or Windows

Featured Replies

I am curious to try FS202 and seeing that it is on sale from Steam and also from Newegg (Microsoft/Xbox version) I was wondering is there any difference in these two versions and which one would you recommend?

I am looking to buy the Premium Deluxe edition or maybe the standard edition would be enough. Decisions.

Steam all the way.

Without question… Steam. Use the MS Store version if you like Microsoft burying program files in convoluted folders with special permissions on your file system.

Lol I agree - I have it on Windows Store and when I did a hardware upgrade, reinstall was such a major PITA.  I know of two others who experienced the same nightmare I did.

You would have thunk a Steam user like myself would have purchased it ON steam derp!

I would recommend Steam but avoid using the MSFS marketplace. Too difficult to sort out when things get messed up.

Heard of way too many and more frequent issues with MS Store users. Steam all the way. No need for the goofy Xbox app for windows etc.

Initial install, and two complete reinstalls and one of those after a fresh install of Windows 10--all thru the MS Store with no troubles whatsoever.  A poll early on showed the vast majority had no troubles--I think the main culprit was it was not 100% intuitive for some, and they speak very loudly here on Avsim:

Noel’s poll confirms that twelve percent of respondents had problems with the store version. That sounds like a fairly significant number of users to me.

Get it on Steam. I wish I had.

Here's another unscientific poll...

Personally, I went with Steam as I already had an account there and was happy with their service for other games. After watching this forum since MSFS was released, I'm glad I went with Steam.

It was very early on so this was brand new for all.  I'll bet it's gone well down from there.  Again:  3 complete installs, zero issues including after a fresh Win 10 installs.  How come zero problems?  I learned how to do the simple steps which are nothing for anyone who can fly a flight simulator.  Will absolutely use the Store again--as you can see Steam is not w/o its potential for issues.  Yes, this has to do w/ mixing sources more than Steam itself, but I never liked the idea of putting a 3rd party installer to get between the sim and my hardware when the default one works perfectly fine:

I've had 0 issues using the MS store version.

I actually pre-ordered MSFS on the windows store initially but then refunded it and bought it on steam when the store couldn't even handle the pre-order correctly.  I did the same for Forza Horizon 5.  Steam just works, I've had numerous headaches with the Microsoft Store over several titles that simply don't exist with Steam.

The marketplace does sometimes have issues (not sure if it's only on steam but I do experience them using steam) but to me that's minor compared to the simplicity of steam (and the fact that it just works).

Thanks for the feedback. Another thing, in the MS Store version can you install to a custom folder, for example F:\MSFS ?

Yes.  I use E:\MSFS

And I am another Store user who's never had any problems.
