After SU15:  As soon as the tail comes up the plane starts turning into the wind but no longer is it so fast or abrupt.  I can apply much less rudder to keep near the centerline.  It's now possible on the B18 and the DC3 to keep reasonably straight on the runway with a crosswind.  It's not easy, but it shouldn't be.  Previously, it was all I could do veering back and forth to keep it on the pavement.  The difference is very noticeable for me.

I was only interested in seeing if the poor takeoff behavior was fixed. I did not test any of the other claimed improvements.  Taxi behavior didn't seem to change as far as I could tell.  I've read that some of the changes only apply to those aircraft that have the new parameters applied - that may be true for many of the ground handling improvements, but crosswind takeoff with taildraggers seems to be better without any mods to the files.

Thanks Dutch, very interesting! So it sounds like based on your findings and what others are saying about the PMDG and other birds, all aircraft get *some* benefit even without using the new parameters in the flight_model.cfg?

IT WORKED !!!!!

Adding the <Autopilot/> flag to the panel.xml of the VL-3 activated the AP's FMAs on the G3X.
(Anyone else wanting to make this mod will also have to activate the AP and FD in the systems.cfg).

I'm literally the happiest man alive!

Behavior before SU15:  As soon as the tail comes up the airplane makes an abrupt turn into the wind and starts heading for the grass.  Only immediate strong rudder would keep me on the runway, but then it would veer in the opposite direction.  Although I could find a spot on the rudder to keep it on the runway it was extremely hard to prevent crazy zigzagging until I could lift off.  True for both aircraft.  This is after much practice and adjusting rudder sensitivity.

Hopefully SU15 has improved ground handling, but do be aware that in a real aircraft you cannot counter the effects of a crosswind with rudder alone. You absolutely must use aileron as well. During the takeoff roll you will be cross-controlled with aileron (stick) input into the wind and rudder input away from the wind. The rudder/aileron ratio will change as the aircraft gains speed and especially in a tail dragger there will be a significant change in required control inputs as the tail comes up.

When will SU15 officially be released for everyone?

I heard in March, at the beginning or end of March?

cheers 😉

They haven't given an exact date yet, just early march.

The <autopilot/> flag highlighted below is present in the panel.xml file for the NXCub, but not in the VL-3. 😎

so much fun to be a part of this ongoing improvement process and so much more to it than mere LPV-LNAV-VNAV-study-high-level. I bet we would still be  building and crashing our rc airplanes if it wasn't for testing flight simulator betas.

This Sim Update 15 seems like a huge Sim Update because of the performance improvements and the G3X? Not gonna lie, but for other past Sim Updates, I check the update notes, then I check the forum feedback, and I just shrug and go "nice Sim Update," but it wasn't really that earth shattering. But the reports of how people's performance have improved and how smooth the performance is, and how the G3X will make so many other planes usable once the developer integrates the G3X, this Sim Update 15 seems like a very impactful Sim Update, no?

D'you know what, I was just driven by absolute desperate enthusiasm to get this beautiful new G3X in a fast cruising LSA with an autopilot! 😄   It turned out to be a super simple "fix".  There's a single line 'flag' within the new G3X's code that tells the G3X whether the aircraft has an AP or not (and thus whether to display the mode annunciators at the top of the PFD.

I'd say three big ones, all equally eligible for most impactful improvement 🙂 1) Ground handling, 2) Performance, 3) G3X

The ATC, traffic/AI, weather/snow, garmin 1000/3000/5000 improvements and other fixes I'll also gladly take hehe... also the multi-rotor support for helicopters.

Correct and I should have mentioned ailerons, thanks for pointing it out!

I appears so to be using these simple tests.  I was noticeably more comfortable in crosswind takeoffs post SU15.  More tests needed 🙂
